Ok, I updated to Firmware 1.6. My update only took like 15 mins total.

I testing the background downloading. I went to the PS Store and downloaded 2 movie trailers.

I booted up resistance fall of man...to test playing a game...the downloads continued to play. I did not go online...I quit resistance fall of amn and checked the downloads they were running, they went from 16 percent to 25 percent. It runs one at a time just like the Xbox 360.

I played videos, music, surfed the web. The background downloading worked.

I then did this test. As my two downloads where in the que still downloading, i hit the PS button and turned off the PS3! I then turned on the PS3 and my downloads resumed!

This is tight.

I need to try a bluray movie...it think the background downloading will work here too.

That is good news. Thanks for saving me the trouble of testing this.

Let us know if it works with BD. I know BD playback disables the PS network. Wonder if it disables the network card all together.

I don't think it does. Otherwise I wouldn't have to sign out of the PSN to avoid freezes during blu-ray movies.

I will test once i get home. I know that you are autosigned in when you play a BD movie, because it will tell you when your friends logon when you are watching a movie....

So far the Download Management on the PS3 is better than the Xbox 360. Believe me I have both.

Mine does. Every time I start a BD movie, and then exit out of it. I've been signed out..and I have to sign back in. Might be part of the reason why I only had BD freeze issue once for like a second after then 1.54 update

Probably. I did turn off the auto sign-in option and didn't get any freezes while watching Casino Royale, even though I was online when it started. So maybe that's fixed it for me.

I have both as well, and functionality wise, they seem to be the same. 6 item queue limit. Downloading while doing everything except online play. Auto-resume. One thing I haven't tested on the PS3 yet that I have on the 360 is what happens when you run out of HD space during a download. On the 360, the download stops, but stays in queue. You can then free up space and resume the download from queue. However, I have yet to have the need to do any sort of file management yet on my PS3 due to space limitations, so I won't be able to test that out anytime soon. What is it that you find to be better about the PS3's download management?

Here's a neat trick. Put something in your background downloading queue so that it starts to download, and then go select something else to download. You'll be able to download two files simultaneously.

i found out that the max numer of queued downloads you can have is 16, i just wen't down my download history list and finally got to the limit and a message pops up you have reached the limit.
i also see that if you log in as another user say my japan account and download some video and put it in the background list you can now log out of that user and go to another one with out losing the download from the list and it will keep downloading no matter what user is signed in. this will make it very easy for me since i have 4 user accounts

you can also download 2 files at once, one in background and one in the ps store.

Very interesting! The initial press releases stated 6 was the limit. That's good to know, I haven't tried this out for myself, yet.

So it is 16 files cued up is the limit? This is way better than the Xbox 360 background downloads.

And we can now download 2 files at the same time?

Damn, I like..

Has anybody confirmed background downloading while playing BD movies?

Background downloads are sequential, not simultaneous. Meaning, if you have 5 items in the background download queue, they'll download one after the other. However, if you have an item downloading in the background, you can still actively download another item, but you have to sit there and watch it download. You can't transfer it to the queue, otherwise the download will pause and wait its turn. On that note, the download limit is technically 17, since you can have 16 queued up, with one downloading, and 1 actively downloading (not in the queue). Just tried that out myself.

i tried but it signs you out of the ps network once the movie starts and i didn't see the hdd light flashing while the movie started or while it was playing. so no background downloading while watching blu-ray.

now all they have to do now is give you the option to select which background download you wan't to download first or pause and go to a download that you would like first, right now it's first come first served and the only way you can select another thing in the download list is to delete things before the one you want. so download the most important thing first.

Yeah, I was thinking that it'd be a long time before I had 16 things to download on one day. I'd settle for 1-2 a week....

Talbain, maybe it won't do much for you right now.

But it's great for all the people in the UK getting a brand new, empty PS3, and people in Japan and US who are just getting one.

Happy, unhappy, what difference does it make? There's plenty of content, but it's also early in the life. The 360 and Xbox Live Marketplace went through the same growth issue. But again, what does it matter? What's so important that you need to constantly download something new off PSN?

new demos would be nice. new trailers would be nice. if they ever attach the sony connect store and unlock all that music content, that would be VERY nice. and no, there's not plenty of content. clearly you have not seen xbox live...

a handful of trailers, old demos and a crapload of "making of" resistance videos do not make for plenty of content

There is plenty of content for this point in the PSN's lifespan. You forget how sparse it was on XBL Marketplace during the same period when it first started up. At least with the PSN, I can download a QT HD trailer off quicktime.com and convert it in 5 seconds to put it on my PS3. I can't do that with the 360 so if I'm really desperate for trailers, I can put them up myself since there is no shortage of trailers there. Also, I even took the 7 minute preview of Spider-Man 3 and converted that in 5 seconds and put it on my PS3 and it looked great.

It needs time to grow.
Like the other person said, once you're caught up with PSN or Live Marketplace, there's nothing else to do.

Sony already said they are going to open of Sony Music, TV and video downloads...It will take time..once HOME goes through the beta, then all this will come together. Maybe Sony will have a better IPTV than microsoft...because we all know HOME will probably be something better than what Microsoft can do. Sony says they have been working on HOME for like 3 years....
