Okay, its asking me to create a account based on email, but it doesn't ask me to pick a nickname or screen name or gamertag or whatever its called on PSN. So ... what am I missing?

The Wii U FINALLY flexes it's graphical muscle.

Not that impressive after seeing Final Fantasy XV. Still probably going to be one of my favorites ofthe generation.

Pretty sure you will pick your username from the console. At least that's how I remember it.

Basically they're going after "But Live is better". Looks like their "social push" is more just tying a much better OS together to make everything connected and easier. Switching between everything live and on the fly, they showed p2p voicechat (but not party, but I believe PSV already has that covered?), a facebook like profile, texting, downloading SP/MP separate and installing while you play something else with a notification when it's ready to play.

Hopefully it's not just a proof of concept, but real. I'd be pretty impressed, as front end system software has never been SCEE's best foot. Maybe they went to Cerny and SCEA for that too (Smart).

Yeah....its one of those things that we'll actually need to try out, before we truly understand the limitations. But it seems like they've got all the bases covered, and then some. I dont really have any desire to skype, share or broadcast video, etc.....I just want it to be easy to connect to friends and games, as seamlessly as possible. My concern is less about the functionality, than the speed.....I hope it's as responsive in reality as it was in the video.

It's not a touchdown until I hear that the ps4 includes an IR receiver and I can use my harmony remote.
I wonder why they put the cable connections on the top half of the box? Or is that pic upside down?

I was just about to ask about native IR support myself when I saw your post. I'd really like to know - alternatively, they should make the existing Harmony PS3 BT->IR adapter compatible with the PS4. Either work for me.

IR will be nice to include. I haven't seen one way or another yet. As for the system itself don't know. The pic is correct, the connections are on the top. Shouldn't really matter and maybe they did it that way because of where the power supply is.

Well yeah, of course. It's a "Way of life" video. What, the wearing sunglasses indoors and looking in the fridge for food (and oj apparently) don't speak to you? What about his taking time to play his guitar? The disappearing pizza shows he's in a serious gaming mood. They all seem to be friends and there are indeed female gamers out there that are proactive so it's no impossible. Still yes the cringe factor is high with this video and frankly I haven't been 25 in ten years so this video doesn't call to me in any meaningful way.

Talk about a blowout. My decision between two products has never been easier. You'd have to be one diehard fanboy to be thinking about buying an Xbox right now.

Anyway, just preordered a PS4 from Amazon. Are full game installs mandatory this time around? If they are, I'm not sure how long a 500 gig drive will last. Hopefully we can upgrade them ourselves like last time. If we can, I'll probably throw a TB drive in it day one. If full installs are mandatory anyway. Otherwise, I'll leave it as is because I can't even come close to filling up the 500 gig drive in my PS3.

Some hardware stats.

Controllers are $59, Camera is $59.

PlayStation®4 system × 1
Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4) × 1
Mono headset × 1
AC power cord × 1
HDMI cable × 1
USB cable × 1

Phew, looks like I wont need to be sending anyone a free cable. smile.gif

Also looks like the PSU is internal, no giant power brick.

It comes with it because it only has An HDMI output.

Quick question:

I own a 360 now and like the parental control wherein I can allow my child to chat with people on his friends list but no others. Therefore, he can play in public lobbies but not hear disturbing language. Can this be done on PS3 now? My online research seems to indicate a chat or no chat option.. but not based on friendship.

So is there a mic in line, or are we expected to use the little speaker on the controller to talk to others? I always have my kids around, so I like to be able to keep my mic muted until I need to talk, and I don't see how they can do that if we are using the mic or whatever it is on the controller to talk to people.

Looks like the PSU is right beneath it. I bet that circle fan intake is right on the bottom of that side as well, and they've designed that entire side to be cooled. The other side looks like the top is the BD drive, bottom probably the HDD bay.

Really hope this thing is quiet AND cool. BD playback should be very low wattage with their dedicated chips, so no worry there; but wonder about gaming...

Any Screenshots of the UI Yet? Will they finally abandon the XCrossbar like the vita did?

I am guessing that they are going to have a system like the xbox where you will install the game and it will just need to spin the disc up on start, and they you play it from the hard drive. That would make it run a lot quieter. Also, I am betting that they will use the install as you go feature with this somehow. I don't know much about this kind of stuff, but it would be nice to let you install while you play, and once it's done you just run it from the hard drive.

I doubt full game installs are mandatory otherwise the system would more than likely be running into the same issue people don't like about the One; i.e. that discs are essentially worthless. Of course then again they could take the PC route and do game installs but need the disc as verification (ala 360 this gen as well). I guess I have no issue if the disc is still needed although I do like that MS mandates an install and allows your library in the cloud. Too bad there's not a way of verifying ownership without the disc and keeping cloud installs and getting the best of both worlds. As it stands now the PS4 is could potentially be a hybrid of the PS3 and the 360. Seems that way.

Looks that way. Interesting also that both systems no longer support analog connections.
