I will personally do my movie watching through the memory stick.

Ditto...

I wonder which would have smoother playback, UMD or Mem Stick?
newsguy's Avatar newsguy 08:20 PM 02-11-2005
Well, from watching movies on my memory stick, I would say that the highest bitrate encode is good enough, but nowhere near UMD quality. A UMD video like the ones on the Japanese demo disc looks crisper than a DVD running @ 480p (probably due to the smaller screen). I don't care for it though because I'm not going to spend money on a movie I already own.

*edit* Also, movies running off the memory stick conserve battery life like you wouldn't believe.

I wouldn't start buying UMD movies until there were other devices that can use the UMD (other than something made by Sony).

I guess it is time for me to build my 1 TB media server! :D I might as way save the DVDs I rip for the PSP.

I thought the first UMD movie was Spiderman 2 -shipping with the first million PSP's on March 24.

the thread topic is incorrect. The first psp movie releases on march 23, not april 19. it is spiderman 2 and comes packed in with the psp

Correct, first movie releases you pay for.

i'm still not sold on the value of these premade umd movies. i have neither the intention nor the desire to re buy my collection (or even part of it) in a new format.

Pricing will be interesting on these. Since they wouldn't be of any real value outside of a PSP, I can't imagine them selling for more than $10 each.

I know I wouldn't pay more than $5, but I could see Sony selling them for $20 - $30.

You're probably right about the $20+ price point. To release these movies at $5 would be like opening a floodgate to piracy, in the eyes of Sony. No matter how secure their technology is, it can and will be cracked.

In reality? $5 movies would probably be a goldmine for any company that sold at that pricepoint. I know a lot of people who would stop downloading movies illegally if they could get a new hardcopy for $5.

UMD uses 128-bit AES encryption which is the basis for the AACS encryption system that will be used in Blu-ray and HD-DVD. As such it would be very hard to break and since there is no plan to release a consumer UMD writer I don't think it will ever be broken. After all DVD provides higher resolution video with a already broken encyption system. The only reason then that the price may be high for UMD movies is that Sony may want to make some profit on the PSP. I would consider a high UMD price to be $15 or more.

I sense this is going to be one of those deals where 10 years from now the folks that got a PSP will have 5 or so movies collecting dust in a closet that they haven't been able to watch for a long time since the PSP will be long gone. Sorta like discovision on a smaller scale.

Pre made movie discs are not for the guys/gals who don't mind ripping and transfering dvd to memory stick. They're for the moms and dads who want their kids to shut up and be quiet on those long road trips.

Also are we taking bets on how long it takes for porn to show up on this thing, I say three weeks tops:)
voodoogmr's Avatar voodoogmr 09:31 AM 02-23-2005
LOL @ getme. I'm sure the p0rn producers are already scrambling to get UMD authoring and replication systems. Three weeks is being generous :)

I have over 400 DVDs, so I'm not about to start re-buying movies on UMD. I will probably stick with the big fat Memory Stick I'm planning on getting. Too bad that 1 GB is nowhere near enough storage for me. C'mon Sony, Give us at least a 200 GB stick for under $100. Is that too much to ask?? heheh
