I am getting tired of these maintenance. I don't care about playing games online but I can't use Netflix which is basically all I use my PS3 for anymore. It will just keep bugging me to log into PSN and won't let me into Netflix.

Did not even fire up the PS3 to try the Netflix app today anyway. I watched two programs on my laptop earlier.

Earthlink Extreme powered by Time Warner Cable Brooklyn.
ASUS RT-N66W Router 374.43 (Merlin Build) using OpenDNS.
Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV 3, Roku 3, Sony PS3 Slim, Sony PS4 all Wired.

^^Didn't know about the maintenance and used Netflix this afternoon, and streamed several shows without issue.

Dazed and confused over high tech.

I've used Netflix when the PSN was undergoing maintenance. It will prompt you to login, then after it says you are unable to login you just hit the back button and Netlfix will load normally.

Seems weird to all of a sudden having day long maintenance outages. I don't remember these at any other time.

Wonder if maybe something PSN related is going to be announced at E3. PSN is long overdue for a major overhaul and upgrade.

I was doing various things on and off during the maintenance and didn't even notice. I downloaded a demo, watched some highlights on NHL and downloaded the patches for Resistance 3. The patches were pretty slow, but everything else ran fine. Makes me wonder what they actually do during these things.

It really is strange. You would think that they had figured out how to run a big network by now. Maybe it's something fundamental to how PSN was built and now it's too big to change it easily. Seems like something they should have fixed after the big shutdown last year.

It's a minor inconvenience, but it also seems unnecessarily archaic. I mean, what other major consumer entertainment networks have to shut down regularly for "maintenance"? The only other regular maintenance shutdowns that I experience are university networks, and those are far from the epitome of efficiency and competence.

The window, and the actual down time are usually two different things. IT professionals leave more than enough time to fix a big problem if something goes wrong. So while they slated 12 hours, they realistically only needed 4 and had it back online shortly.

Whats odd to me is they're doing it at peak play times in the US. I know their share of the market in the US has tanked, but so many young people are on US time as it is, it's weird. Especially since we know the regions are semi-segregated (remember how it was turned on by region after the outage?)

MS does the same thing with Live regularly, but it's usually between midnight and 12pm, when it'll hit the least amount of users.

Guess sony doesn't want to pay overtime to their non existent IT group.

Guess that's why I've never noticed. The only shutdowns I've ever seen on XBL were for major issues. AFAIK they used to do regular maintenance shutdowns on XBL, but now seem to save them for the big feature/interface rollouts (the way that Sony used to do theirs). I could be wrong though.

I'd argue that most people are at work or school between 7 AM and 6 PM on a Monday. And, I'd argue that you'll impact more gamers at midnight to noon than you will between 7 AM and 6 PM too. Seemed like a good window to me.
