Otherwise I think they should release it in the West alongside the PS4 launch (or as soon as possible) in order to maximally capitalize on the launch period excitement while STRONGLY marketing it as an PS4 Extender.

People were complaining about a $499/$599 PS3 back in 2006, before the economy crash. A $400 PS4, with $50 PS+ subscription required for online play, let's say one game at $60, and a $100 Vita TV. That's $610 with tax on top, during a period when consumers are also budgeting for xmas gifts. I'd be very surprised to see the Vita TV selling in decent numbers if launched in November.

I think you might be underestimating the motivation of a father to get their kid away from the primary flat panel...or better yet still be able to access your games when wifey is watching The Celebrity Apprentice. tongue.gif

Oh believe me, I'm in that boat. I'm just not overestimating how many people are prepared to spend in the $600 range to get the ps4/vita tv package during the christmas holidays.

So big news, Vita TV has a stand!?!

Heh, but the demo did look pretty good. No lag and seamless synching. Also swear I saw a DS4 synced to it, but it's been a long day so maybe not.

It's supposed to be able to be synced with a Dual Shock 4 or a SixAxis or DS3 from the PS3. So you probably did see it. That would be one vertical stand I'd actually take advantage of. Discs spinning at high RPM's always discouraged me from using it on consoles with optical drives.

Another demo station showcased how the PS Vita TV could stream PS4 games using Remote Play, although the hardware didn't exactly shine during that session. It works, which is perhaps miraculous in itself; and with surprisingly little latency, too — I was able to play through a brief snippet of Knack without taking too many hits due to lag. Visually, though, there's some serious degradation experienced while streaming; resolution takes a nosedive and textures get pretty muddy.

Boooo.

Not really.

But the other question is what setup he was playing on. If he was playing right in front of one of those 60-80 inch floor TV's showing off games and features, well sure it's going to look like crap.

I don't think the Vita is really supposed to be a centerpiece if the home theater / living room TV. What I want to know is if it's serviceable on a bedroom 37". Youtube or Netflix HD quality is more than enough if they can hit it.

Not really surprised, just confirming what I'd feared.

I wonder what the bottleneck is...the encoder on the PS4, the decoder on the Vita, or simply not choosing a high enough bitrate.

It's certainly something that will improve over time, I just wish they were starting from a better place.

Thankfully the functions that interest me appear to be fine. Streaming PS4 content to another tv was of no interest to me.

I know it's not region locked, but i wonder if the streaming services are or regionalized.

It be nice if it runs off of PSN sign in region.

With PS Vita TV due out on November 14 in Japan, Sony has released a four-minute introduction video highlighting the 9,480 yen system’s various capabilities.

Here’s the run-down:
  • You can play PS Vita games on your TV.
  • You can use the same save data across PS Vita TV and PS Vita to take your games on the go and back.
  • If your friends are over, you can play ad-hoc multiplayer while three friends are on their PS Vitas and you’re on PS Vita TV.
  • There are many supported video services like Tsutaya TV, Nico Nico, Hulu, TV Dogatch, and more.
  • There are various supported entertainment services like Music Unlimited, Reader, Joysound.TV Plus, Radiko.jp, Twitter, internet browser, and Nasne.
  • If your PlayStation 4 is in one room, you can play it in another room via PS Vita TV remote play.

It would be nice if you could use the PS3 for PS4 remote play in another room.

Seriously. The Vita can do it but a PS3 can't?

I know, but it's not going to happen as long as the PS3 has 512MB of split RAM.

As we know the PS Vita TV got shown at E3 and it will be called Playstation TV instead. In the official video, you can see that the comments and ratings are disabled.

I guess Sony knew that a lot of people would comment about the new name change of the Vita TV as well as people using that comment section to say how bad Sony's marketing of the PS Vita was at E3.

Vita got a lot more attention than I thought it would, so I doubt many are very upset.

I hope they clear licensing issues to get more of the PSP compatible library out on this and get as many Vita releases patched for Vita TV support as possible. They haven't done so well in getting Vita games running on it in Japan. Less than 20% of the library is compatible as I recall. Many obviously can't easily be made compatible, but I doubt that less than 20% is the best that they can do.

I hope they don't focus so much on streaming that they forget about what it can actually natively play since that's where my own interest lies. Retiring my PSP Go and external scaler for PSP downloads and enjoying the odd Vita game or two on my tv is why I've been hoping for this announcement.

It looks like we do have DS4 support for the PS TV. It was snuck in with the Vita 3.10 update back in March.

If you use the Playstation TV for PS4 remote play, I'm pretty sure you're limited to 720p. Which kinda defeats the purpose. I mean, it's better than nothing of course, but if I'm playing my PS4, I want to experience the full 1080p.

Still, I'd be very interested in getting one of these things when they get the price down to like $69.99. Or $99 including a DS4. At that point I'd be interested. Although, you know what.... One of these things would come in real handy when you're at like a hotel or something. Super small, and you play Vita games on your hotel TV. Would be pretty cool.

It's app support could make me interested in it sooner than later. For instance, if I'm in the market for a media streaming device, and Playstation TV carries everything I want, I'd be willing to shell out a few bucks more to have the PS gaming option over what, say, Amazon TV offers.

And you're also limited to 30fps. And a really low bitrate. It's acceptable on a vita, but it's going to look like ass on a TV.

I didn't expect a big showing eighter. Heck, the best I was expecting was for them to release the 64GB cards to the US and lower the prices of the other cards and even that didn't happen. Still, if you read a lot of the comments on Reddit, NeoGaf and the Playstation blogs, you'd see that tons of people are upset over Sony's handling of the PS Vita especially in the US. Matters have gotten worse when it was mentioned on the Playstation blog that Final Fantasy Type 0 HD was coming to the PS Vita and then later, it was proven to be a mistake and that they meant to say PS4.

What is the deal with the PS TV and the old controller? Are you not able to use the PS4 controller with it? The bundle I see on Amazon has an old PS3 controller with it.

Yeah, but you could use it in a kids room. They likely have a 720p TV in their room anyways. Of course, don't feel like spending a cool $99 for each of the kids rooms. That crap adds up. Get the price down to $69.99 and we're in bidness.

Agreed. I hope that Amazon Prime Instant Video is supported, but I will be sorta surprised if it is. Why arm a competitor?

Considering it's popularity and fact it is on PS3/PS4 it'd seem like a bad idea not to. Potential buyers will expect to have access to the same media apps they already have, so hopefully Sony doesn't fubar and has the app available.

Better to sell units than to count on VOD one-time sales.

A really bad idea for Sony not to allow the inclusion of the app, true...but is it a good idea for Amazon to allow it? That's a more nuanced question. The Vita doesn't currently have Amazon VOD support. It is on the PS3/PS4, but neither console really competes with any Amazon hardware. The Playstation TV will directly compete with the Amazon Fire TV (especially considering the gaming capabilities of the Fire TV).

Plus Amazon has already demonstrated their willingness to withhold Amazon VOD capability from Android Tablets and smartphones (which would represent a much larger revenue source than the Playstation TV).

I hope I'm wrong...but I don't think I will be.
