Well, just to chime in, technical, a component connection should give a better picture. If he could set the output of the device to display 480p and not 480i, then it will be more noticeable. If you are only passing 480i using S-video or Component, there would be a difference but small, and actually some folks probably wouldn't notice it.

If you really want to debate this issue, the experts are all in the Display Calibration forum, that's if you want to take advice from a Canadian.

Thanks and have a good day!

As a matter of fact, I used to own the 27" version of that exact model Sony WEGA, so I think I know a little bit about what it can do ...

It won't accept 480p. But it should look better with component/480i anyway.

Set the PS3 for 480i output. If that model WEGA has the 16:9 (aka "squeeze") mode you can even try widescreen on the PS3, see if you like it.

Look you were corrected several times, not just by me.

If you're not just a troll and really need further proof, you can look it up. I'm not going to bother with you any longer since this is off-topic anyway.

I've confirmed that 720p only works properly on the Westinghouse LTV-32W1 using a HDMI to DVI connection, but yields a rough and jagged 1080i signal using this method. On the other hand, a clean 1080i signal can be achieved using component cables, but will yield wavy lines when set to 720p.

my wife picked up a PS3 20GB for my son for Christmas and I want to make sure I can set it all up properly. My setup currently-

Pana TH-50PHD8UK
HR10-250 STB via HDMI blade
Oppo DVD via DVI blade
Sony AV receiver via component (the STB,DVD, and VCR are into the receiver for audio, and VCR through receiver video)

I understand that the PS3 has HDMI output only so what would be better-
buy a new receiver (big$) that has HDMI in/out? (don't want to do this)
buy a hdmi to dvi cable and a 2 way dvi switch?
buy a hdmi cable and a 2 way hdmi switch?

I also think my Sony receiver has only 2 optical audio inputs which are being used for the DVD and STB right now so audio is a concern also. I think what I need is a 2 in, 1 out HDMI WITH 2 in, 1 out optical audio switch, but I can't find one yet.

help and advice please, thanks!

I have a Panasonic TH-50PX600U connected to my PS3 60-gig version via HDMI. I am outputting 1080p from my PS3 and have had no issues. My set does not officially support 1080p according to Panasonic, but I am having no current issues. The picture is a bit bright, but admittedly, I have yet to calibrate my set at all. I only have two Blu-Ray movies (Taledaga Nights and Underworld 2). My only game for the PS3 is Resistance (and after getting through GoW on the X360, this game is hard for me to get into). But no issues with Resistance either when running at 720p.

My Onkyo TX-SR804 shall arrive today so I will be doing switching of all my video sources through the receiver. All in all I am very happy with the PS3 and look forward to adding to my Blu-Ray collection.

my receiver doesnt have hdmi either, BUT you can use the audio/visual cables that come with the ps3 and run those from the ps3, (red/white) to your reciver, and just set the video to go out of the hdmi, and audio to go out of the other cables to the receiver...thats waht i did

Ok everyone its my time to post now. I have a PS3 60GB Model that is currently connected to a 37" 37w3 Westy, and a Z5500 5.1 Surround Sound System.
The 5.1 Surround system is fully THX certified, and works without any issues. ( Very pleased ) The Westy on the other hand is one heck of a display for its price, but kind of leaves me with this question? The HDMI issue ( which btw I am also experiencing ) is kind of anoying. Which leaves me to belive that the Westy is at fault here. What I also noticed is when I slightly touch the cable in the back of the PS3 I loose the HDMI authentication, and I get a blinking black screen.
Another thing I relaized is that when jumping from 1080p XMB and then to a 1080p source like a game or BD, it works fine. When I launch Resistance, or Motorstorm demo, I get an authentication issue. Sometimes I don't have this issue. Strange right?

The Westy is v1.5, PS3 has v 1.30 installed ( which I hoped that would fix this issue ), and the receiver is capable of COAXIAL and OPTICAL.

As I am typing this from the PS3, I want to mention that I belive this issue has to do with the software vs. hardware.

I am using the cheapest 28awg Cable from Monoprice. I wonder if the 24awg HDMI cable w/ Netjacket is better?

What I do know is that this issues is non existant when connected via component cables. Which leaves me to belive it is either the cable, or a possible software fix?

My simplest solution for this issue curently is; jumping inputs ( ie: from HDMI to Any other Input, then back to HDMI - works! ) or turning the monitor on and off.

This leaves two questions, and they are:
1. Have you tried touching the cable on the back of the PS3, and do you loose your HDCP authentication?
2. 37w3 Owners with v1.6 do you experience this issue?

Here's what I have:

Olevia 27" LCD HDTV
Model: 427V

I bought the cheap cable from monoprice:
HDMI Cable male to male 28AWG - 3ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold-Plated)

It's connected to my 20GB PS3 and have no problem displaying 1080i, 720p, and 480p.
It flickers for a half second with digital snow when switching resolutions, but that seems normal to me. Usually inbetween the loading of a game from the XMB to the disc.

No problems with audio or video in game.

Has anyone tried connecting it through the HDMI port on the Samsung LNS4095D?

I've had issues with overscan from my PC over HDMI and was wondering if it was an issue with the PS3.

Thanks

So I turned the main power switch on the back, rebooted, and it worked with 480i but with green and purple horizontal bars in the background? when I tried 480p the same thing happened as the earlier post....I hink i will HAVE to use S-video. Can you use PS2 s-video cables on the PS3? No one seems to have dedicated PS3 s-video available?

I hooked my PS3 up to a 57" Sony WV700 rp-hdtv. It accepts 1080i and 720p signals, but converts a 720p signal to 1080i. Using a hdmi to dvi converter plug, this setup works fine. I get a 1080i (720p converted) signal that looks good. I still may hook it up to my panny plasma to see if there is much of a difference, as sometimes the grain of a rptv gets to me.

Yes, you can use the PS2's component or AV (S-Video and Composite) cables on the PS3 - I have confirmed this on my 20G PS3 and Samsung 6178.

Please let us know what you find is better on your setup - component, composite, or S-video. I'm sure that there are readers who would like to know.

Note: I am running HDMI to my 6178. I works great on 1080i and 720p (TV doesn't do 1080p in).

Thanks,

have recently upgraded to both HD-DVD (TOSH XA1) and BLU-RAY via the PS3. the HLM617W is I guess 2 or 3 generation DVI, works excellent with HD-DVD at 720P. 1080i is just too fuzzy to watch...Picture quality is amazing...I did have my set calibrated by ISF.

The problem is with the PS3. It wants to output at 1080i, when playing a bluray movie at 720P there's a frame around the entire picture. If I go to 1080i, the picture fills the screen, but has that annoying flicker that is non-existent with HD-DVD.

Any ideas? I did try and scan around to see if others are experiencing this...

Should be fine, 4ms is great for gaming......... my SXRD has 2.5ms and I just love that, anything under 8/6 should be great for gaming, even 8 is great.

Youll do just fine.

Do you own the Sony KDS-R60XBR2? I have been doing research on TVs for months and I hope to buy that TV very soon. I also own the PS3. How do you like the TV? Does the PS3 work and look good on it?

Thanks

No, I have the 60A2000 SXRD, the "step down" although in terms of overall picture quality they are about equal. One just doesnt have the WegaHD Engine... which is no biggie to me since there is no big difference at all with HD material. The XBR is better with SD material though and has PIP.

Well.... how does it look? It looks amazing!!

I can't wait to get my TV - I just ordered the stand and I hope to order the TV tomorrow. BTW - how did you adjust your TV's settings? Did you just go by what looked best, or did you get a calibration dvd, or have a professional calibrator come over, etc.?

Thanks
