In case any of you are interested, the BF2 demo has just been released, you can currently find it on Gamespot. Unfortunately, their servers are being hit pretty hard, so it might take a few tries before you get a download.

I'm running 1gig of RAM and things seem to load OK. I'm wondering if anybody knows if 2gig of RAM would make any noticeable improvement.
I had to turn AA up to x6 to get the game to smooth out. It looks like butter, almost as good as Counter-Strike: Source, but it seems to chug so I turned it completely off. Sure would be nice to have that frame counter, if anybody knows the command....; )
I didnt have luck at AA set to 6x.. my optimal is everything set to high, except lighting and geometery, draw distance at 95% and AA to 4x. 3 gig of ram probably helps.
1. You have to be the commander. To bring up the map press Caps Lock.
2. I believe the only system for teaming up is the squad system.
3. Hit enter, click on squad, then click on join next to the name of a squad leader, or click on create if no squads exist.
4. The UAV shows the commander all the enemy positions within a radius of about 400 yards for about 10 seconds.
People are starting to get the strategy of this game and I've noticed a lot more teamwork going on. Still, I've only met one other person that was also using the VOIP. This game is going to rule once I can make friends with some people who actually know what their doing and can coordinate.
We should look at creating a BF2 clan here on AVSForum.

c) how do you select a squad or vote for a commander?
If you are having problems with an ATI card role back to the 5.5 drivers and that will fix the problems. I have played BF42 heavey since it came out. I play with a group where you can really play the game as it was meant to be played as part of a squad. If you like this type of game and you want to take it to the next level join an online group. BF2 is awesome. Not just based on looks or sound but they way you will be able to play this game as a squad. The one I belong to has over 50 members and with the release of BF2 it should grow to 100+. Support for many games with nearly 1000 total members worldwide. Check it out if interested @ TheArtOfWarfare.net

Well yesterday I went to ATI and got the latest drivers. I wonder if I did get the very latest....
I like it a lot! Much more than BFV. It does play like a souped up version of DC. I was thoroughly addicted to BF1942 and especially the DC mod. I like the squad based gameplay. I find it very satisfying.
I do think I'm going to have to upgrade my computer just for this game. I want more eye candy and higher resolutions. My problem is I'll have to upgrade more than just the video card. I need a new mobo to take advantage of the new cards (mine just does 4 x AGP). Does anyone have any recommendations about cards, mobos & cpus?
I really like the game thus far. I realize it is not for everyone, but I enjoy it.
I know many people had to roll back to 5.5 in order to get it to work. Keep in mind Nvidia is a sponsor and it should be no surprise there is a problem with running the game with an ATI card with current drivers. Also it should be no surprise that many cards like my GeForce Ti4400 is not supported. In fact the lowest Nvidia card on the list supported is like an FX 5700. Thats means many people wanting to play the game, including me, will be buying new cards. Imagine that.
I'm a high school teacher and have been talking trash with my students who are gamers. I tell them they are newbs and I could wipe them out in BF2. Needless to say, I'm practicing for the big match. I hope I don't lose. Probably will, though. The good news is that summer vacation just started. I'll have time to play. Whoo Whoo!

That depends on your processor and your memory. If you have less than a P4 2.2GHz and less than 1GB of ram you might be better off doing a new computer. But if you have at least those you can buy a card for $100 on up that will run the game and go in your AGP slot. I'm buying a 6600GT that will go into a 2.0 AGP slot on my MB. Thats more than whats needed. I know guys running it on an X300 and I am using a FX5500 I rented from Walmart until my new card gets here. Good Luck. See you on the Battlefield. TAW_Ledzep........
You better be careful about your trash talking. Those teenagers are good at videogames! It helps when you don't have distractions such as wife, kid, yardwork etc.
If sounds like you need to build a new PC. These folks give the best advice:
A smart thing to do these days is buy a mobo that will accept two videocards and just buy one high end card for it so you can upgrade later and run them in tandem.

er, forgive the correction but:
1: as squad leader you can hit caps lock then right-click on the map and select the action for that area including calling for arty.
4: "Scan" shows just the commander enemy positions on the entire map for 10 seconds. The UAV shows the entire team the enemy positions as you described.
2 and 3 are correct.
A question of my own. Are there seberate VIOP hot keys for talking to squad/team/all/etc. So far I've just been using the "main" key but since as you stated very few people apparently have mics it is hard to know if I am getting through to the right people.
Follow up: If there is only one VOIP key who does it talk to? is it like Commander = talks to whole team, Squad Leader = Talks to suad and commander, Rest = only talks to squad?
One flaw I've found with the game: It doesn't automatically put in you a squad. Every server I go onto, nobody is in a squad and it is chaos. Right now the single player is more enjoyable for me.
I've been playing the Battlefield series for three years and I just now figured out that you have to click on the SQUAD tab. New players are NEVER going to figure this out.
Ideally, DICE will change the game to fix this, but hopefully servers will be able to make it impossible to play unless you are in a squad.
I played the demo. I still like JointOps better. The maps in JointOps are endless (no boundaries at all). I never got into the BF games. Don't know why.

I too hope the largest map is quite a bit bigger than this medium sized one.. gives a good perspective on having to travel a distance and creates a stronger sense of realism ..not to mention I hate to get killed 2 seconds after spawning!

Chris,
Thanks for the link. I agree about buying a SLI equipped mobo even if I only buy one card. It'll increase the lifespan a bit.
As far as teenagers and gaming are concerned, you're right. They are good at videogames. I am not overly confident I'll triumph over them (I still enjoyed trash talking with them). They were dishing it right back at me. 10th graders are awesome. It is my favorite age for teaching.
My kids are old enough now that I can get a bit more gaming in. I might be behind the curve with regard to BF2 because I am leaving for Europe with the family for a month on Saturday. I'll play the heck out of the demo until then.
I run an overclocked P4, but thats because my attempts at running an overclocked Athlon64 turned out less than stellar. I got frustrated and went back to Intel. I'm happy, but Athlon64's are the better bargain usually.
Videocards? At this point I'd have to stay stick with the Geforce 6800GT series....probably the best bang for the buck, but its going to cost you a few dollars to get one, they aren't cheap.
Expensive, yes, but enough horsepower to carry you through a few years of gaming hopefully. Course if you're running a home theatre PC, maybe ATI is a better choice.

And many people like me, who have ATI cards like the very latest x850 & can't get the game to run, won't be buying the game at all as a result.
The boards for this game are littered with people like myself who load the game and get dumped back to the desktop.
Having Nvidia as a sponsor should not mean that ATI card owners should be left out and I'm sure that is not the intent of a sponsor. I have two brand new machines, one with an unsupported Nvidia card and the other with the latest ATI card. I'm not going to spend more to get one game to work.

There's a workaround to get the Ti4400 to run the demo, read it over on rage3d.com ....
Dean:
Sorry to hear about it not running on your X850XT. It runs fine on my X800XT PE. I forget which Cats I'm running, maybe 5.4, I'll double check when I get home.
TCB:
Load the demo, start a LOCAL server with the 32 player map. This way you can practice flying the jets and helos and memorize the map without being owned. I spent most of the weekend just flying the choppers and jets around, gotten pretty good with them. I can get both the Blackhawk and CobraII to do loops and barrel-rolls.
Will not run on my ATI X800XT PE rig (AMD 64 3400+@2.6) with cat 5.6 but I just read that I might have to roll back to Cat 5.5. Runs well on my 6800GT SLI system (AMD 64 3500+@2.6). Been playing just the single player since it seems I can not create or use my old account ID/PW from BF Viet Nam to log in and it keep telling me that my ID and PS and e-mail is already in taken (yes by me). I play a lot of Joint Ops and I like the map sizes of JO and hope that BF2 will be just as endless and big. Hate trying to flank and die because I couldnt get back on the map fast enuf in BF2. I was tryin reach building on the right to do some sniping and die trying to get back when it told me I was leaving the battle field. Still seems to play like all the BF series but with a lot prettier graphics. Also hate the damage models. There is no way a bullet proof vest will stop a 7.62 round much less then the 4 it seems to kill somebody. Unless the vest is armoured on top of kevlar. Still the round sould put u down, maybe not kill u outright but will put a lot of hurt on u. At least head shots do kill with 1 round. The cross hairs on the sniper rifles seem a little thick. The sniper rifles sights in JO seems to be better done. Also the lack of widescreen support is a let down and I will try the widescreen mod that posted here tonight to see what its like. Just hope that the final retail has widescreen support and have native support for the newest ATI cat drivers. Over all I was impress with the new graphics but a little disappointed with the game play so far, but still have to get on line and see if its much diff then when I played BF-VN.
Well, the orginal Battlefield 1942 was quite buggy when it came out, but they worked hard to improve it. Hopefully they do the same with this game. Don't give up hope, Dean! It is RIDICULOUS that the game is so picky about video cards. An x850xt should be able to run anything!

Such a fix would be nice, but it better force players to join a default squad, not mine.
