I had a major hardware failure where I lost the RAID on the main ESX server where all my business stuff is running. I had to divert all resources into rebuilding and recovering.
Basically, I had what my RAID controller thought was the loss of two drives in a RAID 5 array. In reality, one drive developed a bad sector and remapped it, but that triggered a verification of the array. At something around 95% complete, a different drive failed HARD.
The first drive was fine, but the controller didn't THINK it was fine, so the array went offline. I had to use a commercial tool to reconstruct an image of the array from its remaining drives--and for 3 TB, that process took almost TEN DAYS.
I'm happy (and a little proud) to say that I'm back and with ZERO data loss.
But man oh man that was a nail-biting week--once you're like 5-6 days in you just dread the possibility of a power failure and having to start all over again!
