v4.30 is coming, and with it a bit of cleaning up of the dashboard. The rather pointless, ignored, and never updated Playstation Life is going away. In addition, Trophies are moving over to the PSN heading, which, alright I guess. The Games heading was getting pretty crowded.
Housekeeping is a good thing. It's also nice to see an update do something other than simply attempt to block piracy and bring nothing else in the process.
Other than those still using the PS3 for folding (there are much better ways today), Playstation Life is a complete waste. It was poorly thought out from the beginning, and even had it been fully fleshed out it would still be worthless in this age of instant news and weather on our phones and tablets.
I agree that it was useless in terms of offering information to the user, but I still ran it in Expert mode to contribute to the Folding@Home project, and I'm sorry to see it go. (For some reason, the Windows version of the Folding application causes instability on my desktop machine, so I won't be running that.)
To be clear, it was hacked a long time ago (I posted about it here a month or so ago). However, those responsible had no intention of releasing it to the public, but when it leaked and another hacking outfit threatened to sell a hacking device for actual money, the original hackers felt that their hands were forced. So they released it (free) to the public today/yesterday. The new hack still depends on having firmware before 3.60. But, yeah, this latest will basically put the PS3 on equal footing with the 360 and Wii for the ease of hacking.
Not a good thing. But we're also pretty late in the hardware cycle anyway. And it may have the perverse effect of boosting Sony's sales figures through the finish line at a time when software releases are tapering off anyway. Though, as I've made clear before, I tend to think piracy isn't as big a problem as companies pretend it is.
I noticed something that I believe is new with this update. I noticed it when I used the PS3 browser last night (I know, it's a POS but I still use it occasionally ) There is now a box to check if you do not want the "do you want to run the plug-in" to display constantly. Seriously. Finally. I may now have to change my sig.
