Upscaling my Wii & Dreamcast through a Sony STR-DA2400ES - AVS Forum

I just purchased a Sony KDL-40V4100. I have a Dreamcast (GO DC!) and a Wii, and they both look pretty bad on my big screen. So, I have a three part question.

1. I was looking into a Sony STR-DA2400ES for it's upscaling functions and price, through my work. Will the receiver make a drastic improvement with my DC and Wii upscaled to 1080p?

2. Will I see a serious amount of lag, especially from my Dreamcast which is using RCA. If it's a mater of deinterlacing, would it solve the issue by upscaling to only 1080i?

3. (an old-school question) Has anyone had good luck with using a VGA box, from the Dreamcast, with a component adaptor and an upscaling receiver?
[40v4100 only allows progressive through VGA, and DA2400 has no S-video]
I know it seams like a lot of things could go wrong, but I can't think of another way to get a decent signal.

Dreamcast VGA is 640x480p. That going directly into your display is likely to be the best that the Dreamcast will look in your setup. Otherwise, at least moving to s-video would be a vast improvement.

No, an interlaced signal has to be deinterlaced before the image is scaled, regardless of if will out interlaced or not. And even if you do output interlaced, you TV is going to deinterlace that. Besides, for the Wii you should be used Component cables for 480p for the best image, and like darklordjames said, VGA for the Dreamcast.

Also, upscaling isn't going to help much with 3D images that are rendered at low resolution, there just isn't much detail there to enhance. Displays upscale everything that is lower resolution anyway, so it isn't even a sure thing that the receiver will improve the image quality at all, it could look worse.

From what I understand, it looks like the upscaling receiver will add pixels to the existing information on the screen. Kind of like anti-aliasing.

I understand that textures won't look any better, but at least sonic won't look like an 8-bit, jagged, blue blob. Lol

I don't mean to be rude, but why does everything else I read essentially say what I stated earlier?

According to quite a few resources, basically how scaling works is by using surrounding pixels as a reference to create the new ones. As the quality of scaler increases, the greater number of original pixels are used for reference, and the amount of times they are analyzed increases. A basic scaler will use a "4 tap" system which uses the surrounding 4 pixels. "16 Tap" is common and in contrast to this, the Silicon Optix Realta analyses the surrounding 1024 pixels as reference.

From what I have gathered, the reason why my Dreamcast and Wii look terrible on my big screen is simply that TVs aren't suited for proper scaling.

My real debate now is whether I'm better off having my upscaling receiver deinterlace, or letting my LCD take care of it. I probably won't have as many black lines running through my picture if I have the receiver do it, but leaving it to the TV will reduce lag.

The vast majory of people don't understand how scaling works, but that hasn't stoped many from trying to expain it anyway. What have you been reading?

I just explained a few posts up that there is no debate to be had there. Again, an interlaced signal has to be deinterlaced before the images can be scaled.
