I was reading a thread in the HTIB section, specifically about DENON 487DV, my receiver, and I seemed to understand the Analog connection from the receiver to PS3 would give me lossless sound where optical could not

Is that right? Is there an instance where the red and white cables would be the preferred connection method over optical

Please help.

You seem to be confusing two different things here. While it is true that Dolby Digital is a form of lossy compression, it is superior to the matrix encoding used to encode surround to two channels. I believe that the discussion regarding the PS3 has primarily been between the PCM audio with HDMI vs. the Dolby Digital audio with optical.

I don't know if the PS3 supports outputting 6-channel discreet analog output. I haven't seen any such cable.

The red and white analog connection would be preferrable when using Pro Logic II games. For some reason, it has much better channel separation and volume than through optical. You're probably thinking of the analog connections made on sacd and dvd-audio players which also put 5.1 through those connections. The PS3 does not offer that kind of connection.
