I'm not convinced that Morpheus will do well on the PS4. After Kinect and Move ended up with little compelling support from developers, I think most people are going to be apprehensive about buying another expensive peripheral. If sales are slow, then developers will be apprehensive about putting money into making games which will cause sales to slow even more, and so on. Kinect's problem wasn't the hardware, it was the lack of games, which caused more people to not buy it, which caused more devs to not support it.

Hopefully I'm wrong and hopefully Morpheus can come in at under $200 because, I was burned by Kinect on the 360 and I'm not going to fall for this type of thing again.

I thought the scenario was that your spouse is using your TV, so you stream your Xbox to your PC, but your PC has only a 24 inch monitor, so you use the Oculus to play on a giant virtual home theater screen.

Not a super compelling case, I agree, but I can imagine a few people doing it, if they already own an Oculus.

The problem both Kinect and Move had was that they needed more. I actually loved both in the end though I was kicking and screaming but what I mean by more is more games, more unique features, more nextgen ahem currentgen. Kinect is a colossal failure on the xbone because its been left to die. Voice commands woo. Freakin. Hoo. Move at least has a lifeline with Morpheus. I'd love to see Kinect actually do more cool stuff. The PS camera is pretty basic but even it with Playroom has a lot of potential. If Morpheus has that more right off the bat it will do well. A $400 price tag for a display isn't bad when some of us are laying thousands out anyway. Joe Masses who already have tthe console won't be too hard of a sell but yea somebody looking at $800 to play a VR game won't be an easy sell.

VR will flop and I am glad of it. We won't get real VR until someone invents the holodeck like in Star Trek as that is true VR without no annoying heavy headset.

Maybe this will be announced in a couple of days at e3, or maybe in a couple of months. Various Oculus reps have been interviewed over the last year or so, and have been asked if Oculus will ever come to the consoles or work with the consoles. I definitely remember these Oculus representatives smiling in a strange way when asked this question. This may have been brewing in the background for quite some time. Oculus has said they are very interested in working with the console companies, and I think they stated that they will have something to announce in that regard at some future point.

Obviously, Sony has it's own headset, so Microsoft seemed like the obvious partner.

You know.... speaking of Tron...

I've heard repeatedly that everybody is going to need to lower their expectations on the graphical quality of the worlds in VR. People expecting photorealistic graphics in VR will be sorely disappointed.

But you take a world like Tron. Tron is almost like a cell shaded world. A neon shaded world. I think that would be absolutely awesome in VR, and I think it wouldn't be as intensive for the hardware to run it. I can't wait for the first Tron world I can "step into" via the HTC Vive

( The Vive is currently my favorite VR headset considering the fact that you can actually "step into, and walk around inside of a game". With all the other VR devices, it seems you can be seated or standing, but not actually walking around in an enclosed space. Standing up is cool, but I want to actually walk around inside the VR world )

Honestly, it's extremely hard for me to imagine VR being a complete flop. Sure, the first 5 to 6 years may be rough, and it's going to have it's up's and downs, but to me, VR is like a runaway train that has left the station and can't be stopped.

Essentially, VR is about making your dreams come true. I mean, when you really boil it down to the essence, VR is wish fufillment. It's fantasy fulfillment. It may take some time for us to get there, but eventually we will have 8K screens for each individual eye. Pixels will be totally forgotten, and photo realism will be completely possible. Also, the size and weight of the headsets will continue to get smaller and smaller and more and more lightweight.

Eventually wireless. Eventually feeling only slightly heavier than a pair or sunglasses.

So, the whole "having a big thing strapped to my head" argument is something that will have dissipated within 10 to 15 years from now.

Yet, the wish fulfillment will just continue to get better, and better and better.

There are so many non-gaming applications that people aren't thinking about. First of all. think about the entire male population that has hit puberty or beyond. Imagine a scenario in which you are in this photorealistic room, and a drop dead gorgeous model walks into the room and starts seducing you. I hate to bring it back to porn, but seriously, how can this possibly fail? I think anybody that is naysaying this will have flipped 180 degrees as soon as they see what is possible regarding wish fulfillment.

Again, what I'm talking about might still be about 10 to 15 years away, but I just can't see a scenario in which 7 out of 10 males aged 17 to 40 aren't using VR headsets every single day. Also, women will be into it as well. In Japan, already they have this setup where two girls are wearing VR headsets, and they are snuggling with each other, but instead of seeing another girl in the headset, they are seeing their favorite teen idol. They are basically pretending to be in a relationship with their favorite teen idol. You don't think that shiz is going to happen worldwide ?

I disagree. First, the average consumer is not going to look at it as a "display", it's a console peripheral and a $400 price means DOA. That's the price of the PS4, if I'm spending that much money I'll just buy a second PS4 or an X1, not a peripheral that will have limited software support. Like I said, I think VR will be a niche product at best and I'm sure there are plenty of folks on AVS that will be willing to spend the money but, AVS folks are not the average person. I just don't believe the average person will spend that much on a single VR headset.

I really feel like VR has to get to $200 or less to have any chance at widespread appeal.

I think VR is just like 3D. It's something that was fun over 20 years ago and is coming back for another run. It will get a lot of press at the start and then fizzle out in a few years. Then people will be left wondering why they bought this thing, just like I'm scratching my head wondering why I bought a 3D TV.

The recommended hardware specs for the Oculus Rift are pretty high though (GTX 970/AMD 290 and i5-4590). The graphics card alone costs almost as much much as an XB1.

I agree with Rolltide, $400 is just too much for the average person to shell out for an add-on. While it sounds neat in theory, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to see if it really will be worth it. I'd hate to spend that much and have it sitting around collecting dust like my Kinect is.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly. Crap I say

It just begs the question, if you have the required min spec computer with a GTX 970 at 4x more graphical power than XBoxOne , than why wouldn't you just play a real VR game on that?

It's just an arbitrary spec oculus chose so devs would have something to target. VR can function on less (see gear VR), and since the Xbox is also a fixed platform it's manageable. It's not out of the question. Whatever PS4 can do with VR, Xbox can a slightly lower res, same deal as any game.

Exactly! When the Kinect launch on 360 it was $150 and I felt ripped off 6 months later. No way I jump in first on VR at $400 and take a chance at that happening again.

Anthony knows what's up. Yea the first phase will be $400 (maybe) and might blow but look at the first iPhone. Those of us that love new toys will be on board price be damned. Everyone else will follow IF and only IF the product lives up to expectations or is reasonably close. After time it will shrink in both price and cost. Now I think this is a far different ballgame than motion controls and 3D ever were. This basically integrates all of that, in a nutshell. So its a whole new thing that hasnt been done before or done very well. Ooh I can't wait. One of the few things I am actually looking forward to in the near future. Too geeky not to be excited about.

Edit: oh and porn. That's a VR mover.

I havent bothered to really pay attention but is the Oculus actually going to connect to the X1 or is it functioning with you PC for games streamed from X1?

Streaming. But I bet itll directly connect eventually. Especially if they're basically making it win 10 exclusive, they're already doing all the major work to bring it over to xbox one just by doing that.

Which would you suggest - Drive Club or Project Cars? Or are they sufficiently different?

What remains is a looooong list of titles that I unfortunately just have to ignore including Shadows of Mordor, FIFA 15, GTA V, BF4 MP, Advance Warfare, all the Lego games, Wolfenstein, Minecraft, Evolve, LBP3, NHL 15, the Metro games, MLB 15, Mortal Kombat X, Rayman Legends and whatever else I can't think of. Hell the MXGP 14 looks damn cool!

Then there are all the very respectable PS+ offerings (ie Vandal Hearts, Guacamelee, Never Alone, Apotheon, etc) that don't get played much. I truly am experiencing an embarrassment of gaming riches. I can't play them all. But that's just me.
These that you mention are pretty recent. Yeah, VH, Guacamelee -- these all seem to be really decent games, and it's hard to be bored with PlaystationPlus. It's getting better.

However, for the longest time, it does seem like most of the PS4 Playstation Plus games have been simpler, indie games. Decent games, but limited. Bit Trip Runner 2? Ibb and Obb? Stick it to the Man? I dunno, interesting for a short while, but they just didn't grab me for more than a few hours. It's not like I don't like simpler, indie games -- I played one on the PS3, whose name escapes me at the moment (Eden?), for the longest time.

Good thing for Rayman Legends -- this is basically what has gotten the most use on our PS4, and it really is great. But, you know, we probably coulda used the PS3 for that. You can probably say the same for the Lego games or Minecraft. I will say, though, that the graphics look great. Hard to complain, but I think we're still waiting for something more compelling.

As far as fan noise on the PS4, I don't hear it. It seems good to me. I don't have an initial-launch PS4, so maybe that makes a difference? Anyway, my PS3 sounds like a jet taking off.

The Wii U gets as much play. Mario Cart 8 looks great and is really polished.

If I really had a complaint about the PS4 it's that the controllers need constant charging. The PS3 controllers seem to last through many sessions. The PS4 controllers need recharging almost after every use. It's crazy.

Well, Sony's event can officially be known as resurrection Monday. The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3, Final Fantasy VII remake, every long since rofled into the ground rumor just made official.

Sadly, each one of these was leaked ahead of time, but the brilliant part was that few even entertained the rumors.

More like remake Monday. Shenmue is just a kickstarter and not even in production yet. FF7 HD remake. What else an exclusive dlc for destiny and batman. Firewatch timed exclusive, COD exclusive DLC. So far this is the most unimaginative Sony E3 I've seen.

Maybe, but realize two of those 3 are internet wide/popular/demanded titles. Announcing them on the Sony stage does much to associate the titles with the console, so good change sales numbers will be higher on PS4. Just as CoD sold more on xbox, it stands a chance to sell lots on ps4 and possibly get some the hardcore players who compete to switch platforms.

Horizon: Zero Dawn looks stellar and comes from the house of Killzone, media molecule brought another standard title from their studio, and The Last Guardian is by far one of the most anticipated titles since PS4 was launched.

Welp, Black Ops 3 is a Titanfall clone for the combat... not happy about that...

"Playstation is the new home for Call of Duty" those words have a lot of weight to them... never thought I would hear them.
