Trailer looks amazing.

So it is real time meaning the action does not stop like in turn based rpg's? So does that mean you control the actions of the character in real time?

I could never get into FF because of the action stopping and not being able to actually completely control the characters.

That wasn't what I meant when I was referring to "real-time," but to answer your question, yes it is not a turn-based RPG game.

I think what you're describing is Action-RPG. And yes, this game appears to be so far.

There's turn-based RPG, time-based RPGs, action-RPG, and strategy-RPG (I'm sure there's others, but that's all that comes to mind at the moment). Turn-based RPG is literally that. You make all your moves when it's your turn. Time-based RPGs come in 2 flavors (that I can think of): 1) turn/speed-based, where an atribute of your characters determines when they can attack, but all actions are stopped when it is your characters' turn. 2) time-based, where you must wait a certain amount of time before attacking, but actions do not stop.

I think FF VII and later are all the latter. I prefer turn-based or turn/speed-based.

I think I prefer the action rpg's so this is one to keep an eye on for me. Although, when FF comes out I may have to give turn based a try.

Final Fantasy? That's not really a turn-based game anymore. I don't know for sure, I've only seen game play from VII, but I thought it was time-based. If you don't take any action, the monsters keep attacking.

There are 2 Final Fantasy XIII games coming out for the PS3. One is an RPG similar to the previous Final Fantasy games. But the other is going to be an Action RPG like Kingdom Hearts I/II.

I'm looking forward to the Action RPG game.

Oh, I guess I didn't really know the difference between turn and time based since I never played them. The mud is slowly clearing.

Another Q

From what I understand (which is very little) only one of the two FF games will be a PS3 exclusive. I think it is FFXIII which is suposedley the true FF successor and the other is the VS's game or something. So what kind of game will FFXIII be?

FF VS XIII, I believe, is still a PS3 exclusive. It's the other FF XIII games that are going to be on other platforms (I think there's like 5 FF XIII games all together....one of them is a mobile phone game).

FF13 and FFV13 are both real time. No more turn based fighting. When FF12 came out, Square said something along the lines of the only reason ff7 was turn based was because of ps1 hardware limitations. From now on I'd expect every FF game to be real time. Don't quote me on that though, who knows what'll happen between now and when it comes out

WKS has me way more excited than FF13 does. I'm getting the FF7 vibe from this one. Even after seeing the KZ, MGS, Uncharted, and UT3 trailers, I still can't believe the final game is gonna look like the TGS 05 trailer. The fighting looked so smooth its crazy. Hopefully a US version comes out q1 2008

Game looks promising but the actual battle footage looks pretty clunky and awkward (especially the Giant Robot gameplay posted above).

I've had the HK trailer for this for a while now. Im pretty excited about it, should be a good sleeper hit kinda like valkyrie profile. There are a few parts of the trailer that actually look better than amazing, I cant even think of a word for how good it visual quality is. Primarily talking about the guy in the clown suit riding a aircycle...its OMFG gorgeous.

The buzz went white hot almost immediately, with everyone wanting a chance to find out more behind the gorgeous graphics and get a taste of how it would play. In the subsequent months, though, the lack of any new information let it drift out of the spotlight with so many other high profile titles getting attention. But when it came out that the game would be playable on the floor at TGS this year, it all came rushing back. So when the doors opened, that made White Knight Story stop number one.

The demo opened into an area called the Balastor Plain. Lead character Lenard and two companions stand beside a loaded wagon that needs to be escorted up the road. Camera control for looking around the 3D world offers complete freedom, and -- at least in this area -- the boundaries seem to extend a comfortable distance beyond the road. Running around and exploring the fields to either side of the road, we found a smattering of low-level creatures goofing off. With no random battles, these made a comfortable introduction to the combat system.

RPG veterans will recognize the system as somewhat similar to that used in the last Star Ocean game. Approaching an enemy will automatically put you in combat, or you can manually choose to initiate it. Once you do, an action timer ring comes up on the screen that must fill before you can act. Once all its segments are lit, you use the attack button (the usual "O" here in Japan) to make your move.

Level 5 seems to be headed towards making this a fairly easy-to-play combat system. In this demo it appears that only one attack button is used to perform all attacks. Instead of complex gestures, doing combos comes down to timing your button presses in sync with the animation of your character on the screen. Each character has a three combo strings of up to seven moves that they have available at any time. In battle, pressing up and down on the directional pad switches between them.

Assembling your combos is where your tactics will come into play. As characters gain moves they go into a library. Each has an icon, indicating what type of attack it is. The ones we saw were a sword for a standard slashing attack, a curving arrow up for a lifting attack, a straight arrow down for a slamming attack, and a burst for a finishing move. When you select a first move, it will show you in icons which moves it chains with, and then the next move does the same, and so on. Depending on what sort of enemies you face you'll likely want to keep a selection of different attack chains ready at all times. Maybe a short but fierce attack for quickly handling easier enemies, a medium length chain for fighting with the rest of your group, and a string of your best possible moves linked together for facing tougher individual foes.

At the end of the demo, we faced our first boss fight, and got a real sense for the size and scale Level 5 wants to feature in the game. Approaching a pass as we wound up the road with the cart, a giant troll-like monster confronted us that must have been 20-30 feet tall. With a full charge, Lenard inserted his sword into his bracer and transformed into the similarly towering white knight. As cool as the transformation cutscene is, we have a feeling it will be one of those things you hope is skippable in the final version (for when you just want to play and have already seen it plenty of times). In his enlarged form, combat stayed basically the same, but took on a much more epic feel with the two heavyweights slugging it out.

From what we've seen, and now played, "epic" definitely looks to be the description Level 5 is aiming for. Visually, what we played lived up to the video. The flowers that filled the field looked like we could reach into the screen and pick them. An idyllic stream flowed through the middle of the area with light glistening off its surface. And the whole scene featured a very light soft filter effect that made it look all the more natural.


This look also reinforced the sense that this game strikes a new balance in style that can appeal to both a Japanese and Western aesthetic. The costuming, detailed with bone buttons, leather lanyards, fur collars, and the like embodies all the fine finishing touches of Japanese RPGs. But the characters inside the outfits reflect a more Western sort of proportion and have a more mature look than the so-often-seen angst-riddled teens.

While no release date has yet been given, what was here to play showed quite a lot of polish. The combat played smoothly, all the graphical touches were there, and every menu looked to be fully built. With any luck, we'll soon find out when to look for it here in Japan, and can start speculating on its English localization.

Cool. The combat system kind of reminds me of the SD Gundam G Generation NEO and SEED system, where your pilots are given so many action points to use in a battle, and as you fight, you can string different types of attacks together until you've run out of action points.

Dude FFXII was time based, just because you didn't get sucked into random encounters and you had control over your characters movement that didn't change. You still picked your actions from a menu, you still waited for a bar to fill up before you could take an action, you still waited for a bar to fill up before a spell got cast, and the same rules applied to your enemies. Real-time means you push a button and something happens (KH for example is real-time).

FFvsXIII is indeed confirmed to be an action RPG like KH (hell Tetsuya Nomura's studio is even developing it). There's little info on XIII at the moment and nothing on how the combat will work but I'd be willing to wager it will be a more refined and prettier approach to how FFXII worked.

Anyway to stay on topic, WKS looks really kickass

Well the Japanese version was scheduled for this month. That doesn't look to be happening, but perhaps it'll arrive in January. I don't know how far behind an english version is.

Which part? Lazy? Incapable? Or both?

Even the release date for the Japan version was very vague. On IGN, they had it listed as "December 31, 2008".

I heard some tidbits of info between now and last year, but there wasn't much to report on. Only, that they are still working on it.
