Inspired by classic Hollywood and Asian cinema style action thrillers, Sleeping Dogs is a gritty open-world cop drama set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong. Sleeping Dogs catapults players into the role of undercover cop Wei Shen, tasked with taking down one of the world’s most fearsome criminal organizations from the inside... the Hong Kong Triads. As players explore the bustling and crowded Hong Kong island, through its neon-lit side streets and sprawling street markets, an incredible story unfolds of loyalty and betrayal where Wei begins to question his own motives as he is sucked in deeper than he could ever imagine.

Offering players an island packed with action, every street corner, market stall, harbor dock or city skyscraper can become an opportunity for intense shoot-outs, adrenaline-fueled street races and intense, brutal martial arts combat. Featuring one of the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems, Sleeping Dogs empowers players to perform an extensive set of martial arts moves, singlehandedly taking on numerous opponents. Players perform bone-crunching kicks and combos, vicious counters and a cinematic set of environmental takedowns making use of countless real-world items from circular saws to phone booths, incinerators to refrigerator doors.

I will be very happy to be pleasantly surprised by this game. It has been in development hell for far too long to expect it to be any good though.

Fair warning everybody: Temper your expectations. The chances of this being an absolute mess upon release are extremely high.

The caution is warranted since a release day 348MB patch is already confirmed for the PS3 version and also requires a 4.6GB install for the game.

The reviews from all the usual gaming site should starting hitting around midnight tomorrow or Tuesday morning.

Day one patches are perfectly normal. Required installations to get around the PS3's dog slow BD drive are a good thing. Neither of those are reasons to be wary.

The game has been in development for five years, has had three titles and has already been canceled once by a different publisher. Any game taking longer than three years is usually super-old before it's even released. Plus, canceled games tend to get canceled for a reason.

I agree.A good example of a game that suffered because of horrible game development management was L.A. Noire.Even though I really liked that game and it's still the only to date that I have gotten a platinum trophy for biggrin.gif

The game could have been better.

The game developer that gets some leeway for taking forever to develop, produce and release a game is R*. Which is why GTA V really better nail it and get back to being AWESOME and what made the company during the PS2 GTA era games because GTA IV was a big disappointment despite GTA IV somehow getting so many perfect 10 scores from major gaming websites & gaming magazines.

I'm willing to take a chance on sleeping dogs and I'm getting it on release because I'm fan of the movies the game is based off & related to and honestly the wait and lack of info from R* about GTA V is really annoying me to the point where I needed to play a new open world sand box game until GTA V releases hopefully by next spring.

Sleeping Dogs has gone through multiple publishers; at least one cancellation; and not just multiple titles, but also multiple IPs (it used to be a True Crime game). That doesn't mean it won't be fun. But games with such a troubled history are rarely as good as we hope. It can happen, though.

Since this game has no multi player. This sounds like good news:
Quote:
Sleeping Dogs Getting Six Months of DLC

Worried that after you finish driving around Hong Kong and beating up everybody who might possibly be opposed to you that you'll be out of things to do in Sleeping Dogs?
Not if Square Enix can help it.
The publisher has plans to offer six months' worth of DLC, ranging from new outfits to mission packs to new vehicles. According to Square Enix Studios London general manager Lee Singleton:
"Sleeping Dogs is a game we know fans will want to keep on playing, so over the next six months we'll be creating a series of new content packs giving players everything they need to keep enjoying the game. We want to create something to suit everyone's play style from cool cars and high-speed missions to outlandish outfits and game-extending mission packs. The game launch is just the beginning."
Among the packs teased were a SWAT theme, a Racing Pack, and a Retro Triad pack available this week which apparently includes a whole bunch of questionable '80s vehicles and fashion choices that Hong Kong cinema fans know and love.
We'll be able to start slamming heads in car doors and putting table saws to creative use tomorrow.

You really think if the game was such a mess that the developer would show that many mission walkthroughs? Clearly, they're not worried about showing their game to the public.

You never know. It wouldn't be the first time a game with a troubled history gets shown extensively prior to release. Again, not saying anything about this game in particular since I haven't played it yet. But the track record for games with this kind of history isn't good. As with any game, though, I always hope to be surprised.

None of those are sites worth trusting. Besides, a 8.5 at IGN is secret code for "piece of crap that gave us piles of cash money for a site take-over and early embargo". Those guys are the apex of shady games adver-journalism.

Related: If you aren't reading Penny Arcade Report, then you are reading the wrong gaming sites.

Another review from a perfectly respectable house. In short, you've played this all before, and it's rather tame and boring in a post Saints Row 3 world.

If you haven't played Saints Row 3 yet, get out of this thread right now and go play that brilliant product instead. Or grab Driver: San Francisco for another extremely unique take on the GTA formula. It's sounding like this game is a "wait for it to hit $20" title.

Or maybe I just enjoy Hong Kong Mobster movies and this is what this game is based around and plus I don't care for reviews and ride on one persons opinion or number given. Planning to buy this today. Saw the walkthroughs and it warrants a purchase for me because it looks like fun. That's all that matters. If I wanted to play Saints Row 3 I would have picked it up.

Seems like a perfect launch window for a game like this. At this point in the Great Gaming Drought of 2012, most folks will play anything with relatively high production values. But based on Eurogamer's review alone (the only major site whose reviews I respect), I'll pass for now. A 7/10 from them translates to "utterly forgettable." Sounds like a rental to me.

I just spent full-price on two games and both are brilliant titles - Persona 4 Arena and Guild Wars 2. No drought for me.

This game looks good. It's relatively novel for open-world. I'm sure I'd like it a lot. But by the time I get around to it, it'd probably be $20-$30.

So what's the problem then?
Quote:
You can also skip all the extra ******** if you like, and beat the main story in around 12-15 hours. Doing everything could take you as many as 20 to 30 hours, and you can also continue playing once the story has wrapped up to collect everything you missed the first time through and enjoy your powered-up character. While the sandbox genre may be racing to be bigger, better, faster, MORE, Sleeping Dogs backs up and keeps what works and throws out what doesn’t. This is what Grand Theft Auto might feel like with a good editor, and the result is a world where it’s easy to wander while never getting lost, and side-missions and collecting challenges that feel organic and well integrated.

You’re one of them

United Front Games stopped the race for more and decided to go after “better” instead, and it was the right move. The game’s combat system is as fun on the 100th fight as it is the first, and the game presents the player with a well-told story filled with characters that seem real, if over the top. These people all grew up in the criminal world of Hong Kong, and that shared history is referenced in ways that feel natural. This is a lived-in world that didn’t pop into being when you hit start; it was there before the game began and will continue to carry on after the game’s conclusion.

Sleeping Dogs doesn’t set up a sequel as much as it makes you question what you’ve accomplished through the story, and it reminds you that the survivors, and the broken social contract that ripped their once-ordered organizations apart, will carry on.

And by the way, SR 3 pretty much sucked. Boring to free roam and chock full of bugs. It's a two day Redbox rental at best. Brilliant it most certainly is not.

500 gigs FTW.

Saints Row 3 was complete TRASH.

I hated even spending $1.99 on a redbox rental for it for 1 one night.

Saints Row 3 had awesome missions but the open world aspects were just really bad, and the good stuff was rehashed from the previous games. Insurance Fraud and Hitman are fun but I have played it in 2 games already. The city was boring and there was a lack of clothing/customization options.

Overall I was disappointed, and I am a huge fan of the series.

I'll wait, as I've been pretty disappointed with open world gaming this gen. inFamous is pretty much the only new take I've enjoyed, and it was because of the superhero angle done right. GTA and RDR were horribly boring IMO.

Maybe this will shake it up, but one can only do so many car chase, clear the building, and package retrieval mission before getting bored. Rockstar lost something with some of it's more interesting missions in Vice City and Sand Andreas migrating to next gen, and no one else has picked up the torch. Open world you have this huge, living breathing playground.... get creative with it!

If you got something against this game, then by all means, don't buy it.

Your Penny Arcade link states that Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic game.

And then you post the Eurogamer article and tout how great Saints Row 3 is (when others in this thread disagree). One would question Eurogamer's, and yours, taste in this genre of games.

Believe whatever review you want to believe, and I'll read whatever game review I want to read.
