The PSP Value Pack will go on sale on March 24th and have a suggested retail price of $249.99 ($299.99 in Canada) and include a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with a remote control, a battery pack, and a movie/music/video game sample UMD. They’re also tossing in a special UMD-version of the film Spider-Man 2 with the first one million PSP Value Packs sold.

Thank the Lord I put my $20 down at EB games. I can't wait to see Spiderman 2 on a PSP!!! :D :D :D

Wow, that's significantly higher than it sells for in Japan, and a full $100 more than the DS is here in the US. I guess Sony must feel confident in their ability to move units at that price point.

ehhh.. too expensive. DS is $100 less, and while the PSP might be a little better, its not $100 worth of better-ness, to me at least. If it were $199 I might think about getting it.

As for watching movies, are they even going to look that good on this thing? Isnt the resolution a little low?

Remember... this is the "Value Pack". From what I am hearing is that after this initial 1 mil "Value Pack" units, they will be selling the stand alone PSP for ~$200.

I see this as Sony trying to capitalize on the hype of the PSP and the people who are willing to sink $250 to get the unit with all the additional stuff.

anybody know if you can stick a usb thumb drive into this thing and use it as your memory card/media storage/whatever? because that'd be EXTREMELY handy.

i just wish even one of them launch games appealed to me, or didnt have a duplicate available on a console.

From everything I have read, Sony is concentrating on selling the value pack in the US. They may eventually bring out the scaled down PSP only pack, but right now selling the value pack seems like it will help with the initial loss of the system. The value pack is definitely the way to go anyway since you'll probably want to get most of the accessories anyway(especially memory card and protective case). Does the value pack come with one battery or is it 2? It seems like the pack just comes with one, but I'm not sure.

Including the Spiderman UMD is a good idea to help boost sales. I don't have that much interest in it since I already own it on DVD, but definitely a nice perk for early adopters.

Maybe they are trying to make sure wireless multiplayer works for GT4 for the PSP before they release it.

Of course not, it's Sony. I've played Need for Speed on the Japanese PSP, we have a few floating in our company. It's STUNNING.

But it has firewire and memory stick. Sony owned technology... It'd be nice if you could view memory stick for pix and avi/mpg's, but we didn't find any apps on it to enable that.

We couldn't see any obvious way to get the WiFi to work and even do a simple browser, though you could probably use it to play wifi games, which we don't have yet.

Wow, I thought we'd be able to buy a PSP for around $150. Yeah, I know this is a bundle, but I don't think I've ever seen a first release bundle that's even been close to a value.

A 32MB memory stick? Aren't they giving those away in cereal boxes these days? Seriously, you can buy a 512MB stick for under $80, what good is 32MB? Sounds like the wimpy cards they throw in with digital cameras.

Who cares about the Spider-Man movie? Anyone that wants to see it on their PSP probably already owns the DVD and could rip their own copy to a memory stick.

The only thing of value might be the battery.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the stripped down version.

Scott

How did you get NFS? You have Beta's? I've seen some pics but I'm not sure since I may get TWgolf in a couple of weeks. What do you mean about the memory stick? You weren't able to view pics and movies? I do it all the time on my PSP.

Firewire is not a Sony owned technology. In fact Apple had a great deal of involvement in it's development. Sony owns "iLINK", their cheesey version of firewire. Sony is incapable of conforming to existing standards, so hey had to go and do their own thing.

yes and apple gets royalties on firewire ports, something that i doubt sony would encourage. as far as playing movies/music via the memory stick, its being done now. there's a whole web page dedicated to converting your dvds to the psp's mpeg 4 format and screen size. i'll find it later and give the link

So then a 1GB mem stick would be needed for a full (2 hr) DVD converted over for good quality PSP playback ... damn [ 1GB duo-pro mem sticks are not cheap ] .

--- And here I was hoping to build a collection of dvd-PSP movies to toss in my pocket .

--- Guess the movie selection will be mostly limited to buying the UMD versions [ which had better be cheaper than buying the regular DVD or I will not be buying any ... as I cannot imagine anybody else would either ] .

--- My anticipation of the PSP's movie conversion/playback feature just did a serious nose dive :( .

yeah full movies via memory stick are going to be pretty exotic in my house too. 1 gb mem sticks are something like $160 each. short, 30 minute movies like tv episodes would be fine though. the problem is getting them onto the stick takes some effort. its not like i can just quickly download yesterday's simpsons episode to the psp while i'm running out of the house late for work.

at those costs it really is a pipe dream to expect you will have a nice video collection for the psp anytime soon

My question is, can the battery last for 2 1/2 hours to play back Spiderman 2? The battery seems kind of weak.

it comes with one battery. and the battery life is quite sufficient for a full length movie. it would be kind of silly for sony to not only release a system but also pack in a movie with it that couldn't be watched due to battery life, don't you think?

The value pack comes with 1 battery and it is sufficient for a 2 1/2 hour umd movie. 1 gig sticks can be found for $85 on a website I visited the other day, and if you do price searches they average about $115. I think it's worth it because if you encode at QB4 (a smaller but good quality compression) you can keep 2 movies on the stick. Once you're through just dump them and put the next 2 on there. For one, it's cheaper in the long run because you're not buying UMD's all the time, also, streaming the movies off the mem stick conserves battery life big time. From what I've seen, you can probably get about 5+ hours of movie watching before a recharge through the mem stick.

Don't think of it as screendoor, it's more like an infinite game of tic tac toe.

depends on how you're transferring it. if you have a nice usb 2.0 or firewire card reader, it will transfer in no time at all, maybe 2-3 min.

It has been announced by Sony that most PSP games will be $40 each so I am pretty sure that is what you heard. Also though not yet announced I would guess that PSP movies will probably be from $10 to $15 each.
