Anyone have any news on this game? I'm skeptical because it's being developed by Team Ninja but what I've seen so far looks interesting. Hopefully it'll take Metroid back to it's 2D side-scroller roots (although I really liked the first Metroid Prime, it pales in comparison to Super Metroid) without too much Team Ninja super crazy chaos.

Gametrailers E3 Vid for those who missed it.

Sadly nothing new. We probably won't see it till mid/late 2010, so I imagine it'll be a while till we hear more of it.

I share your concerns about Team Ninja craziness, but Nintendo'll probably do a good job of reining that in. Actually, Team Ninja filtered through Nintendo sounds like a pretty good combo to me.

Yeah, I'd think mid-late next year too but at the end of the trailer it says (in the "missile" slot) 3-29 and right below it says 2010, subtle hint that it's coming sooner than anticipated?

O rly? I can't watch the trailer at work so I can't say for sure, but I suppose that would fit into Nintendo's 2010 release calendar, which so far consists of Mario Galaxy 2 in 1Q and uh, probably Zelda around Christmas. Still, Nintendo doesn't usually nail down exact release dates this early; also 3/29's a Monday, and I think Nintendo usually goes for Sunday or Tuesday releases. We can hope, though.

I didn't notice the 3-29 in the trailer until I saw it mentioned on the "Metroidpedia" or whatever it's called, lots of speculation and such.

Ah, I see what you're referring to. Yeah, that seems to be...reading into things maybe a bit too much. That's from the trailer from this summer, right? There's no way they'd have an exact release day in mind that far in advance. As the most recent examples, we didn't find out the Wii Sports Resort or New Super Mario Bros Wii release dates until a month or two beforehand.

Excited for this game, but yeah, gonna be a looooong wait.

It does look to be mostly a 2D platformer/shooter done up with modern eye candy, as well as some 3D Prime-ish views.

Whenever it shows up, I'm in.

Yeah, I got Shadow Complex on the 360 this summer, and while I loved that game, it definitely got me wanting this game a ton (it was the same, mostly 2d, with 3d backgrounds, and occasionally a 3d fps section at a turret.)

I hope that it keeps at least some of the difficulty that Team Ninja is known for though. I'm sure since it's for Nintendo that there will have to be a easier mode, but I would love if the default mode was harder than Nintendo stuff lately (though maybe not quite as crazy as the Ninja Gaiden games' difficulties).

Shadow Complex was way better than I thought it would be, no Super Metroid/SOTN but still very good. I'd love to see more games like it.

I can't tell if kabob's post means he's read a lot of Basher's past posts or if this is his first time reading one. Either one is pretty plausible.

Hmmm, Basher's post has me wondering: how much better would OoT have been with Samus?

Ganon

Phazon beam, power bomb

End

I think Basher might be on to something!

Forget that, hyper beam him, 1 hot kill.

And whussy running shoes Zelda has vs. Samus' speed boost = no contest.

My little take, at least so far is that I do adore the Metroid series, especially the Prime games, but feel it's time to move on. To what I not sure. I'm not necissarily saying I dont want a FPS (quite the contrary), but I do feel like its time to incorporate new elements into the series--a new direction.

I have hopes that this will be good for the series mainly because Yoshio Sakamoto, co-creator of Metroid series, is producer and lead scenario designer on it. But also working on the title (besides Team Ninja, who most of my concern center around depsite the fact that they're working on the programming and model work) are 3 designers from the Metroid GBA games--and they're handling the main design. Cool eh?

And then there is this:
Quote:

Yosuke Hayashi responded by stating that while the new game will feature heavy action-based sequences, there will still be the exploration-based sequences characteristic of other Metroid games. Yoshio Sakamoto confirmed that Other M will feature story progression in the same manner as Metroid Fusion. Sakamoto states at the end that the collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja is "unlike anything that's ever been done at Nintendo; it's more than just a collaborative effort -- it's one group working toward a common goal".

Man, if they REALLY build this on the Fusion model -classic metroid gameplay, Samus "mostly alone", exploration pushed just before the point of exhaustion, huge bosses, but dialog and story when it makes sense- this will be a great game. The Prime games have all of what made Metroid cool, and were just beautiful to boot. I honestly can't wait for this game to hit.

Other side, here... Part of me is thinking: based on the (seemingly) heavy story element and strangely cinematic teasers to date, could this new direction make Metroid TOO next gen, similar to the way Sega did with Sonic back in the day? I love the Sonic Adventure games, still play 'em, but there's been some really bad things in there that just stick out as "not Sonic"... and the ever-expanding list of extra friggin' characters got bulky. Unless Needlemouse fixes that, Sonic has no foreseeable return to classic in sight.

I doubt N would ever go THAT far, but I think there's a pretty hard line of what is/isn't Metroid for most of it's fans, something too far removed from could certainly damage the equity if crossed.

I'm actually okay with the delay too, as I don't really mind my big anticipated games being spaced out more at this point.

I have a hard time believing this will actually be rated M when it comes out, though. A first-party-published M-rated game on Wii? No chance. Despite the "harder edge" this is supposed to have, it's not like Nintendo has any interest in turning one of their bigger franchises into GTA.

Didn't Nintendo themselves refer to it as Metroid Other M though?

I still haven't played any of the metroid prime trilogy games! I bought them when they were like $20 and I still haven't played them.

Sucks that i couldn't get into Mario Galaxy or Metroid because for most people they have those two huge games and Zelda this year and all I have is Zelda... and that's if they don't postpone it.
