Just for kicks, I downloaded the PSN electronic release of Wing Commander IV from the PSOne Classics section...to reminisce in the "old days" of gaming. Having played these WC games since the days of 3DO, I thought I would enjoy a rose-colored glasses foray into yesterday...

...and it was excruciatingly excruciating. I can't believe how I got enjoyment out of these games back then! I thought the loads between sequences would at least be faster coming off a harddrive, but nooooo! Somehow the wait times are faithfully preserved, too?! It's a LOT of waiting, too! That's before you even get to the clunky flight control, horrendous 1st gen era graphics and FMV, simplistic sound effect scheme, and laughably bad acting, set props, and storyline.

I'm not saying that it coming off a ps3 should have transformed the experience to anything other than it was to begin with. I'm just amazed at how smooth and streamlined things have come since those days, and how we were able to extract any kind of fun out of those old games, whatsoever. I mean that game was the r o u g h, I tell you!

Games that rely on graphics will never stand the test of time because we continually increase our resolution expectations and the size of the screen. When I was playing playstation one games I was playing on a 25 inch screen. Now I'm playing on a 55 inch screen.

Games that were more about game play than shiny happy pixels fair much better when played today. That's kind of subjective though. I can still enjoy playing super Mario brothers from the original Nintendo.

I did the same thing Hanky, with Syphon Filter. I wish I hadn't.

It was literally unplayable.

Load times even in PSOne days aren't anything compared to load times on the C64 without an Epyx FastLoad cart.

The acting back in those FMV days was cheesy back then, it's not like we've just suddenly become hip to how corny it was. As for the graphics you'll be asking yourself in 10-15 years about the PS3 so just keep it all in perspective. At one time DVD was unbelievable compared to VHS. Now? Not so much.

The original Playstation has this stigma, that because it was very early polygonal gaming, the games age particularly bad. I can't totally disagree with this notion, because many games look very chunky when you go back and play the PS1 versions.

Still...

The original Playstation had some absolute smash hits. If you think about the quality of the games that were available in the first 6 or 8 months of the systems life. There was some amazing early PS1 games, no question about it. Sure, they don't look as good as they did in late 1995 and early 1996, but good games are good games. Good gameplay will shine thru. Also, for those lucky enough to have an RGB monitor, and an RGB cable for their PS1, then they can at least get the best video quality possible, and be able to see every little detail that the PS1 is capable of.

Try playing some Assault Rigs if you don't believe me. Or Wipeout XL. Or Loaded. Or Pandemonium.

Looking back, it seemed like it was more about the actual gameplay- the challenge; the joy of beating that one section after you tried it 37 times; the epic boss battles (back when boss battles were excruciatingly difficult...as they should be); the exploration; the music.

Today, we're graphic whores...or achievement/trophy whores...or production value whores. We're also older and our gaming palettes have changed. Obviously the games didn't change....we did.

Because we thought it was an amazingly cutting edge system stepping up from playing Atari on a B&W TV to the NES to the SNES, etc.

Personally I think 2d sprite games age better than early 3d games( Ps1,Saturn, N64). I recently downloaded Suikoden off PSN, and having a blast replaying the game for the first time in 15 years.

Too many systems and games....not enough time or money!

Yes and no. Part of that is just nostalgia speaking. In another 5-10 years, we might start to see retro games that look a lot like those early polygonal console games like Tomb Raider and Mario 64. But the other part of it is that the early 3D console era was pushing tech well beyond its meagre means. While 8-bit/16-bit era 2D games were the culmination of a decade's worth of tech. So there is perhaps a grain of truth.

Obviously, if we knew that stuff like Bayonetta or Skyrim were on their way, then we wouldn't have been satisfied with PS stuff. But we didn't. I mean, we conceptually did, but it was too far out.

Some games from that time period have aged poorly. I'm not surprised that Syphon Filter or the PS port of Wing Commander don't hold up. But a lot of games still do.

Ultimately this is true. Games that relied exclusively on graphics or new, unrefined styles tend to be the worst to hold up. Those that do were precursors to later game.

MGS, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Silent Hill, crash bandicoot, ect feel clunky, but ultimately they still hold up and I can appreciate them.

Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia influenced Uncharted, and while they now feel clunky, they still accessible. Others like siphon filter fall short now, because their selling point back in the day was their gfx.
