Until Dawn, a PS4 exclusive from Supermassive Games, out August 2015

Supermassive has previously made some Move games, as well as LittleBigPlanet for the Vita, but it looks like they're trying something very different for their next release:

Until Dawn jumped from character to character at pre-determined moments in the story, which allowed me to control one at a time. The game threw at me decision after decision to make as that character, some of which were more crucial than others. Their intensity ranged from choices like "Do I let my friend look through the telescope and see his girlfriend getting cozy with her ex?" to "Do I chase after the killer by jumping down this steep slope or climb down the safer, slower route?" Some of these were the tipping point between the life or death of a character.

The first character death I encountered came as something of a shock, because up until that point I had been convinced that my careful approach to risky situations had been the best thing to do. As I confronted the corpse of my dead friend the game was quick to allude to where I had gone wrong, showing brief flashbacks of where I had decided to take the more secure, but slower path in chasing the killer. Perhaps if I had taken the faster, riskier route, that friend would still be alive. It is supposedly possible to complete the game with everyone alive, or have all eight characters end up dead. The game's auto-save system ensures that players cannot simply go back and load a previous save to undo a crucial choice, adding to the pressure of making a decision which leads to a desirable outcome.

My decision-making was not limited solely to controlling the actions of the characters. At chosen intervals in the game I was whisked away to a therapy session with a psychiatrist which seemed to take place separately from where the game's horror story unfolded. Here, I was quizzed on what made me uneasy, or what triggered my fear. A later session asked me to choose which characters I disliked the most, and asked me to identify whether I feared men or women more. In addition to breaking the fourth wall, these quizzes supposedly serve to alter the course of the game according to what I identified as something which scared me more. While I didn't directly encounter any of my named fears (zombies and roaches), I am curious to see whether these selections materialise in some form later on in the game.

From Neogaf's review thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1101276

Looks like this game is getting some positive reactions and is being talked about as a sleeper hit! This is why I'm more in tune with the Playstation brand as there is a higher propensity for games of this nature. I love these types of games. It's a nice departure from a typical shooter. I hope Gamefly mails it out today.

If this game was not 74 dollars in canada i would be all over it, going to have to wait to find used copies or a price reduction around xmas hopefully.

It looks like a blast to play even with other people a few reviews also commented on this, but as one review suggested its an expensive one off with about 8-9 hours of gameplay, some people have already passed it. I understand you can replay it, but with the massive amount of games about to be released (it is almost depressing between time and money how many games are going to be released from september to november), i will be looking to play other games not replay games.

I am of the same mindset on the price. $74 is too much for me. Heck i am having a hard time paying $49.99 plus tax for the Gears of War remaster.

Are all new games a standard $74?

Unfortunately given the state of our dollar and our governments focus on the campaign trail to keep a balanced budget above all else, we are looking at 79.99 price tag for games as we head to recession.

I paid those prices as a child for Nintendo 64 games, now depressingly were back to that. I envy american gamers right now.

So is it taxes then? Or higher retailer cost due to currency manipulation? Either way, "free healthcare"?

Picked it tonight after my son pushed me enough to get it. To be fair I had been wanting to get it too, but was going to hold off on it since there is just to much coming out and needed something else down the road when it went cheaper. What sold me is the various ending and having a horror game to play again. May have come across a glitch though. I am at a part in the game where it is fairly early and I am at a shooting range and I need to fire the rifle with R2. I got to push R2 and nothing happens. Twice I have done this and each time it times out and I have to restart the aiming sequence. Has anyone else have this problem? What is funny is depending on some choices you may or many not get to this point! Oh the fun this will be trying to help people since the game does not always play the same way twice!

EDIT: Never mind I figured it out. There are indicators on which object you should aim for. Apparently i was over thinking it and trying to shoot whichever one I wanted.

Yeah supposedly higher costs due to the plummeting of the dollar that has reached new lows in a decade, american companies like sony have raised prices including the cost of a ps4 to recoup the poor value of our dollar. From the little research i have done anyway.

If I go to a best buy store in the city a new game (like Until Dawn) will cost me $74.99 + tax (15%) = $86.24
I refuse to pay that so new releases for me are out for the foreseeable future.

I'm in the same boat. Maybe with the exception of Star Wars: Battlefront, I'll be waiting for price drops on pretty much everything else. I haven't played online multiplayer regularly since BFBC2, but Battlefront looks like a lot of fun and I would want to start on an even footing with everyone else.

I've paid more for limited editions (sometimes a lot more), but I just can't bring myself to pay $80 plus tax for the basic version of a game -- not when I have a backlog that could probably last me the rest of my life. I've actually been going through my download list on my PS3 and am about to start on Dragon's Dogma and Binary Domain (not sure if they were PS+ freebies or whether I bought them on sale). I've heard some good things about these two games.

Great game so far and it definitely came out of nowhere for me. Decided to grab it when picking up Gear of War. An hour in and I'm hooked. Something I needed for a change a pace game instead of all the shooters and RPG's. There will probably be a quick price drop on this game, so I'm sure it will be $40 in the next 3-4 weeks if you can wait that long. Best Buy US nets me $51 after tax with my gamers club. Good to be in the US over you poor Canadians

My redbox now has PS4 games and has this so I will give it a rent. If figure if I hate it like those Quantum Dream QTE titles (Heavy Rain and whatever that other demo I played is called) it is only a $3 loss.

Every time I hit the couple of redbox machines that aren't out of my way the games are already out, at least the ones I want to try.

I've started using the Live from PlayStation and at least watching some gameplay when I want to know what a game is doing. The trick is finding a broadcast without someone's personal life commentary, annoying music or a party going on in the background :/ I watched someone play Until dawn for about a half hour last night, very cinematic style and lots of bits to collect. There wasn't any action in the bit so not sure what combat is in this game, or if there's any QTE's. I bet there's a few anyways.

Yeah, I had a few minutes to watch a stream and I did not see any QTE's, only that you get to make choices which I like. If there is actual gameplay and not QTE's that will be much more appealing to me. Or if it is story driven like Grim Fandango and just making choices that could be fun as a choose your own adventure.

One QTE at the introduction and maybe one other that I remember a little later. @freemeat it is very much about making choices aka choosing your own adventure. Your choices matter a lot in the game and are tracked via the butterfly effect. I do not see how someone could play the game twice with how many choices you have to make without writing them all down (way to much work). I am not sure if this game could get old or not, but it would be interesting to see if DLC comes out down the road and where it goes if it does.

I always reserve online or through the Redbox app. I can't tell you the last time I went to a kiosk "blind" other than to return a disc.

I'll be giving Until Dawn a rent this weekend. Looking forward to something a bit different.

If this is like Heavy Rain, I think I will pick it up. Really enjoyed Heavy Rain and the concept of your choices affect the outcome.

I ended up playing this until Chapter 3 which is basically enough to introduce characters and the game mechanics. So far it is very enjoyable as a interactive choose your own adventure. The gf and I already plan on trying different choices to see what would change in the story.

How many times have you jumped during the game? I was playing this morning and my 15yo son was watching. I was working on getting Mike and Jessica to the cabin and there was one part where he and I both jumped pretty bad shortly after Jessica got lost. He about crapped his pants and my daughter was asking me to turn it off since she did not like all the sounds coming from the game when she was playing on the laptop.

Haha! I think maybe two times, maybe three. A couple of funny cheap scares for sure and I have barely played much.

This game is pretty great. Yes all the open-world side quest type gamers will complain, but if you dig scripted games with atmosphere this is solid and unique. It'll get compared to a tell-tale game or heavy rain, but it's also a bit different. It's also an easy game to play with your spouse as you can make choices together.

Sony has made a mistake with the lack of marketing with this. I understand why they didn't wait till Halloween given other releases but they've under marketed and/or under manufactured. It was sold out in my city (target, bestbuy and GameStop), luckily I visited my parents and was able to pick it up near them.

For a lot of hoopla around Sony not having any exclusives, I've been able to play two fantastic exclusive games this year that I wasn't even super excited about until release. This and bloodborne.

I'm digging it very much. I have about two chapters left and have managed to keep everyone alive so far. It's different and more involving than Heavy Rain ever was for me, likely due to the voice acting. The facial animations and expressions are excellent in some parts, but other it just doesn't look right at all. The music and sound pretty much make the game though. It's pretty much inline with every horror movie, complete with jump scares and crazy amounts of bass that hits down in the low 20's. Very nice.

To be honest, I'm getting burnt out on open world games, so this is a nice change of pace. I did rent it and am going to wait on a sale as I'm not sure it's worth $60/$48 for me at this point.

Totally agree with you on this. I was going to pass on this title since I still have a list of games to buy and figured I would pick this up on the cheap next year. My son on the other hand talked me into it and we have had fun making decisions or arguing over the decisions we have made on our separate games as we watch each other play. I am slightly ahead of him, but not to far into the game yet. Loving how it plays and how they did it. Easily the sleeper hit of the year and second best exclusive after Bloodborne.

Can't believe it will be on sale next week at Best Buy for $40. That was a really fast price drop.
