You're probably right about the "Super Slim" announcement, but I think most of the rest of that is wishful thinking. The Last Guardian is no more (or at least isn't what it would have been). The next GT won't be shown until we get a next gen announcement. Vita will get a few Japan-friendly titles announced that may or may not make the transition outside of the country. Yakuza 5 will get a separate Sega treatment. Zone of the Enders HD has already been announced and shown and given a Japanese release date (late October). And Metal Gear just got its teaser announcement a week ago.

TGS simply isn't a big deal anymore. It's not the time for lots of big announcements.

So far (30mins in) it's just a rehash of the same stuff shown at E3 and Gamescom, but for Japanese consumers.

--Only big news so far has been the "Super Slim" PS3 (bigger HDDs and smaller form factors, but no sign of the much-rumored built-in flash-only version). No change to existing prices. Not a good sign for Sony. They must really be hurting if they can't afford a price drop after a major hardware revision.

--PS Mobile given a launch date. Finally. Not sure if that's a global date, or Japan only.

--Soul Sacrifice delayed.

--Not much else to say.

Time to start preparing for the Vita's funeral.

And seriously, no PS3 price drop?

Well, technically, they actually raised the price because they're selling the lower-end model with all that "bonus" content and bumping the price from $250 to $270.

For me, that was the only real takeaway from Sony's presentation. Pretty shocked. They're heading into a holiday season against a brand new, similarly priced Nintendo console. They just announce a redesigned console (with a presumably much higher profit margin). Hardware sales are continuing to slide. They're clearly not putting any of their money behind their struggling portable. And still they don't drop the PS3's price?

My only guess is that because Sony Corp is hurting across the board, they're trying to push the PS3 as far into the black as it can possibly go.

There is a $250 barebones PS3 coming out after the initial bundles.

Complaining about stocks and shareholders in every other thread makes no sense when you could simply start a "Sony is financially doomed" thread and have it in one place.

Easy enough to put me on ignore if it bugs you. I'm pretty open about the fact that I think console manufacturers do more to hurt than help the gaming industry. I'm a gamer, not a console lover.

As a tech-geek, I like the hardware-centered perspective in these forums. And as a tech-geek, I'm also willing to acknowledge how deeply flawed the manufacturer side of the industry truly is (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, you name it, I pick no favorites). And I also happen to believe that the publisher side of the industry is even more f-ed up than the manufacturer side. When it comes to games, I will always favor developers and individual games.

If you don't appreciate or want to acknowledge those perspectives, put me on ignore. Simple. I won't take it personally.

Well, it was weird seeing the price drop rumors after the exec said clearly that there would be no price drop. Next year seems to be a lock though.

Nope. As my last response shows (no, the PS3 price is not going up), those mis-stated points should be corrected.

It was just a thought that rather than constantly take threads off-topic with "Sony is in financial trouble" talk (despite the fact that the PlayStation division stands as one of the company's strongest), it makes sense to make a thread to go at it to your heart's content.

Not surprised that they didn't drop price:

-Sony is still reeling from the disastrous PS3 launch where, even at $600, they were still losing about $200 per unit
-Sony corporate is in deep trouble and SCE is one of their few dependably profitable units; Sony as a whole needs SCE to keep laying the golden eggs
-last, and most significant, keeping the status quo on price shows that Sony is not worried at all about the WiiU; they think that the WiiU will sell in small quantities to not justify cutting price on their box (which, according to the disappointing WiiU preorder numbers, they may be right)

Wii U preorders have been in record numbers. They sold out with zero advertising.

To be clearer: Existing stock (Slim model) is still going for the current price ($250). New stock (Super Slim model) is going for the higher price ($270) as a bundle until some unnamed future date.

Sony is probably waiting for three things to happen before dropping the price and releasing a non-bundled sku:
1) They need to sell through old stock, which includes the old $250 systems. They can't undercut their own consoles by selling the new, cheaper ones at a lower price.
2) They're waiting until after the holidays so that can maximize profit margins on a cheaper-to-produce "Super Slim" model.
3) They probably want to see just how much they need to worry about the Wii U. If Wii U sells well, Sony can go into overdrive on the new PS3 model and sell it at a reduced price, well below the Wii U. And if they can get the 12Gb flash-based models into more markets, they can send prices even lower.

It's been stated in news reports that the non-bundled 250 GB Super Slim PS3 will eventually come out. Consumers can wait for it, buy a $270 bundle, or buy one of the existing Slim PS3 models for as low as $250. So again, no, the price is not going up.

Semantic argument over what counts as "new." I'll clarify in my post above.

While it was disappointing that The Last Guardian didn't make an appearance, it is really surprising that Final Fantasy vs. XIII didn't get mentioned.

The first of these two is definitely still coming for the PS3. Maybe Square-Enix will save FFvsXIII for next-gen, especially since the new FFFXIII starring Lightning will come out first.

Or perhaps Square Enix wants to make a separate announcement? Regardless, like we've all noticed over the last couple of years, TGS isn't a big deal anymore. It's not the time for publishers to make big announcements. It comes at the very end of a long season of much bigger trade shows (E3, Gamescom, PAX).
