Nier: Automata

Nier: Automata is the latest RPG from Square Enix and genius/mad game directo Yoko Taro.

Director Taro used to work for a company known as Cavia, who made games like Drakengard and the original Nier for the PS3 with Square-Enix publishing them.

They were known for having interesting, if extremely weird and sometimes hyper sexual or hyper violent stories. However they were almost always criticized by the quality of the gameplay. It was either hit or miss depending on your pet peeves with action type games. Since then however, Cavia has gone out of business and much of their development staff was absorbed into SquEnix proper as well as Director Yoko Taro.

Well, this time, for the Nier sequel, Square Enix hired veteran action game developers Platinum Games to design the combat for Nier and handle the bulk of game development and once again under the direction of Yoko Taro, and this time very few people are criticizing the quality of the action gameplay. In fact, its metacritic is through the roof, being eaqual to the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn!

Currently sitting pretty at a 90

Has anyone picked this up yet? I plan to soon but I also just got Horizon and am trying to beat Shadows of Mordor before the sequel drops and other games coming up. I will fit Nier in there somewhere because Yoko Taro + Platinum Games should equal gaming masterpiece.

I'm really curious about this game, although I probably won't get it anytime soon because of H:ZD. The game play, though, looks very good to me.

I'd love to hear more AVS'ers impressions on the game.

There's a demo in the PS Store for this. Played through it yesterday, and it's pretty good.

Horizon is sucking my time, and Mass Effect is coming soon, so I'll probably put Nier on my price-drop list.

I enjoyed the gameplay in the demo. The problem was the enemy variety even in the demo is so limited it that I found myself getting bored. Plus it feels like you are some ultra high powered character fighting against brain dead trash can styled robots. The visuals are pretty bland and last gen looking as well but it runs very smoothly (on Pro at least). The main character feels great to play!
