Pointless. Unless you like deleting game data and reinstalling it constantly. Parents everywhere are going to be mislead into buying this thing and then having to fork over another 80-100 bucks later for a HDD size that actually makes some form of sense. This is a very pathetic move on Sony's part.

I know some advocates are going to say that the PS3 does more than play games. But I'm not buying it. This is garbage.

Edit:

Here, thrifty consumers, go for this one instead:

http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/detail.jsp?skuId=1461012&pid=1219052013515&ep=pv-3.0.5,rc-av,av-0,rk-2

For seventy bucks more, you'll get:
Quote:
Bundle

Includes PlayStation 3 500GB console, DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller, AC power cord, A/V cable, USB cable, Grand Theft Auto V game and PlayStation Plus 30-day trial voucher.

500 gigs FTW.

This is the one that uses flash memory right? Would there be any performance advantage in running a game installed in flash memory as opposed to a HDD?

I can see the $200 one being a good replacement for those that suddenly get a YLOD or RLOD. They could probably still use their old HDD but will have to reformat and lose everything.

Although that $270 bundle is a freaking steal.

It's pretty lame to offer a 12GB console these days, but there are situations where it can be useful so it's not a complete bad idea I guess.

I wish this was available last year when I got a 250 GB PS3 super slim for $250. Since I was locked in to putting a 500 GB drive into the unit, having the 250 GB drive was a waste. I would have saved $50 if this new one were offered.

It depends on how fast the flash is, and how it's interfaced with the system. If its cheap flash routed through USB (like the 360 slim), it will be slower than a HDD. If it's a mini-SSD routed through SATA, then it'll prob speed loads up a bit. Someone's got to take it apart first before we'll know.

I see, thanks. These have been out in Europe for a while I think but I can never find any info on how exactly they work. I'm curious if the 12GB is still available after you install a HDD. Maybe it shows up in the XMB like a card or USB device.

Does anyone know the cost of the hard drive bracket, the little metal holder that attach the hard drive to the PS3? Is it compatible with older PS3 hard drive bracket because I'll think many of us had a failed "fat" PS3. Would be nice to be able to save some money using an old hard drive bracket.

If it's like $10 or more, then that adds another extra cost to the internal hard drive if you do install a hard drive on the 12GB PS3.

One thing I found with accessory is many gamers don't think of the total accessories cost will when buying the "cheap" model of the console.

Does it even need a bracket? I imagine whatever you need is already built in.

Looks like it costs around $10. You can't use the fat PS3 bracket according to this guy:

You need to buy a bracket to install an HDD in the 12GB PS3? Very stupid move by Sony.

At the least they could have thrown in a cheapo plastic bracket.

Guess they need to cut those costs everywhere though. Nvidia really did screw them on their long term prospects, and I'm doubting we'll ever see a $100 PS3.

According to the person in the quote, the hard drive bracket shape is unique to the 12GB PS3 model. So, it will cost at least $10 or more (depending where you buy it) just to add a hard drive.

I think once the PS3 with built-in hard drive price drops later this year for the holiday, it may get close to the 12GB PS3 model. So you think 12GB PS3 model price can get around $150?

Why would Sony throw in a bracket for the hard drive? For the 12GB model to drop to $199, Sony needs to get the profit back elsewhere like make you pay for expensive accessories that the PS3 requires to have. As we already know, current 250-500GB hard drive PS3 model are already dropping in price. Question is when their price can get close to $200.

I dunno what it looks like on the inside, but SATA ports tend to be pretty snug. As long as you dont pick it up and shake it it'll prob stay connected.

I used to do that with slim X*60. Got a compatible laptop hard drive, flashed it to be compatible with X*60 but without an external holder, the hard drive was kind of floating on the SATA IO. Only thing with PS3 is if the hard drive gets loose from the SATA IO without a bracket to hold it, you have to be careful not to "corrupt" the encryption on the hard drive. If it does, you loose all the data on the hard drive because PS3 will not recognize the last encryption and wants to reformat it.

Personally, I'm more curious if the 12GB model is the newer CECH-4200 because it supposed to run cooler. PS3 since CECH-2100 through CECH-4000 have been running the same "fab size" processors.

Here is a walkthrough pictures of how the CECH-4x00 hard drive bay looks like to install a hard drive.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/how-to-change-the-new-super-slim-ps3-hard-drive-6396942/

From the pictures, without a hard drive bracket, you need to put a pad or something on the hard drive to prevent it from shaking around. To be able to take out the hard drive, you can probably glue a tape on the hard drive to let you pull the hard drive out later.

I saw a youtube video where a guy used 2 pieces of cardboard to snug fit the HDD... then he used a metal screw clip to hold it in place. It was good a snug. Im at work so I cant get to you tube right now.

Im thinking of doing the same thing. I have a broken ps3 with a 500g. I'm going to get a 12g model and just let the hdd float. I dont move my PS3 around.

From the link above, I think you can also use a hard thin plastic as the hard drive holder. All you have to do is cut holes on the hard thin plastic for air vents and fold each side with L shape. Best is if you can get a thin sheet of aluminum, cut with right size and fold each side with L shape. That is what the official hard drive bracket is anyway. Another idea is get some bumper pads that is sticky on one side. Those pads are usually thicker and about right size to fill in the open space with the naked hard drive and the PS3 hard drive slot. And put a tape on the hard drive so that you can pull it out later if needed. If I get a 12GB CECH-4x00, I probably do something like this since I'm too much of a cheapo to pay a few bucks for an official hard drive bracket.

Has anyone physically seen or bought the 12GB model to check if it's CECH-4200 model?

Here's a detailed article on 12GB PS3. The author did benchmark on the 12GB flash storage. While writing to the 12GB flash can be faster than hard drive depending on the game, deleting files is super slow compared to the hard drive.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-playstation-3-12gb-super-slim-review

My opinion if you want to get another PS3 console, get the CECH-2500 if you can find one. CECH-3000 is very similar to CECH-2500 except Sony reduced the cooling fan from 120mm to 80mm and removed other parts such as power and eject LEDs and radio noise metal shield. Until there is a new CECH-4x00 model that reduces the size of the processors, there is no real value on this series. According to the article above, 12GB PS3 model is still based on CECH-4000. The upcoming CECH-4200 is still unknown as of what Sony changed. The guess is the processors size reduction but there is no proof at this time.

Update:
I saw my local Best Buy store has 12GB PS3 with CECH-4201 model. No info what changes in CECH-4201 I can't see what's inside the console.

Isn't this model's only point to offer a cheap price? Now Sony finally has a PS3 model that can be price competitive with the cheap 360s.
