If this only happens at the PS3's XMB screen, I would just disable deep color mode. But, if it happens during DVD playback then I would get another cable.

I have just purchased a new 120g ps3 and a new Samsung pn58c8000 plasma 3D tv. I am getting a broken mirror image on the top portion of the screen that runs horizontally accross the screen while playing games. It comes and goes randomly and when it does it only last 5-10 seconds. I disabled the 1080p res. on the ps3 and turned on the 720p and I have not seen the line. So is it the ps3, the tv, or maybe the monster brand 1.4 6ft. gold plated cable? Any info is much appreciated!

So I got my ps3 about a week ago and used normal av cables, and there was no issue. I purchased a 30ft 1.4 hdmi cable from ebay ($10), and ran it through the walls to the tv (phillips 1080i). Now I get the "snow" anytime there is a black background. Also the picture cuts out every few minutes to a fuzzy black and white, then green, then back to normal in a few seconds. This is becoming more and more annoying everytime I play. Should I try a monoprice cable? They have a 30ft, but its standard speed, I dont know if I need high speed or not. Has anyone fixed this issue by changing their cable? Thanks!

I tried using different HDMI ports on the TV, and holding the power button down on the ps3, and tried different display settings on the ps3.

I bolded what your problem is, in my opinion, arenn21.

If your going to run cables through walls, where electrical wires and other possible issues are, you have to pay the money and get a quality cable with plenty of shielding.

A long run like yours just makes it even more of a problem for you right now.

Just say no to cable.

I have my PS3 running through my receiver using hdmi then on to my TV. However the HDMI on my TV has stopped working. has anybody used one of these two products for converting HDMI to component? I prefer keeping all my devices running through HDMI to the receiver.

Here is my current set-up:

PS3 --> HDMI --> Sony KDL46EX700
Dish VIP 722 --> HDMI --> Sony KDL46EX700
Sony KDL46EX700 -> TOSLINK out --> Yamaha A/V Receiver (no HDMI inputs)

It is my understanding this Sony TV will pass DD5.1 from HDMI input to TOSLINK output. It does exactly that for the Dish receiver audio. The PS3 audio however is downgraded to 2 channel stereo. Need guidance in PS3 Sound and Video BD Audio settings to make this happen if this is possible. I do realize the TV will not pass DTS but I can live with that.

I know I can go ...
PS3 --> HDMI --> Sony KDL46EX700
PS3 --> TOSLINK --> Yamaha A/V Receiver
... but prefer not to.

Thanks in advance.

I just bought a Sony KDL nx800. I'm having sound problems with ps3 games. Most often during cutscenes, but sometimes during gameplay, the audio stutters, lags, or drops out completely. This only happens with certain games like Uncharted2, GOW III, Killzone2 and now Transformers. Battlefield doesn't have any problems.

I've got it connected as such with monoprice HDMI cables and set up per batpigs page.

PS3 Slim>>HDMI>>DENON 1610>>KDL nx800

Its driving me nuts. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have an older crt hdtv that has 480 and 1080i. Will this hdmi detective work in getting the ps3 to think I have 720p,

That box doesn't look like it's scaling anything, it's just fixing EDID. So, you could use it to trick your PS3 in to spitting out 720p, but then your TV would just freak out over the incoming signal.

What you probably want is some sort of scaler that accepts 720p HDMI input, and will scale that out for (DVI?) 1080i output.

my hdtv crt would take the 720p and upscale it to 1080i I thought since I played 720p pc games and they look sharp

Then why not just feed your CRT 720p over HDMI out of the PS3 in the first place? Why go through any sort of adapter at all?

Either you aren't giving us enough information, you are trying to make things more complicated than they need to be, or you are failing to understand the resolution capabilities of your display.

So, what are you trying to do? What output and input are you using? And what is the make/model of your display?

Older crt tube hdtvs only have 480 and 1080i so when the ps3 outputs 720p and 720p is undetected in the crt tube tv, the ps3 down converts to 480p. Here is the sony thread documenting the frustration

maybe the ps3 will think of the hdmi detective as a 720p display so it won't downconvert, then outputs 720p to the tv where the crt can upscale it to 1080i. Play all games at 1080i is what all of us using crts wanted since the ps3 came out.

If the display accepted 720p in over HDMI, then it would just work already. Since it doesn't it also isn't going to scale that image to 1080i, as it won't know what to do with the incoming signal. Chances are that the only 720p it knows what to do with is 720p from it's internal antenna tuner, not from external sources.

So, what you need is a scaler that accepts 720p HDMI in, and spits out 1080i HDMI out. A lot of receivers should be able to take care of this for you these days, or you can pick up a separate scaler. The problem that you are pretty rapidly faced with though is that cheap scalers kind of look like crap and introduce some pretty serious lag, and good scalers/receivers are probably in the "just replace the TV with a 42" plasma/32" LCD" price range.

Your best bet really is to just play your games at 1080i when the PS3 will let you, and play the other titles at 480p until it's time to buy a new display. Everything else is likely to just degrade your experience, make life a hassle, or make no sense from a financial standpoint given the alternative of buying a new display.

darklordjames is absolutely right, saintsaints.

Whatever you do, don't spend a penny on that old TV, it's just not worth it.

Save your money and buy a new one, they're cheaper than ever now.

I set pc games at 720p hdmi and let the crt upscale to 1080i and look fine. Also 720p wmv files and anything from the htpc I have that is 720p upscaled to 1080i looks fine.

old tv, I like crt with superior colors, black levels and zero refresh rate over plasmas especially for gaming.

Again, I think someone read wrong, I'm glad the box cant upscale, the hdmi detective inputs and outputs without heavy upscaling processing so maybe no lag and for eighty dollars to play all ps3 games in 1080i on a crt, anyone want to try it

Can someone read the pdf and tell me what might happen if I used the gefen hdmi detective between the ps3 and a 480 / 1080i crt. Tired of playing 720p games at 480p because of the ps3 downscaling problem

I just got a PS3 120g slim since my older model got the bad case of YLOD. I was given this one as a replacement. As soon as i plugged it i noticed the flicker right away. I thought the cable would've been the issue since it's an older cable and not a new cat 2 cable. But before I made a trip to the store to buy yet another cable I turned off the deep color setting and viola. I have a sammy series 5 model 530 which is an 8 bit TV, so it only made sense to turn the 10 bit setting off.

it works and I can enjoy my PS3 after an 8 weeks hiatus due to the repair shop...

thank you Ward.

Has anyone else had a problem with NetFlix since the transition from the disc to a downloaded file?

My disc worked just fine... my Xbox can access NetFlix just fine....

My PS-3 downloads the file just fine (I have deleted and re-downloaded 3 times), when I run the program I can contact the NetFlix servers to authenticate my account... but then the screen goes to the red NF banner and in the black space underneath reports "contacting netflix"... then after a bit "retrieving titles" for another 30 seconds then the words disappear on cycle back through "contacting netflix" ... "retrieving titles" ... it does this 3 times and then I get an error message on the screen saying that they cannot contact NetFlix and to "Try Again" with 200,300,201 in the lower right corner of the error message window.

Has anyone else had this situation?

I have re-booted my entire system and no other device has any issues contacting the internet... as the PS-3 does not have any problem accessing the internet (I can reach the store, download files, play online games)....

Just cannot use the downloaded file to access my NetFlix movies????

There are just two theories for successfully quarreling with a woman -- neither one works!

Yeah, several people appear to have the exact same problem as you. No answer as of yet though. I would imagine a firmware update pretty soon for either the OS or the NetFilx program. My 60G launch PS3 was unaffected. Which model do you have?

I just got a Denon AVR391 receiver and hooked it up to my hdtv & cable box, and trying to add my 80GB PS3. When I hook up my PS3 via HDMI the picture is too blurry/scrambled/distorted to even look at. Prior to this the PS3 was connected directly to the tv and worked fine for the past year.

When I run the auto detect function on the PS3 a menu does appear in 480p and asks if I would like to switch to HDMI, but as soon as I do the problem reappears.

A friend told me he has similar issues and it is best to connect the ps3 directly to my tv anyways, but the point of buying the receiver was to put all audio/video components into a nearby closet all connected by an HDMI cable I ran under my house leading to the TV. A custom built wall around the tv will make it extremely difficult to run another HDMI cable to the closet. Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?
