So whens the launch date for the new Vita?

Wonder if there will be deals on the old model to move stock out....

Yeah from everything I've read the new screen is a downgrade so I won't have any problem keeping my current one. In fact I think I might pick up a spare as a back up once they start to clear stock. I'm sure someone will have a sale on them.

I've been waiting for an LCD model, all the burn in stories were enough to convince me to wait.

Problem with that is the move to LCD is part of their cost reductions to finally pull in some semblance of a profit on these things.

I don't see them using a high end LCD here, and the OLED (even with it's tint, black, and burn in issues) is probably going to be the better display still.

The OLED also will still have the much better contrast ratio and little to no ghosting of fast moving images due to LCD having a slower refresh rate.

LCD offers some benefits, just not sure if they outweigh those of the OLED version.

Marginal and it happens with every device. There will always be those that have issues and in this case the squeaky wheels get the grease since people happy with theirs generally don't take to forums to say so. Trust me, get the OLED version. The screen quality will be much better than LCD for all the reasons LCD screens suck on small devices. I can see the desire for a new version though with the improved battery life, included storage, plus lighter weight. I just think people are way overblowing any burn-in issues the Vita might have.

Every OLED device I have owned has developed burn in, I just don't trust the tech at this point.

In the many gaming forums I frequent, I've never once heard burn in being mentioned as an issue with the Vita. Just like any display device, just use common sense.

I have been using my Vita far more than my home theater for the past year and I haven't had any issues at all with the screen. Ghosting and inferior contrast? No thanks.

Never had burn-in issues with my Vita screen either, just those black 'blotches' you see in a dark room but I understand that's inherent to the technology. Perhaps the 'OLED' Vita models may be worth something down the road, if they're going to be using LCD screens from here on out.

Too many systems and games....not enough time or money!

In all seriousness though I get ya and hey good thing there's an option for you now. As long as you can start enjoying the Vita that's all that matters.

But it was also revealed that the new model would ditch the OLED display for an LCD panel - a cost-saving measure that some suspect will reduce quality of picture. But House told reporters on Tuesday that the LCD display won't worsen the overall experience.

"The main reason is that the LCD panel can now realise an image quality as high as that of the OLED panel," House told the gathering of journalists.

According to House's quotes paraphrased by Japan newspaper Nikkei, the new LCD panel helps reduce the thickness of the handheld.

It has been rumoured that the OLED panel in Vita was difficult to manufacture due to the ease in which it could break during assembly

Sounds like PR BS to me. Not that LCD are terrible, but I haven't seen one approach the fidelity of OLED yet, especially on the small screen scale.

In another forum, someone posted the following comparison photos between the two screens, with the original OLED on top and the new LCD below it. I don't know the original source or how this person had access to the new Vita, so take it for what it's worth:

I actually didn't realize the new screen would be bigger, but the color differences, even in these non-studio setting photos, are what really stand out, if this is legit.

EDIT: upon doing a little research I've found that these photos were originally posted by the source on his Twitter account, and they have since been making the rounds through gaming media outlets: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/09/11/ps-vita-oled-vs-lcd-comparison-images-surface/

Damn. You're right. They should both be 5". Now I need to think about getting a second current model Vita as a back up or to sell in a year or two from now when they become a hot commodity.

Ouch! The graphics downgrade to the new Vita is pretty obvious here. And when the camera panned to the sides, it looked like the screen of the new Vita would be just as reflective of outside light sources as the current version, though I expected some improvement.

Quick question. I am thinking of picking up the instant game bundle here in Canada that comes with 13 free games, year of PS+ and 4gb memory card for my son for xmas before stock is gone. Would you guys say it is appropriate for a 4 year old? I know there are some games that may not require too much skill to play. He plays racing games and a few adventure games on the ipad. More trying to convince myself that its too good a deal to pass up and that he can grow into as he turns 5 in March. Was wondering if wipeout might be a game he could play out of the box. I think LBP, Uncharted or games like that might be too difficult for him to play yet.

Ha. Point well taken. The flip side is that I don't want it to be a paperweight for the next couple of years if there are no games that he can pick up and play at his leisure like he does with the ipad. Having 2 kids I can't see myself having too much time to game on it. I certainly don't mind helping him grasp concepts of the games but hoping there are a few that do not require too much dexterity with the thumbsticks.

It's a pretty wide range of games, nothing a 4 year old can't handle. Google "4 year old guitar hero", I think you'll be surprised what little kids are capable of.

I've gone on about how much I loved the innovative space shoot-em up Velocity, and the sequel Velocity 2X looks to be a major improvement in that you can now get out of the ship and do some 2D platforming action. They have retained a lot of the mechanics of the ship controls, and it looks like a lot of fun:

Tell me about it...go back and play Metroid for the NES now as an adult, I was amazed at how hard it was.

I never played the first one, but this looks pretty good. That kind of reminds me of Master Blaster from back in the day.

Yeah, it does have a strong back-in-the-day feel to it. The platform shooting reminded of Turrican from my Amiga gaming era when I first saw it.
