I mean I guess I could see if you wanted to browse the internet on your TV but if that's the case then why not just hook your computer up to the TV?

TV's downstairs, computer's upstairs. Also connecting them involves lugging this big box up and down the stairs.

Because in the last 48 hours it is now possible for retails PS3s to run unsigned code. Which may well increase the chances of the PS3 receiving a better browser.

Looking into the PS3, and also need current infomation regarding the browser. Is it correct that you still cannot access network video sites like CBS, NBC, ABC, etc, on it? What about video file downloads-if you d/led an anime from say the Funimation website-paid for of course, can save it and play it back on the ps3's hdd?

Dazed and confused over high tech.

Sigh...Concrap. The Internet Overlord Cometh

Well if you want it to be taken seriously learn to use the english language correctly. I suggest you get a dictionary and look up the difference between "Alternate" and "Alternative"

Then again if you want your PS3 to contaiually swap between Opera and the PS3 browser submit your petition.

Wow, that's a lot of fail for a first post. Nothing like responding to a 10 month old post while getting all snarky about using the English (note capitalization) language correctly while using fake words like "contaiually." I can't wait for your continued participation in this forum. You'll go far--I can see it now.

And you do realize that alternate is the correct word? He wasn't using it in verb form, but rather in noun form, meaning a "substitute".

So next time you try and flame somebody, make sure you know what your talking about

I mean, just look at the title of the thread. Don't be ignorant. Maybe alternative would have been better, but alternate is not wrong.

I find it funnier that someone has the audacity to put someone down for their use of the English language while writing:

I have heard all the people complain about the browser and all the people ask why it matters...It matters because its supposed to be a Multimedia Powerhouse!

I should be able to play games on it, watch movies via DVD, BluRay and thru my Network, play music via CD flash drive or thru my Network, watch TV via Netflix, Hulu or any online website that offers their episodes via a web browser.

Many people are bailing on cable TV these days because its cheaper to pay for High Speed internet and watch TV and Movies for free or for little cost. I did...I used to pay over $200 a month for TV and Internet. Now I pay $30 for internet, $8 for Netflix and watch all my favorite shows one week later via NBC, CBS and ABC's websites in full HD! The problem is to watch my TV episodes I have to get out my laptop and hook it up to the TV with an HDMI cable. Its a hassle...My PS3 browser should allow the same!!!

Put Chrome on it and call it a day! A big selling point when the PS3 came out was that it could do everything! If you use a computer for strictly entertainment purposes then the PS3 should fill that void...its more than capable.

I'm viewing this from my PS3 consol and i'm typing on a wireless keyboard. Being three yeas later Playstation has updated things like hulu and netflix while adding NHL and other useless (to me) things on my PS3 and given the time has not done anything with the Browser. I belive I went to a website belive i was trying to watch something that is not on my NetFlix Stream and was told my Browser was three yeas old and youtube even has problems working correctly. I try to access my FaceBook account from my PS3 witch has Java and can't seem to view anything successfully. I belive that if Sony can change my Ps3 with an update adding the "TV & television" Selection adding a whole new thing to my screen they can upgrade our internet browser to have a more sufficent browsing experience. Although i'm not complaing because it is in fact free. Compared to the X box the playstation has TWO processers and should be able to move at such higher speeds. Thank you, Mitchell. P.S ABC ... No ... FOX YES!!! GLEE. O N PORN!

The PS3 has 7 SPU co-processors, but CPU power generally isn't the issue with a web browser speeds, the network between you and the web server plus the response time on the server is.

Also, most browsers limit the amount of connections to a web site to four (get the page, get the stylesheet, get the first graphic, get the second graphic) in order to prevent clobbering the web server with an overload of requests at the same time.

The network is more likely the issue than processors, but that's my semi-informed opinion. As web pages become more like software, the web browser engine becomes the next issue, because having more processors will not guarantee a speed increase if the engine won't recognize them!

Cheers.

The PS3 browser is the worst browser I have ever used. Even worse then the early versions of IE. All the PS3 browser does is lock up your entire system. Less websites actually work anymore. All I use it for is to do speedtests and even speedtest.net does not work anymore so I use the speedtest from my provider.

Yahoo is now recognizing my ps3 browser as a mobile device, and will not load yahoo's home page. Previously it loaded no problem. When the yahoo's normal url is entered the browser is automatically changing it to the mobile url etc. Does anyone have any idea about this?

I have the same problem with the iPhone and then I noticed on the bottom of the page you can select the non-mobile version.

Unfortunately, Everyone is stuck with the browser that came with it.
By the way, I bet you did not know that the browser that PS3 comes with was made by Mozilla. The exact same company that makes the Mozilla Firefox browser, if you know what that is.
I think you can use the Linux browser on the PS3, though, I am not so sure. I would suggest trying the Linux browser out and see if it works. It probably won't work. But of course, like most stuff on the PS3, It depends on what size HDD your PS3 has, how old your PS3 is, what version your PS3 is, what your current internet connection settings and internet browser security and settings are and everything... I think it only works on a few...
But still I say go ahead and try...

The same thing happens with facebook. Facebook recognizes the PS3 as a mobile device because it is not a computer and it has a totally different set-up.
Yesterday, I typed in m.facebook.com and it actually loaded Facebook Mobile on a regular computer. Unfortunately, when you enter facebook.com into a PS3, it automatically redirects the page to m.facebook.com
I actually ended up changing my e-mail on PSN and FB and Twitter to my YouTube/Gmail Account because Yahoo! changed their set-up and updated their servers to a new version that no PS3 supports at all.
So, yeah. and I have a brand new PS3 - 250GB. Although, as soon as I got my PS3, they'd already come out with the PS4.
I would try switching.

I think you are trolling, do you have any proof to you back up your claim?

Many browsers use "Mozilla" as part of their user agent (including Internet Explorer) to allow backwards compatibility for web sites that try to detect the browser, however that does not mean the browser was made by Mozilla.org.

Apparently the browser is a Webkit-based version of Netfront, which is a browser for mobile devices developed by Access Co of Japan. This site provides some performance details: http://console.maban.co.uk/device/ps3.php

Yes i do in fact...
IF you go onto a ps3 and look under the system settings or something like that and look under About PlayStation 3 (PS3)... it will come up with under NetBSD or something like that it will say copyright owned by Mozilla 2012 and give you a description of how what yout not supposed to do and stuff...
