Hello Everyone, I've been a long time follower and reader of AVS but just now decided to put in my 2 cents since I'm also having a similar issue with the PS4.
First of all, My equipment is PS4, Onkyo TX-NR609 7.1 setup and Sony KDL-55HX800 ALL on HDMI (aftermarket)
PS4 settings and results on Main Interface (XMB): Main Audio Linear PCM= No Center speaker and Low volume (tones while going through options) on Front L & R speakers, Onkyo shows "Direct" and PCM in small letters
Main Audio Bitstream Dolby= Center speaker has normal volume (tones) as well as FR & FL, Onkyo Shows Dolby Digital EX
Main Audio Bitstream DTS= Center speaker has normal volume (tones) as well as FR & FL, Onkyo Shows DTS
PS4 settings and results on Shadow of Mordor: Main Audio Linear PCM= No center speaker in dialog or cut scenes only FR and FL speakers Onkyo shows "Direct" (didn't get to "play" since the audio wasn't working)
Main Audio Bitstream Dolby= Center speaker has normal volume as well as all speakers , Onkyo Shows Dolby Digital EX (audio sounds good during game play all speakers)
Main Audio Bitstream DTS= Center speaker has normal volume as well as all speakers , Onkyo Shows DTS (audio sounds good during game play all speakers)
In all 3 settings the display that shows the speakers that are working on the Onkyo shows all 7 speakers are active even if there is no sound from center speaker.
I also tried Call of Duty: Advance Warfare with the exact same results.
I tried the setting the Optical as output (no actual cable) and Onkyo shows the mentioned Dolby Pro Logic II.
Now... Is the Dolby Pro Logic II (or fake surround) better than the Bitstream Dolby & DTS settings? (Doesn't sound like it should be...)
No Problems while on Blu-Ray using Bitstream on Blu-Ray menu and it shows correct audio on Onkyo.
Questions are welcome as well as help with my question.
Please pardon the repetitiveness but I wanted to be as specific as possible to avoid confusion.
PS: Shadow of Mordor shows on the back of the case that it supports DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital, Call Of Duty:AW shows it supports Dolby Digital
I'm guessing the best setting will depend on what format the game supports given a malfunctioning Linear PCM setting.

Is it possible that your receiver has independent channel balance for each mode?

Its possible, however coming from 2 Onkyo receivers and plenty of devices I have never had to mess with any of those specific settings. The way I see it, if the PS4 is in fact working properly it should just work. Right?

Well, that's assuming your receiver is set up correctly. On my denon "direct" bypasses all processing, including channel balance. I would think that if it shows DTS and DD on the hud for the other modes, that it would show PCM on the HUD in PCM mode.

Right, I know I wrote a lot so its easy to miss but I did say that it shows PCM in small letters on the receiver's display.
I guess its possible that the receiver works perfectly on every other mode but this one, I did try to change the listening modes while on direct and there were some options but it was basically stereo or mono versions of the same.
Is anybody aware of any setting on the Onkyos that will allow Linear PCM to work correctly?

well add me to the club. i have a pioneer vsx-820 and cannot get center channel output in games. i've tried with hdmi and optical, to no avail. blurays will play just fine with center channel on dolby HD or DTS hd. I can force hdmi or optical to DD or DTS and 4 speakers work except for center channel. made sure my amp is set to only output data to amp only, which it does. really annoying that this hasn't been fixed to work with all amps for over 1 year.

Still no luck here, either. I'm constantly switching back and forth from PCM for movies, to Optical Out for games (and using ProLogic) to get center channel.

For movies, I set "primary output port" to HDMI and "audio format" to Linear PCM in the PS4 sound options. Once the disc starts, I hit triangle (I think that's the button) to bring up settings, and then I make sure it says bitstream direct. Audio plays as expected and things work great.

For games, the settings above work but there is no center audio. What I do is, go into sound options in PS4 and set primary output port to optical (even though I don't have an optical cable connected). I'll check on audio format, but I think I leave it on PCM. Now, I can select ProLogicII on my receiver for "fake" surround sound.

Set up a new PS4 last night and no center channel sound on the system music at the nav. screen. 4-year old Denon. This morning switched out to the Sony HDMI cable that came with it and have center channel now. Who knew? Not sure what happened, but I did unplug the PS4 to switch out the cables. Just an FYI.

I double-checked my settings for games, here they are:

Once I do this, my AVR plays 2-channel stereo, but then I can change it to ProLogicII (and a few other fake surround modes). I still think there is something wrong with the way PS4 handles game audio on certain setups. Why would the center channel produce sound for movies, but not for games?

Another thing I don't get is that I set it to the optical port and it works, but there is no optical cable connected.

Maybe I missed something but... Is the Pro Logic II that comes from the optical option (no actual cable) better than forcing the Dolby or DTS Bitstream??

In my case, I think so because if I force Dolby, there's no center audio. My AVR will say Dolby D, but no sound comes out of the center. Dolby works fine for movies, though.

Okay, again, new PS4, and we've tried two games so far. LBP3 has no center channel audio, but Lego Batman 3 does have it. This with no changes to anything between switching games. So is it a developer issue?

I had originally used the HDMI cable that came with the PS4 and I eventually started to have issues. Once I replaced the PS4 cable with a Monoprice HDMI cable my issues went away. I trashed the PS4 HDMI cable.

True, but this is a problem with pretty much all games I've played. Also, there is no center sound fx on the main PS4 menu. Things worked fine on PS3, but suddenly not on PS4? I blame the system.

Little Big Planet 3 has no sound coming out of the center channel for me.

Shadow of Mordor is OK; Last of Us Remastered is OK; Lego Marvel is OK - that's all that I can remember for now.

My wife started playing AC Unity today, so I'll ask her if she noticed anything.

Oh, and my AVR is a Yamaha 773.

Yippee-ki-yay...
