Might be a little belated on this one but Eurogamer had a pretty good article on upgrading the PS4's hard drive a little while back:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...-upgrade-guide

Here's the conclusion for those interested:

PS4 hard drives upgrade: Digital Foundry buying advice‚Ä®

PS4 Blu-ray games are seemingly identical to the digital releases, to the point where analysis of the disc itself reveals that the vast bulk of the data is contained in a single .pkg file - the same data structure as downloads from the PlayStation Network. All PS4 titles are designed to install and run directly from the console's hard drive, and we anticipated that there could be huge gains in switching to much faster storage solutions.

However, the reality is that while PS4 has much in common with the PC from an architectural standpoint, disk IO operations are much closer to the PlayStation 3 in practice. That being the case, just like PS3, outside of certain titles the benefits aren't quite as dramatic as one might expect should you choose to install an SSD into your console. Loading and install times are shorter - considerably so in some cases - but this doesn't translate equally across all titles. Performance also remains unchanged in all of the games we tried, with no clear measurable increases in frame-rate or reductions in tearing and judder at times when it appears that streaming could be one of the main causes. In short, there's no repeat of the scenario we saw last-gen where, for example, Skyrim ran much more smoothly from an SSD.

There are some improvements, though: the process of booting up the PS4, getting to the console's dashboard, and then loading up a game is noticeably quicker with an SSD installed in place of the stock hard drive, making system operation feel that little bit more fluid throughout day-to-day use. This alone isn't really worth the trade-off in diminished storage capacity compared to the 500GB drive that comes with the machine though, and we would hope that developers continue to optimise with the stock 5400rpm drive in mind, producing only limited returns for faster hardware.

A smaller improvement over the standard PS4 HDD is possible using faster mechanical drives, so if you require more storage and like the sound of faster loading times, a decent 1TB 7200rpm hard drive like the Z7K1000 we tested here provides a nice low-cost upgrade with plenty of space for your games, apps and other content - just don't expect massive increases in performance over the stock HDD across the board, and treat any faster operation as a bonus.

Of course, the fact that the PS4 is compatible with any 2.5-inch hard drive (with a capacity of 160GB or over) means that there are hundreds of options out there, and we wish we could have tested more of them. Something worthy of serious thought is a 2TB 5400rpm drive: typically, the higher the storage, the more data is crammed onto the platters, so while 5400rpm may not sound particularly fast, bandwidth does increase according to data density. If we were to start this feature from scratch, we would probably swap in one of these drives in favour of the hybrid SSHD - the variable success we got from the onboard caching suggests that the price premium isn't really worth it. On the flipside, while 2TB 2.5-inch 5400rpm drives are expensive, USB 3.0 "passport" variants are actually cheaper, and only a little pricier than the hybrid drive. There's another bonus too: prise the drive out from the enclosure and not only do you have a PS4 upgrade, you also have a caddy in which to house your old 500GB HDD.

However, the fact that the hybrid offers up some occasionally decent gains in performance does open up a tantalising proposition. The PS4 reserves an area of the hard drive (believed to be on the outside of the platter, where performance is best) for game developers to cache data. What if Seagate worked with Sony on a bespoke drive upgrade that ensured that the SSD flash was used exclusively for the cache? Combine that with a 7200rpm drive and we could be looking at the best of both worlds - SSD speeds where it could really make a difference, combined with the cost-effective level of storage that an SSD can't provide right now.

The xbone is ok I guess. Its pretty much what I expected going in. The ability to pin stuff on the home screen is nice. Having to log in every time sucks but its leftovers from going Kinectless. If I hadn't traded to get there I would have passed until it was $300. A few minor things I like but personally the PS4 does everything I care about so much better. Its nice having both again though. Don't know why I feel that way but I guess having both last gen for so many years just left a hole with one missing.

Hey xb1 newbie, you can set the console to log you in automatically.

I choose one because I only have the time for one console... I already have a backlog of PS4 games.

Best to just go to Xbox.com that always has the most accurate info. Xbox Wire is a good source because they show what releases and what's being updated.

I looked at everything last night and it looks like everything was saved in the cloud as it should be. So I figure I should be OK in just restoring everything from what's in the cloud. Every file I looked at to save had the same size and date that the online file had. SO hopefully I won't have any issues.

Now I just need to empty a USB flash drive and format it to FAT32 and download the most recent PS4 software.

More accurate would be saying the PS4 does very little better than the PS3, seven months in. (If you compared to PS3 seven months in, the PS4 is leaps and bounds better).
I only use WiFi on mobile devices. My PS4 and PS3 are both wired. I'm only playing games on the PS4. I'm playing games and using media apps on the PS3. I'm sure that eventually I'll start doing more than games on the PS4 but for now the PS3 works better for me as a media player.

I'm not sure why I'd compare what the PS3 was doing 7 months in. I was stating what's going on now because now is the time frame in which I exist. I think it would be a mistake for a non-gamer to trade in his PS3 for a PS4 right now in this present time reality.

I wouldn't trade in my PS3, no way, so I definitely agree with this. Just pointing out that the PS4 does do a few non-gaming things better than the PS3. The number of things it does better will grow over time, which was why I compared it to the PS3 seven months in. But right now, it is definitely feature lacking in comparison.

For me the PS3 is still a fantastic 3D-BR player and 3D capability I must have. I'm not saying there aren't better 3D players out there but since I already own one that performs great for my purposes I've no need to replace it. Then coupled with PS+ and the "free-ish" PS3 games I get every month, welp to put it plainly my PS3 draws electricity on a regular basis.

On the subject of the PS4, I must admit I was initially highly skeptical of claimed improvements for Tomb Raider Definitive Edition. I first played TR on the PS3 thanks to PS+ however my buddy loaned me his DE last week. After spending a good 15 to 20 hrs with the DE I am now fully in the camp of "holy effn wow this game and protagonist (O.O) look awfully good in full 1080P!" Smooth as butter gameplay as well. It's a damn fun and tight game, I'm rather grateful that someone finally convinced me to give it a chance.

Yes! I played the PS3 version again and man the difference is so dramatic and the PS3 version was a great looking game for its time.

I hope the difference feels similar for The Last of US.

Tomb Raider DE is the reason I paid off The Last of Us Remastered the day it was announced. I'm done with PS3 for everything but the Tales of games. Xillia 2 and Zestiria need PS4 versions...

I wish I could be done with previous gen like some of you, but with PS+ I don't want to let go of my PS3. It'd be easier for me to get rid of my 360, but I still have quite a few digital download titles on there that I wouldn't want to part with.

Maybe I'll just ditch the 360 and buy a Vita. Haha.

So 2014 has a ton of PS4 exclusives...most of which i guess are indie/2D/sidescrollers:

Wow!!!! This update system is nice. I wish the XBOne hard drive could be upgraded like this.

Replacing the hard drive took only two to three minutes. No messing around with some super tiny screw like I had to with the PS3. Five decent size screws that could be unscrewed with a normal phillips screwdriver. It couldn't be much easier

The thing that actually took the longest was downloading the 750MB update file since it was only downloading at 16Mb/s. I put the file on a USB 3.0 flash drive.

Initializing and Installing the update was quick. In just under five minutes the PS4 had finished installing and rebooting. And I was logging into the PSN.

Now I'm downloading all my content. That looks like it might take some serious time since the download speeds seem slow like the update file was.

But I am certainly pleased with the process. I just hope the HGST Travelstar 7200rpm drive I put in is fine. My Amazon package was waiting when I got home. I just put it into the PS4 right after I opened the box. I never even tested it. I even forgot to take a picture of it for the serial number. But it seems fine so far. It seems quiet like stock drive was.

EDIT: I see I need to wait until the game is installed before I can download the save file from the cloud. So I guess I'll need to let the PS4 download everything tonight and tomorrow and download the save files when I get home from work tomorrow.
