I was curious as the more and more I hear about the PSP, the more it sounds like a portable PS2 with additional features. Not like there is anything wrong with that, I just hear a lot of people expecting more from the PSP.
I am personally looking forward to the PSP as:
a) I don't own a PS2 (indefinately borrowing one from my little brother);
b) I travel a bit for work, so this will be a time killer for the airport, plane and hotel room (when I have downtime).
So anyone else planning on buying?
ps - Please don't turn this into a "DS roolz, PSP sucks" thread! No fanbois need apply!
--- I plan to have one along with a couple games on the US release date .
--- Now if we could just get an official date from Sony ... everybody seems to think March but with no confirmation I am not sure about putting down my $50 reserve .
It looks like a great piece of hardware, but it's just a paperweight unless it has some software. Does anybody know what games it's going to have for the US release? Hopefully they have SOCOM and Grand Theft Auto...
I'm waiting at least a year before I will even consider getting one. Too many problems with past Sony hardware for me to jump in on the first generation stuff. After a year all the kinks should be worked out, decent games will be available, and it will be cheaper.
Have they actually posted what the price will be in North America? I saw on the news last night (Funny first time I watched the news in months), that they haven't determined what they will charge for the PSP in NA. All they stated was whatever the price it will be considered reasonable for such a great piece of hardware.
To me, that sounds like when your buying a lobster @ a restaurant, and it doesn't list the price on the menu. TOO EXPENSIVE for what you get!
I have one right now and it's a wonderful piece of hardware. No official launch date for NA yet but Sony did say sometime in March at CES. about the price, most people think it will be between 185-200. Some people think 150, and while that would be great, it's far fetched. GTA is most likely a near-launch title. EA launch titles include NBA and NFL street, NFS underground, and TW golf. Ridge Racers is a launch title and it rocks. hot Shots Golf and Brotherhood of the blade (a hack and slash RPG) are launching from SCEA. Mercury is a launch title that looks like it will turn heads, and many are hoping Lumines gets announced for US launch.
Why would I want to pay two hundred bucks for something "slighty less powerful" than a ps2? Portibility? I play games too much when I'm home, I dont need to waste more time with them. Thats my version of a long winded 'no, I dont intend to get one.'
I'll buy one the moment the one with the transparent buttons (as seen at E3 last year) is released. The all black one looks nice but I'm sure it's a fingerprint collector.
if this GTA that's been in development turns out to be an effeciently and fairly moderated Multiplayer title....then it would be difficult for me to not get one eventually.
for now, we'll have to wait and see where the apps are at.
I've already got one and I've already put $20 down for another one. I never preorder anything either but this I had to make sure I could get easily at launch. It's really for my g/f who has been addicted to it. My PSP gets minimum 3 hours of usage per day and usually more so I'm using the hell out of it.
It really has become a device that I take with me everywhere and can't deal without. I have about an hour of commute each way to and from work which is where a lot of usage comes from. I also use it during work as well. When I get home, I either play games on it or my g/f does who is completely addicted to Lumines. I can't recall the last time she was ever this addicted to a game.
Simply saying it's a slightly less powerful portable PS2 isn't doing the system justice. I hate it when companies use catch phrases and terms, but Sony really has created in my eyes the "Walkman of the 21st Century". The fact that it plays games, movies, music and photos is huge plus for it. It's not just a game system. It is in a way a portable modded Xbox with Xbox Media Center installed. Because I have a fairly long commute, thankfully I don't have to drive it, I watch TV shows and movies on it during the commute. I recently picked up the first seven seasons of Stargate SG-1 which I have never seen before and only decided to cuz Fry's had an amazing sale on it. So lately I've been watching a lot of Stargate on it and it looks great. Just the other day I had a short wait and instead of reaching in my bag to pull out my iPod, I just switched it to mp3 mode and listened to some music while I was waiting. Not enough time to watch a show, but the music was nice to tide me over and I already had the headphones in my ears. On top of that, I've actually played around more with the photo mode and have used it to read comic books which I never even considered till my friend mentioned it to me. The control interface is designed so well that it makes using it as a digital comic book reader really easy to use.
So you see, being on the road, I don't just use it as a portable game system. I use it as a portable entertainment device that lets me entertain myself in whatever mood I'm in. I don't always want to play games, and its nice to have something all in one device that works so well and its only a fraction of the cost of other media players which other than storage capacity, fall way short in capability and screen. Not tomention that this is all out of the box functionality too. I can only imagine when Sony starts releasing firmware/software upgrades to the PSP. If even half the stuff that was listed on their leaked test firmware is true it will be even a more amazing system than it already is. As a game system, sure it may just be a slightly less powerful PS2 that offers nothing revolutionary, but as a whole, it's a world of a difference in what it is and can do.
Im not that attracted to the media playing angle of psp, we'll see...
What does seem exciting is the wireless networking angle(s). Multiplayer with family members or maybe even a lan-party type of get together with friends.
How about psp as wireless controller for ps3? Using the psp screen as an alternate data screen (maps/stats). Sort of like DS uses its second screen (which is blocked my thumb using the touchscreen, DOH!!!).
Even if only half of what you say is true, the PSP is going to be a complete home run. I think it will put Nintendo out of the hardware business for good.
The only thing I don't like about it is the name. To me, PSP stands for Possession of Stolen Property. What is it supposed to stand for?

that's what I thought until I watched my first episode of Family Guy on the PSP's screen. Even encoding at QB4 (a form of compression in Sony's 3GP software) the sharpness and color reproduction were top notch. Now I have a couple of episodes of Aqua teen hunger force and Scrubs on there for when I'm bored at work. Music playback is solid, and while it's not as full featured at something like an IPOD, it does the job nicely. Recently I took the PSP to work and didn't even take a game, I simply listened to some Coldplay and watched a full episode of scrubs on my down time. Another thing that's rarely mentioned, but has made all the difference to me is the audio. Since it's the first disc based handheld, the audio in the games is nothing short of awesome. I listen to Mario 64 on my DS and I hear Mario yell "yahoo!!" and it sounds like he's communicating to me through a tin can underwater. The leap from the beeps and boops of the cartridge based games to the fullness of bass and crisp vocals of Lumines needs to be taken into consideration because it's just one more thing that engulfs you into the gaming experience. I would talk about the screen size and how it fills the peripheral vision so well that it only heightens the experience but I would need all night, and the DS fanboys might want me to keep that on the hush

--- I Will be getting this unit the moment it hits the US retail chain .

Well, here's how it works. You gotta go to Sony JP's website and download the 3GP software. You download DVD decrypter as well. take the VOB files that decrypter makes and drag and drop into the 3GP. Once it's done, plug the PSP to the PC through USB, and place the file into your memory stick. Chances are, Sony will include the software in the NA version.

Was until I saw the real screenshots in the playstation magazine it looks like the other ones where fake it has the graphics of the ps1.
I had to read this sentence backwards to understand what you were saying. the PSP has far passed the PS1 graphics. Ridge Racers looks better than a dreamcast title. EA developers stated in an interview that the PSP is capable of producing 2nd and 3rd generation PS2 graphics.

I'm just curious, how does playing a game on a 4.5 inch screen become "engulfing"?
Don't get me wrong, the PSP is a slick device. The screen and sound are fantastic. I just don't quite understand how playing ANY portable game would be an immersive experience, be it on the PSP, DS, GBA, etc.

Well, because you won't see my POV anyway, I'll give you the simple answer. When looking at the PSP's screen from a reasonable distance it fills enough of your peripheral vision to block out any distractions. Unless you've played both, which I have, you won't know what I'm talking about.
