With maxed hull and heavy shot you should be able to take out the NE, SE, and SW legendaries without too much trouble. Maxed ram and swivel are also nice. Just remember that heavy shot is a sideways shot without using L2 -- if you use L2 you'll do round shot instead, which is much weaker.

I approach from front or rear, chase cannon, ram, then follow up with heavy shot / swivel guns, and use mortars while preparing for another run. Maxed heavy shot does a world of hurt on them.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
In the NE battle, I've found that it works best to take out the white-sailed ship first. Not sure why.

The NW battle is another story entirely. That ship cheats like there's no tomorrow, turning on a dime and magically speeding up to ram you at will. I tried countless strategies with a fully maxed Jackdaw and never found one that worked. I ultimately did the "drift over the event boundary while not at the wheel" trick to board the ship and kill everyone instead.

Amusingly, beating the NW ship gives you its cheap, physics-defying ram charge move.

^ Thanks for that. Bottom line I'll wait until completely powered up before attempting. I figured there was a boss in there that didn't follow the game's rules, because there always is wink.gif . It will be less frustrating now, knowing that's how it's gonna play.

Actually, you get that for beating all four legendary ships. You just beat the ramming ship last. biggrin.gif

^ I'm one away from full heavy shot, one away from full mortar, and I think two away from armor. Thanks for the tips. I heard they were tough but it seems like they get to ignore the rules of the game, just like any good boss fight wink.gif . I'll be thinking about tackling one when I get all the upgrades done.

The SW legendary captain is practically psychic! He places his mortar shot in your path based on controller input, not actual ship direction. Makes it a challenge since you have to shoot his aft side while zig zagging past the mortars.

Warning: I make a lot of mistakes but occasionally I learn from them!
