Hello guys sorry in advance for the long post,
I currently have a Samsung 40" LED TV: UA40D5500RR
A Samsung DVD home theatre: htf-455k
A slim PS3
An apple TV 3rd Gen
1) I am connecting all the devices to the TV using HDMI cables.
2) I have an optical out cable from the TV to the home theatre to get audio from PS3/Apple TV/Regular TV to the Audio Receiver. My TV does not allow for Audio Return Channel.
3) I have set my Audio output settings on the PS3 to: HDMI, enabling the PCM 2.1 channels, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby 5.1.
4) BD/DVD Audio settings on the ps3 are set to PCM linear NOT Bitstream (I get no sound on Bitstream).
Now, I do not get any surround from my speakers unless through virtual surround, which is not true surround sound. Every time I check the Audio setting on the TV while playing a game/Blu Ray it's always PCM and not Dolby Digital (The Dolby Digital option is grayed out). Anyway I could actually get this to work?
This is why you're not getting surround sound. The TV won't pass through surround sound codecs. You'll have to hook up optical/hdmi outs from each of your devices to your receiver to get surround sound.
