I want to buy a PS3 but I might have to run the sound through an optical out connection as opposed to HDMI ... I already have a blu-ray player so I don't care about movies--I just care about surround sound quality with gaming.

If I run the audio for PS3 games through a toslink cable instead of HDMI am I losing any audio quality?

Opinions please!

No real difference. Bitstreaming DD/DTS from the PS3 is slightly louder than PCM over HDMI but the quality is the same for most games.
Note that the games that utilize LPCM 7.1 will default to lossy 5.1 over optical.

Thanks, bradman. I'm thinking of getting a new receiver without 3D passthrough and hooking up the ps3 directly to my display for 3D gaming, which is why I ask ... I'm assuming there are no games that are Dolby Digital HD or DTS HD?

Correct, the vast majority of games are DD or DTS 5.1.

A quick search on Amazon can yield receivers w/3D passthrough for as low as $200. http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-1513-Channel-Through-Receiver/dp/B007R8U5VM

I have to have front channel pre outs (front left, right and center) to use my three amplifiers. You can find older affordable receivers with pre-outs, and newer affordable receivers with 3D passthrough, but generally not both ...

The vast majority of PS3 games run in uncompressed PCM, which is functionally identical to DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD.

So yes, you are unquestionably losing some sound quality by running over optical.
