You can copy save games to an external drive for backup purposes.
You can also read/copy files from the external drive (savegames, music, photos, video, etc...), provided the folder structure is created correctly, but you can't use the drive to install game content.

You should look into simply replacing the internal drive of the PS3 - it's relatively easy to do.

when you say "provided that the folder structure is created correctly" does this mean creating folders like Music, Game, Photo etc?
and so if this is correct you can play games and save them onto the external hardrive automatically?

Yes - you should ideally create all the folders beforehand. As for savegames, no, you cannot save game progress directly onto an external drive, you'll need to copy them to the drive after already saving them within the game.

You can check out this wiki article for more information: http://www.wikihow.com/Add-an-External-Hard-Drive-to-a-PlayStation-3

If you decide to do the internal swap, make sure you have the right screwdriver and piers for the nails.

I could not resist.

Another way to avoid what? YLOD or swapping hard drives?

You could delete content off your existing drive to free up space. You could stream media from a PC instead of storing movies and such on the hard drive, etc. There are ways around it, it's up to you to decide what fits your needs.
