I'm primarily using my PS3 for BD playback on my HDTV with 720P native resolution. Right now I have 480P, 720P and 1080i resolution checked and the PS3 defaults to 1080i.

Based on some of my readings on the forums, 720P would be a better resolution so I'm thinking of changing it (uncheking 1080i). Is that a good idea? What resolution do you have yours at? What impact do you forsee if I play games in the future with max res @720P?

TIA

I always thought conventional wisdom said that 1080i was better for movies (and static images) while 720P was better for video games (moving images). Though to answer the question I use 1080p for everything, blu-ray included.

I have 1080p, but in your situation the PS3 cannot play BD movies at 720P you so want 1080i checked at all times. If you play a 720P game it will auto downscale to 720p.

I'm not sure what you're asking.

If you have a 720p native display you have no choice but to have all 480/720/1080i checked and it will output 1080i for BD playback and your display will scale to 720p appropriately. Right now there is no 720p output for BD playback.

Although, there have been rumors of a 720P support for BD on a future firmware update. But I've been hearing this for awhile and still nothing yet.

Yeah. The original Japanese release had 720p output and then after the first firmware update it dissapeared. So, the PS3 is capable of 720p BD output. Why it's taking so long is anyone's guess. I have a 720p display so could really benefit from it. Hopefully it will be coming along with the DVD upscalling updates.

1080i output for bluray is better than 720p...but if your display is true 720p then 720p would be better.

But you would be better off getting a 1080p tv to get the full benefits of bluray.

I hate when someone posts a serious question and get stupid recommendations that he should just replace his tv, etc...

You do realize that if you aren't sitting a certain distance from your 1080p display that you might be just as well off with a 720p display?

Nothing stops you from moving closer!

If you are sitting so far away that 1080 doesn't matter, than your original question is irrelevant. Plus, as the other posters pointed out, the PS3 will only output movies at 1080i, 1080p, or 480p, so don't try to force 720p or you'll end up with 4080p.

Hey, lots more people have 720p/1080i displays (and other resolutions) than 1080p, so stop telling people to upgrade when they ask a question that has nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't mind upgrading, but of course you're welcome to give me the money to do so.

I actually didn't know that the PS3 does not do 720P for BD movie playback. Good to know. I leave the checks on 480P 720P and 1080i then - thanks.
