Vudu and Netflix both use Dolby Digital plus as we all know. I have an old school fat PS3 and was wondering if anyone knew exactly how fat PS3's handle the decoding. I've looked through some other threads and have heard varied things, but I want to know if anyone knows a definite answer.

I know fat PS3's can't bitstream lossless audio from blu-rays. You must have them encoded internally and then be output as LPCM. Is this what the fat PS3's are doing for Dolby Digital plus as well?

I was recently watching Skyfall on Vudu and my receiver would display multichannel PCM, so I'm assuming that is whats happening. If it was downsampling to normal Dolby Digital I would assume that the receiver would reflect that. I own Skyfall on Blu-Ray as well and was just trying to compare the Vudu streaming quality. The video quality was decent but the audio left a lot to be desired.

So if anyone knows how the fat handles the audio please feel free to share. Also if you own a slim does it bitstream the Dolby Digital plus with it being displayed on the receiver?

I believe that the fat ps3's handle Dolby Digital Plus the same was as the slims. Bitstream & Linear PCM only applies to Blu Ray movies

I thought the fat PS3 model could not bitstream the advanced audio codecs? Whether DD+ or Dolby True HD, they are both advanced audio codecs.

I'm pretty sure it can bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Digital Plus since those are not advanced codes like DTS-MA and Dolby True HD.

DD+ is an advanced audio codec. DD+ and DTS-HD HR are both lossy advanced audio codecs. Dolby Digital and DTS are legacy audio codecs. And also lossy.

From what I've read the PS3 fat cannot bitstream any of the advanced audio codecs. I'm guessing because they had a version of HDMi that wasn't truly HDMI 1.3 which is the minimum version of HDMI needed to bitstream the advanced audio codecs. I traded in my fat when the slim was released and if i remember correctly bitstreaming was one of the reasons.

The Advanced audio codecs include DD+, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD HR, and DTS-HD MA. With Dolby True HD and DTS-HD MA being lossless audio codecs.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my slim bitstreams DD+ just fine.

Yes, the Slim has no problem bitstreaming the advanced audio codecs. Well not Dolby True HD from a 3D BD, but otherwise it's the fat PS3 that has issues.

Those codecs are for Blu Ray movies only. I'm pretty sure that all PS3's use LPCM fto output sound for apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus and Vudu.

I think Netflix is DD+ now on the PS3, Hulu uses DD. With Vudu, the last time i checked it the audio was borked. It's probably still sending PCM. Since I remember the 2.0 stereo or 5.1 audio was being sent in a 7.1 wrapper. Which also used to be the case with Netflix for a long time until they either fixed it or got bitstreaming working. I don't normally use my PS3 for those apps since the audio has been borked for so long.

I'll have o check it out when I get home.

LPCM and Bitstream are options for dvd or blu ray movies only. All apps use pcm for the sound. You can't choose bitstream or lpcm for the apps or games. Te ps3 will convert the sound it wont give your receiver the option of bitstreaming it.

That is incorrect. I just checked my PS3 slim with Netflix. It is bitstreaming the DD+ Netflix audio to my Denon receiver, not sending pcm. When it used to send pcm the audio was borked. It would send 2.0 or 5.1 in a 7.1 pcm wrapper and no post processing could be applied. They either changed it late last year or early this year to enable bitstreaming the DD+audio from Netlfix. At least on the Slim.

I also checked Vudu. It still sends pcm audio but at least they fixed the audio issues.I don't see the 5.1 pcm being sent in a 7.1 wrapper any more or 2.0 pcm being sent in a 7.1 wrapper. It took them a long time to correct that issue.

EDIT: I just checked the Amazon app on the PS3. That audio is still borked. It still sends PCM and sends 2.0 or 5.1 audio in a 7.1 wrapper. So no post processing can be applied. On stereo content it's like I'm back in the 80's before I got a surround receiver. With audio only from the FR and FL speaker. So the PS3 is still not an option for Amazon for me. But at least it is for Vudu and Netflix.

I was just watching some blu rays on my fat PS3 and noticed the ones with Dolby True HD would not play with surround sound. I assumed it was the new TV I was running the audio through. It never occurred to me that it was the PS3 that was at fault. You've saved me some trouble, thanks guys.

Not to derail the thread but I'm just getting in to the whole home theater thing and I was going to be using fat ps3 as my media player. Will I be missing out on if I use it?
Thanks!

As long as your receiver can handle 7.1 pcm you should be fine.

The fat does send 7.1 pcm doesn't it? I'm pretty sure it does but It's been years since I had a fat PS3.

The fat does send PCM. It is exactly the same sound as if it were bitstreamed. No worries.

And I can attest the slim will bitstream DD+ from Netflix. Amazon is PCM.

Whew! I was afraid I was going to have to buy another bluray player which really not in the budget.
