One of my PS3s finally has a problem. The BluRay player on one of my slims has died. I have the PS3 apart, and looked on eBay for a new mechanism, but not sure which one I need to buy. Could someone with experience in purchasing these point me in the right direction?

I have the PS3 torn down to the drive. I know now I have a KEM-450AAA. The drive was clicking when trying to read, and when it does read it reads very slow. I am guessing the laser is going out, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Now I see all the different drives, lasers, etc. on eBay, and not sure what I should get to fix the problem.

EDIT: Trying cleaning first, didn't see anything on the lens before cleaning nor on the q-tip I used to clean it with. Will come back with the results.

Well, didn't work. The DVD laser works, but the bluray player is dead. I found the lasers with the deck for $30 shipped, which is only $5 more than just the laser mech. Not bad, really. Better than paying $$$ to have someone repair it.

How old is the unit? And how much play time did it get?

I don't remember how old it is. I got it during the special at GameStop when they paid me $250 for my 40 gig phat. It was not long after the slim was released. It had many hours of play time, probably around 8 hours a week on average just counting disc based games. This one didn't get much movie play, my second PS3 is used for streaming video and movies, this is the game room PS3, the other one is in my movie area.

My new mechanism came today. Right at $30 shipped. Installed it and it's all better now. Wasn't difficult at all to fix, and $30 is better than paying Sony what they want.

Nice job!

I wish it was the blu-ray drive on my launch 60GB that went. As we all know you can only do so many YLOD fixes. biggrin.gif

TornadoTJ, where did you order your new drive mechanism from?

I'm wondering what to do with my YLOD 60GB. I reflowed it, and it lasted long enough to do a data transfer to my slim, but it went YLOD again about ten minutes into a BluRay. I plan to put the drive in an external enclosure, but not sure if I should:
- sell it complete
- part it out
- send it in and get a refurb to sell

Thoughts?

It seems like the BluRay use is what's killing your PS3s. I rarely watch them on mine and it's lasted for nearly five years with lots of use from games and Netflix. So stop watching Blu Rays; they kill PS3s.

500 gigs FTW.

The games on discs are BluRay data discs. No different than watching a movie. Actually, more demanding on the drive because of the way the system retrieves the data.

Bingo. This is the gaming system and it sees heavy usage for games, which are as you said BluRay discs. That's how we first noticed the problem, the fact it wouldn't load Tiger Woods. When we tried to install Batman, it would fail after trying for a long time. Put in a DVD and it worked fine. Try a BluRay movie, no-go. My other PS3 is in the media center, where it sees a lot of BluRay movie watching. It's still going strong.

Yeah, I think it's a bit of hit n miss with the blu lasers failing. My only failure has been on my 40GB system that only sees bluray movie action for about half of the year. Not a heavy gamer, and I know I've watched more blurays on my other systems, but this is the one that failed.

As long as it is only occasional, I don't mind $30 to fix the problem. If it's every 2-3 years, I won't be too upset.

Same here, and thanks for the link to the EBay seller. Did it require signature upon delivery?
