When using my PC, my current WU is estimated to take 104 days to complete. I'm assuming completing this WU will give me a LOT of points compared to the normal 8hr WU that my PS3 gets?

How can you check how many points your current WU will earn you once completed?

The PS3 is much more efficeint at doing the type of calculations that are required for folding. The PS3 simply walks away from your typical PC when doing these calculations.

I read on the FAH website, that the PS3 gets shorter WUs since they're not usually constantly on like some computers are.

How do you check how many points your current WU is worth?

My take on it was that the PS3 is given a shorter expiration time since it runs so fast.

By the way, the AVS Forum team is now ranked 136! We'll soon be in the top 100 at this rate.

I found this:

"How do you decide how much credit a work unit is worth? Points are determined by the performance of a given machine relative to a becnhmark machine. Before putting out any new work unit, we benchmark it on a dedicated 2.8GHz Pentium 4 machine with SSE2 disabled (more specifically, as reported by /proc/cpuinfo on linux: vendor_id : GenuineIntel, cpu family : 15, model : 2, model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, stepping : 9, cpu MHz : 2806.438, cache size : 512 KB). This machine runs linux, so all WUs are benchmarked with the linux core.

We plug the results of this into the following formula:

points = 110 * (daysPerWU)"

AT the Folding@Home points FAQ

Something is wrong. I haven't read the F@H site in a while, but I believe that your work unit will likely expire before 104 days passes. I think you may still get the points, but they need to keep the data coming in so it might not have much value to them. You might want to check the site for more info.

You have to give the client a little while to process the current WU before it will give an accurate completion time. If you upgrade to the new V6 client, I believe they have fixed this issue.

Not that I think I am a cause of a recenrt surge, but I recently started running folding full time and I noticed that we shot up in the rankings the past couple weeks while my personal ranking has shot up considerably. I think there's quite a few idle "folders" in our group.

OK. I'm in. Don't have a PSx yet, but am putting my PCs to work. The F@H site didn't like the space in my name, converted it to an underscore. That's OK. Hopefully will start to see points up there soon.

Does running the PS3 all the time shorten the life span of it?

hey hey. folded my first protein, got my first 13 points.

Along with the question about lifespan... when using the F@H client on the PS3, does the fan fun loudly/constant? Since it uses 100% of the CPU, I would guess yes, but as I don't yet have a PS3 to confirm...

Been running mine 24/7 ever since Folding was released, no fan noise no other problems.
How long that will last is the question but I'm not stopping.

daily fluctuations? Personally, I've moved into the top 200 for the team. Hope to break top 100 by the end of the month. Might have to throw a few more CPUs at it, though.

We might be. I don't know who, but it looks like someone that was in the top 10 until yesterday, turned something off. All of a sudden yesterday I moved to #10 after being #11 for quite some time. mwlou88 who was #10 has moved to #9 and I haven't paid attention to who the rest of the top 10 were. Anyway I'll gloat abit about making the AVS Forum Folding@Home "Top 10"

This thread needs a bump.

I see we're still sitting at 133.

I've made it to the AVS top 100 group. I don't know if I have anymore CPUs I can throw at it, but I'll certainly give a look around...

I had to take the PS3 off the program (due to power consumption concerns) but I just built an very power efficient Quad core machine that I will break in with the FOlding program.

Well, it's starting to turn cold here, so I fired up my PS3 and PC SMP client for some more full-time folding goodness! We need to start the winter push to get us into the top 100! It is easily do-able. After that, it's a race to see how high we can get before everybody stops folding once the weather warms up.
