Denial of Service attacks on Sony and Blizzard's gaming servers

While not a hack, DDoS attacks still cause issues in making it hard for gamers to connect while the issue is being solved. Here's what's been going on if you can't stay signed in:

Quote:
Several gaming servers have been at the receiving end of DDoS attacks over the past several hours. Blizzard's Battle.net servers, Riot's League of Legends, Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile, and PlayStation Network are among those under attack by a group of hackers calling themselves Lizard Squad.

Several tweets have gone up throughout Saturday evening, in which Lizard Squad has taken responsibility for the attacks. The group started with Blizzard's servers that include Hearthstone, Diablo 3, World of Warcraft and others. The group quickly spread to League of Legends and Path of Exile before deciding to spread their terror to PlayStation Network. The latter's outage is not related to the scheduled maintenance set to begin Monday morning.

The situation is ongoing, as the various staffs work hard to get the servers active again.

Hopefully my digital version of Diablo works when I get home tonight. Having company over last night meant I couldn't continue on my quest to combat evil, thus confirming my addiction.

I've had no Diablo 3 issues. It allows offline play unlike the PC version.

It dropped me out of psn when I was playing NHL online and winning 3-0 in the 3rd.

Administered the loss, ending a 14 game win streak

Saturday watching Amazon on PS3, got booted once. Signed in 5 min later and didn't notice again. Sunday afternoon I played a little GT6 (online events) and didn't notice a problem. Monday morning I woke my PS4 and it downloaded an update for Watch Dogs, and my digital preorder preload for Infamous First Light, all of which ran as they should. On Sat friend on the east coast tried GTAV online and could not find any other players in any mode, yet he could still play online solo.

I'm lucky that I wasn't really affected, fingers crossed for you though if you're having problems.

It is a subtle distinction but this isn't "hacking". It's a DDoS attack, but nothing so far indicates that there have been any intrusions or any data compromised.

That said, this continues to be an issue hitting multiple services and it doesn't seem like it is going to be stopped any time soon. Mitigating systems are obviously activated now but when the attacker(s) shift their attack profiles the services can be affected until the systems are updated to protect against the attacks.

I really hope they find and arrest the offending party or parties soon.

Yeah it's not hacking per se, but the attackers typically like to think of themselves as hackers. In reality, they're just hacks that don't have a life.

A hack is when they break in to the company's system and start screwing around. A DDoS attack is simply some clown using a bunch of remote computers to clog up the limted internet access paths to the gaming servers, standing in the way of legit gamers trying to get in.

This is nowhere near the problem of a hack (potential breach of sensitive info), though it can be annoying. Sony's lastest posting suggests that today's episode is minor compared to the other day. Most people should not be experincing problems.
