The developer is shooting for a 2014 release:
Quote:
LORDS of the FALLEN is an action-RPG featuring advanced combat systems and robust class skill trees. Set in a richly created fantasy world where the Gods have failed mankind, players will take on the role of a human named Harkyn who sets out on a quest to stand against an apparently unstoppable supernatural force. Players travel across a world that is deeply divided by those who follow, and others who resist, the Fallen God. Along their journey they will be faced with a series of decisions that will alter both their gameplay experience and their character.

Along their journey they will be faced with a series of decisions that will alter both the world and their character thus dramatically impacting the storyline."

CI Games, the company behind Sniper: Ghost Warrior, is in charge, although it's a separate team doing the honours - most of the work is being done by experienced German studio Deck 13.

Promisingly, Lords of the Fallen will have been in development for two years come September. "It's a hardcore game, so we spent a lot of time prototyping it," executive producer Tomasz Gop - once the face of The Witcher 1 & 2 - told me at Polish event Digital Dragons.

The aim is to get it out at some point next year.

"It's a challenging game, action RPG, which means a lot of advanced combat," he explained. "When you walk through a location, and you have to fight 10 enemies, that takes around an hour.

"When you fight in Mortal Kombat, when you fight in Tekken, that's why it takes so long - Dark Souls is probably a strong reference as well. But we've done a lot of things differently. For example, we have a skill tree. I would call Borderlands here, because we're gonna have something like action skills in the game, so classes, stuff like this.

"I would say Dark Souls, I would say Borderlands in terms of the experience of developing your character."

Yes that means trial and error-style gaming, yes that means skill-based gaming and yes that means the game will be hard.

"What do I think? Very brave, so to speak, decision from Microsoft. Still, the question is whether or not somebody had to do it sooner or later. I'm not personally worried about it myself because as a player it's doable at my home. Even looking at countries like Poland ... there are people who do not have internet, but probably most of them know that it wouldn't even make sense in their case to own a current-gen console, because without the internet you have like half of it [the experience].

"I don't expect it to be that big of a deal, personally. Still, I'm not [an] advisor on that - if it was up to me I probably wouldn't do it so early."

"Yes. Yes. Yes, yes," Gop emphatically stated on that latter point. But harder than Dark Souls? He's not sure, apparently it's a game that needs to be played to be understood. "It's one of these games that feels way better than it looks," he said, "not that it's going to look bad".

Not at all; working on a multi-platform PC and next-gen console project has been "way better" than a PC and current-gen project, he said. "It's way more comfortable." And the new machines can achieve more. "The specs are pretty much known," he said. "It's gonna have a lot of things the previous generation didn't have: all those eye-candy elements like DX11, tessellation, anti-aliasing," and at no cost to gameplay.

"I can't talk too much about the next-gen Xbox," he added, "but I don't think a lot of people [are] going to be surprised. I don't think it's going to be huge news what's inside, no - seriously."

He could talk about what 8GB of GDDR5 RAM in PS4 meant for Lords of the Fallen, though. "Way more richer detail on all of the assets," he said. "For example, I couldn't even imagine making a tessellated game on the current generation of consoles. It might even be one of the biggest gaps. And on the next ones [consoles] it's going to be standard, in my opinion. And you just can see more on the screen right now, because it's gonna fit and the memory's gonna be fast."

If this is a thing, Gop "seriously" hasn't heard of it, but does have an opinion about it. "Personally I understand people who buy pre-owned games, who sell them. I never will disrespect anybody and I will never encourage anybody, and I will never stand on the side of anybody banning that, personally.

"But then again I'm not a businessman, I'm a developer. If somebody feels like he can't make ends [meet] without it, it's gonna be his decision, and he's going to take it on his chest with all the storm that comes with it. It's his choice. Personally, I'm not in favour of this feature. Players don't want it, and a bigger part of me is a player."

Counter-balancing that, however, is his first-hand experience that next-gen game development "means longer development times for really blown up games".

"Yeah," he continued, "because you not only have to produce more assets if you want to have a rich world - who doesn't? - but also these assets take more time, more money, more iterations. The assets that we're already doing for Lords of the Fallen are more expensive and take a bit longer to produce because they are better."

A next-gen game is "probably doable" with a current-gen-sized team, he reckons, "but I believe if you want to take advantage of the hardware it's going to take longer".

Increased raw power aside, it's the new features like video sharing that Gop thinks Sony and Microsoft will use to excite the public. "I really believe the breakthrough here is in the ability to record and share. If you've done something and you want to make a sort of guide out of it, you don't have to go to a forum, you can just record it and show it," he said, alluding to its potential for a "challenging" game like Lords of the Fallen.

"And this is just one tiny detail out of many of these [new features]," he added. "This is probably the thing that defines this new generation of consoles more than the hardware itself."

Gop couldn't talk about the online features of Lords of the Fallen but said the team was looking at "some of the functionality that could be called online-ish". "It's definitely going to be primarily a single-player game," though.

Right now, the Lords of the Fallen team numbers around 40. There are 30 at Deck 13 in Germany, 10 at CI Games in Poland, but the team will grow now full production is under way.

I've heard good things. However, can't afford the time, have to spend my time getting basement ready for Destiny.

"Damn, you can't get black levels like that on your projector!"

Looks like a pretty cool game. There is definitely a fine line between a game that is just challenging enough for you to keep trying, and one that you give up on after a few days. Dark Souls was a little too frustrating for me personally.

watched all of it and I am even more stoked for this. Very torn between PS4 & PC, though I'll probably stick with console to avoid any potential game crashes that can happen with PC. But knowing now beautiful PC can look..soooo tough!

DEFINITELY looks like a Dark Souls clone for PS4. And that's not a bad things, nothing wrong with that at all.

Definitely will pick this up.

I played this for about 20 minutes last night. It is without a doubt a clone of the Souls games. To me the combat feels a little slower and he rolls in slow motion practically but maybe that is the character I chose or based on my stats. The graphics have nice lighting however it kind of has an overall blurriness to the image so far, might just be too much use of Depth of Field for my taste. The particle effects are nice. I'd be lying if I didn't say I expected better. The framerate seems 30fps and lower with some hiccups here and there. Interiors look better than exteriors. I have to spend some more time with it.

I didn't take a lot of screens yet.

Only cleared the first boss. Controls are going to take a bit to learn/adjust to. I constantly keep pressing square to attack, lol. Finding the warrior to be good defensively but weak in attack early on. Button mashing is clearly out the window on this one.

I do like that the game holds your hand for about 60 secs before letting you get straight into it.

Are you finding it to have kind of a blurry look? Almost as if it is slighly out of focus.

There is a little more tutorial after the first boss. Like a item that does magic attacks. They don't always explain things that well in the game.

I initially did the heavy armor guy but found I hated his slow roll, it is basically in slow motion. I started a medium armor guy and I'm enjoying him much more. If it is like Dark Souls it really only matters at the beginning because you'll eventually put your attributes to whatever you want anyways.

I made it to the 2nd boss last night, which isn't that much further than the first. I almost had him on my first try. It is a longer fight so I didn't try a second time.

yea the DOF is (was?) rather strong. There was an update installed and after that it seemed to have eased up a little bit and smooth out a few jaggys. I did watch that video you posted pre-launch and what I am seeing is nearly exact, so for this first part I have an idea of what to do/explore. Still trying to learn the backstab.

IGN review did say that once warrior reaches higher levels they basically can't be killed, so i'll stick it out for 1st playthru.

Ugh. I'm getting back into the swing of my PS4 gaming after taking the summer largely off. I thought my next time sink was going to be GTA V. Then I saw Dragon's Age Inquisition is coming out soon. And now I see THIS is out now.

Crap .....

And I just know ALL these are going on sale at the end next month ....

I think I have the patch installed, pretty sure I saw it when I fired up the game. That's the trade off I guess, I don't see jaggies or notice them from memory at least.

Got it for the PC. It's very much like Dark Souls and that's a really good thing. I didn't mind dying in Dark Souls 1 and 2, but honestly it got old after a while. With this game it punishes button mashing, but rewards patience and timing but it is nowhere near as unforgiving as Dark Souls. It is lots of fun so far. I beat the first two bosses and the loot is coming along nicely and the pacing of leveling is enough to always feel like you're getting a reward. It's very much worth a purchase if you like action RPGs. Given the choice (if you have a respectable PC), I'd probably go with PC as you may be able to crank out a better frame rate. But I've heard the PS4 version is no slouch, either, so you can't go wrong either way.

ran into my first game breaking bug yesterday. Fell into the bottomless pit in the catacombs and got stuck in the infinite loop of death respawning at the top of the stairs in the same room. Had to recover from a PS+ cloud backup, which was from friday and make up lost ground.

Be wary of the spot!

Still enjoying the game though.

This talks about what bothers me on the graphics. " "So what's going on? Well, Deck13 went a bit overboard with its implementation of chromatic aberration"" I hope they patch a way to disable it on console.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...allen-face-off

In what has become a bit of a standard announcement these days, the developers confirmed in September that Lords of the Fallen operates at 1080p on PlayStation 4 and 900p on Xbox One, and we can confirm that this is the case - not that the presentation is immediately obvious. In fact, first impressions actually suggest something below the suggested resolutions, with all the hallmarks of upscaling present on both consoles. The presentation is so murky, we actually had to fall back on good old-fashioned pixel-counting to absolutely confirm the resolution.
So what's going on? Well, Deck13 went a bit overboard with its implementation of chromatic aberration, to the point that the end results give the impression of a significantly lower resolution. We aren't huge fans of this type of filter, but it has its place - unfortunately, we can't help feel that an ancient monastery isn't the best venue for it. In Lords of the Fallen, the aberration is sometimes absurd to the point that it feels as if we were meant to don a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses.
Thankfully, the effect can be disabled on PC, but at the moment this requires users to disable post-processing effects across the board, eliminating other, more desirable effects in the process, including anti-aliasing. It's a shame the developers didn't provide an option to specifically disable chromatic aberration and leave the rest. Bearing in mind how much the game has changed via two patches since launch, hopefully they will consider adding this feature.
Moving on, the visual quality of the two console versions appears extremely similar, apart from a reduction in shadow quality and light glow on Xbox One. Shadow resolution is reduced significantly in comparison to the PS4 version, producing noticeable chunkiness in many scenes. As the game features an array of shadow-casting spot and box-lights, this difference leaves certain scenes looking decidedly inferior on Xbox One. The PC offers the best quality in this area - better-defined shadows and more of them. This manifests in the form of equipment shadows on character models: shields, pieces of cloth and more all present proper shadows on PC, while on console only the base character mesh minus accessories casts a shade.

Probably going to trade in Destiny at Best Buy (currently $50 TIV) and am thinking about picking this up (not all that interested in Call of Duty and Far Cry 4 is already paid for). From what I watched of Epyon play it definitely looked cool. Couldn't Shareplay as one of our connections didn't like the other.

Really wish I could power thru Watch_Dogs & Mordor for the TIV offer and snag something next week.

But yes, buy this game and be lost to it's addictiveness.

I have only played until past the 2nd boss. I am trying to hold off playing hoping they add a patch that lets us disable the Cromatic Aberration.

I wasn't expecting Big Brad to like it, didn't think he was a fan of Dark Souls and it is very similar. It does seem more accessible than the Dark Souls games so far. It isn't easy but it is easier than Dark Souls so far.

Dark Souls was overly difficult to the point of frustrating, this seems challenging but not as unforgiving.

As for Destiny, I'm bored to tears with that game. I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of it, but damn if it ended up being a snore fest after awhile. Playing the same stuff over and over only on a harder difficulty gets old real quick.

Definitely more forgiving so far. You could use a glitch in the first dark souls to level up like crazy, same sith demons souls.

Still bummed that Destiny is so lacking in varied locations.

Just finished my second character on this game. First was a warrior. There were a few challenges, but the trick is to get enough points into magic to get 3/3 rage, then pump your stats into strength (mostly) endurance and vitality (least) then just pop rage wielding a gigantic strength weapon and pretty much steamroll everything.

Second toon was a faith build with fire magic. Weapons were harder to find until I got the Stare weapon (amazing) socketed with a flawless luck rune. I like this build because you only have to put points into three stats: Magic, vitality and endurance. Once I got to 30 magic my quake spell would hit for almost 1k damage. The R2 attack with Stare does around 800 damage to light armor. I had a bit harder of a time until I got that weapon, but now it's faceroll (unfortunately, you get that weapon near the end of the game...).

Great game overall. Gonna try a rogue build next, but that is gonna be difficult.

Oh, and the armor sets for the Faith toon look way better, imho, than the warrior.

Just started this game. Having a hard time getting into it as the PS4 seems to struggle running it adequately. Is sub 30fps really next gen? It's quite jarring. Doesn't help with combat that's for sure. Don't get me started on chromatic aberration. Adds nothing at all to the visuals, but in fact has the opposite effect.

Hopefully that'll change the more I play it.

Edit: so after watching some videos of different character, it's obvious that what I've chosen doesn't match my play style (brawling, with warrior armor). Just too heavy. Think I'll go with cleric and rogue armor to see how that works out.

So even after playing with the new build, I've realized that I pretty much wasted my money on it. Can't for the life of me get past the first boss. Epyon made it look easy, but since I'm using light armor I'm don't in one hit and my roll is still too slow most of the time. Tried it with my warrior character and it was still a no go. I guess I'm horrible at these types of games.

Unfortunately, looks like I'm stuck with the game for the time being. Both Best Buy and GameStop said it can't be traded in at this time. They wouldn't give me a reason as to why, but they are accepting trades on Advanced Warfare. Go figure haha. In the future, I'll probably steer clear of any "Dark Souls-esque" type of games.

Thumbs down

It's okay Big Brad, I gave up too and sent my copy back. The bosses, combined with the mechanics and the fact that they were getting off four hits to my one almost made me throw my controller at the wall. I'm all for challenging games, but this one was ridiculous.

I act my age sometimes. Sometimes ;). Crap I say

I think you have to play medium or heavy armor guy (who's just a slow tank) from what I've read. The light armor guy does almost no damage when I fought the boss with him. Sucks because I liked how he doesn't feel so sluggish.
