A WipEout freak I know is saying that "all indications point to spring," and that it will probably be released in March in Europe, with the rest of the world getting it in April/May, but even he can't find an official release date yet.

I'm dyyyyyyying for this game. 1up had a little update with the same video http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166429 and they're saying it's evolved past an HD remix into a full fledged wip3out game. I might break down and pick up a PSP + Pulse to tide me over.

If you're excited about Wipeout and haven't tried RidgeRacer 7 on the PS3, I suggest you give it a shot. It runs full 1080P at 60Hz and even though the vehicles look like cars, they actually drive like hovercraft. I honestly think Wipeout fans would have a blast with RR7 and I'll bet you can get it cheap these days.

I agree 100%. Hands down the best arcade racer I've played in years if not ever.

I never did understand the hatred for Ridgeracer, it's a pretty good game in my books, just not Wipeout good

Uhm even the immortal WipEout XL only had 8 tracks. Forward/backward options will add some variety most likely to the new game, but yes, expect to buy more tracks in this day and age.

Speaking of which, here is a description of all eight tracks coming to the PS3 version in full 1080P/60fps:

Quote:

# Vineta K – On the southern shores of Makana Island, the circuit at Vineta K snakes in and out of the ocean and across the beaches. The highlights of this 4.4km track include spectacular underwater tunnels and cutting-edge architecture along the waterfront.
# Chenghou Project – The feature-packed circuit at Chenghou Project weaves its way around the offices and corporate buildings of Makana Island's business district. The 4.8 km track contains a tricky inverse-cambered spiral and culminates in a long jump into the tunnelled entry of the final chicane.
# Sebenco Climb – The 4.8 km Sebenco Climb track is cut into the hillsides of Makana's Sebenco mountain range. It features a steep traverse up the snowy mountainside, followed by a breathtaking plunge into an icy tunnel carved through the very heart of the mountain. The final section takes pilots through a challengingly tight chicane before they swing back onto the grid.
# Sol 2 – The 4.4 km Sol 2 circuit hangs suspended in the clouds high above Makana Island. Consisting of a series of fast-flowing, occasionally open-sided corners linked by sweeping straights, the combination of harsh sunlight and blind summits ensure that Sol 2 is a test of nerve for every speed class.
# Ubermall – In the heart of Makana Island's commercial zone is Ubermall, a 4.6 km circuit built into a vast shopping centre. The latter half of the track contains a brief split which rejoins into a narrow hill, followed by an outdoor park section that leads swiftly to the finish.
# Anulpha Pass – The 5 km Anulpha Pass track is located in a custom-built entertainment arena on the east side of Makana Island. Although the track looks deceptively simple from above, the undulations of the track surface and narrow skill-cut are enough to keep any racer on their toes.
# Moa Therma – The immense man-made complex of Moa Therma is located just off the northern coast of Sicily, with around a third of the track surface built using mag-strip technology. The centrepiece of this 5.3 km circuit is the gigantic horizontal loop which sits just above sea level.
# Metropia – The 4.7 km Metropia circuit weaves its way between the skyscrapers and traffic control towers that dominate the Kyoto skyline. Glass-bottomed track surfaces and a stunning vertical mag-strip drop into the depths of the city are just two of the highlights of this popular track.

What worries me is how much this game is going to cost? The more work/hype that goes into it the more it's going to cost. I can see it costing as much as Warhawk now- so $29.95 as a downloadable game.

That sounds about right. I'd pay that much for quality release like this. Great gameplay, a licensed soundtrack of nine songs remixed to 5.1 and a top notch engine with online play from day one is pretty much all one can ask to justify that price.

Yep, XL and the original Wipeout both had only 8 tracks but boy, did I play those tracks. Wipeout was and still is my best game of all time!! It was a revelation when it first came out! Made me buy my very first 50" TV!!!

It's just that I was hopping to get at least as many tracks/variations we got in Fusion... But Hey, if we get the old physics back I'm o.k. with it. I didn't like Fusion's physics especially while jumping. I wand to be able to miss a jump!

...and those tracks look more and more gorgeous! Still a must buy for me!! My 72" HDTV is ready!

Can you imagine if they release an XL track pack to bring those eight courses back?! I would immediately get a court to issue a restraining order on my family to stay away from me so I could have more time to play it!

I could've sworn I posted that video in my last post... I had updated the first post with it a few days ago (from Eurogamer's site) but I forgot to add it here. Thanks for adding it.

I hope that tune in the trailer is one of the ones for the game!

But is that... a bad thing? From what we have seen, this game has evolved quite a bit, becoming a fully fledged game in the franchise rather than just an HD concept of sorts for the series. IMO they don't even need to release a "true" WipeOut PS3 for a long time... just release this, charge $30, and make a few bonus packs available.

This game can't come out soon enough, I loved F-Zero on SNES and have never played anything similar since. I missed out on the original Wipeout so this will be my first taste of this franchise.

WipeOut is different in a lot of important ways. Later F-Zero titles actually borrowed quite a bit from WipeOut games.

I recommend checking out any of the PSP or PSX games. The very first title is on PSN and it's actually still quite good.

Who really knows what's up with this game? They showed it as far back as Aug '07 and keep saying it's being released any time now. We're almost mid '08 already.

Theory... I think that games like this are being held up in order to synch up with HOME. The developers are being told (my guess) the things these games need to have to make player matching work with the new application, so the open Beta at the very least will probably need to come before we see this game.

Already-released games like Uncharted and Resistance have elaborate Home features, so I don't think that's it.

I really just think the scope of the game has expanded tremendously the past few months, from a more-or-less HD upgrade of Pulse to a totally new WipeOut game.

Those games were released in time frames well before HOME's open beta was on the horizon. They have nothing to do with the theory I threw out considering WO:HD is a later release. Uncharted was only at the end of last year, but its HOME add-on isn't involving a multi-player lobby segment, which is the largest feature HOME (and the new XMB) will add.

It doesn't make much sense at this late date to create an elaborate and unique lobby feature exclusively for WO:HD, release the game, and then have that lobby system replaced quickly by HOME's universal lobby system. It makes more sense that if they hold off a bit, they can release WO:HD with access to HOME's lobby system from day one. But I could be 100% wrong as I have no idea why the game isn't out/

Perhaps we are both right, and they are just taking advantage of that time to upgrade the game as much as possible. What is the reason, who knows, chicken or the egg.
