Okay gang,

I've gotten a couple of games for the Wii so far for Xmas:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (played 1 awhile ago)
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Wii Carnival
Mario Kart Wii
***and of course the packed in Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort***

All of the above I consider kid friendly games. The Mario titles my 5 year old and 3 year old will likely sit on my lap and watch me play. Rabbids and Carnival can probably be played by my 5 year old w/ some help. Mario Kart, well I just sorta picked it up.

Now I'm looking for one game that I can play w/o the kids around that is more shooter oriented. I'm not interested in COD as I'll play that on my 360. So ....

Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Goldeneye Wii
Conduit
Red Steel 2

Those are the ones I'm considering. I can only seem to get Metroid used nowadays, so I was leaning in that direction due to availability concerns. However, I'm going to guess that the other 3 have improvements seeing as how they are newer games and may have benefited from coming out later in the life cycle?

What would you guys advise?

Thanks !

I no longer own a Wii as I really had no place for it in my entertainment system, but based on my experiences when I did own one, I'd suggest either The Conduit or Metroid Prime Trilogy (which includes Wii enhanced versions of all three Prime games including Corruption).

Conduit is the easier game by far; it has some nice graphics for a Wii game, very good controls and a nice variety of weapons. The action is fast but never overly difficult. Never tried the online mode. You should be able to get it for a song these days.

The Metroid Prime games are fun, beautiful, deep shooters; just be aware that you'll need to spend a lot of time exploring and back-tracking to make progress as that is the way they are designed. Some of the boss encounters can be frustrating until you figure out the patterns, especially if you're going from a control pad mindset to the Wiimote. Still great bang for your buck.

So, for quick pick up and play I'd say Conduit; for something deeper I'd go with Metroid.

I'd go Metroid or Red Steel simply by virtue of their being the most different from COD or anything you could play on your 360. Goldeneye is solid and I hear Conduit is at least decent, but those are sort of more traditional FPS games, put on the Wii as if only to say "look, Wii has some FPS's now." (Albeit with superior pointer controls...) Metroid is really more of a first-person exploration/adventure--though still with plenty of shooting--and Red Steel 2 focuses mostly on swordplay via motion control. Of those two, Metroid is by far better made, but Red Steel 2 isn't bad either, especially since you can find it fairly easily for $10-20.

Do you feel the triliogy is worth the price premium (since Ebay and 3rd party resellers are my only option)? Have the first 2 in the series been remade enough to make it pop on the Wii? Or would I be better off just getting Corruption and calling it a day?

I was going to say Trilogy is a no-brainer, but I just checked ebay and holy crap are they gouging for that thing now. It wasn't uncommon to find it for $20 new when it was on the shelves, but I guess since it's discontinued people feel free to charge $80-100? Insanity. I haven't played Trilogy myself, but seeing as I consider MP2 to be possibly the worst game in the entire franchise on account of being unbelievably boring in a way I find it difficult to believe that new controls could fix, I'd say just get MP3 by itself for $15ish and don't give in to gougers.

PS I am super, super-biased about MP2, so you may want to get other feedback. I'm sure jwebb could chime in on this.

Yah, its quite steep. I really don't want to spend 80 bucks on something like this if its not worth it. Especially if I can get Corruption for like 20 bucks and Other M just recently went on sale for 25.

While apparently not available as an online purchase, check your local GameStop. MP Trilogy sells used for $40 - 3 in my neck of the woods have used copies on hand. As well, I saw new copies @ a local Target & a KMart recently - IIRC, they were still selling for $50.

MP2 was also my least fave Prime game, although my dislike is far less deep than Mongo's. I did finish it - albeit AFTER MP1 & 3.

I've really been digging Goldeneye - I've gone back & started hacking away @ the SP campaign on higher difficulty (gives you more to do as well as more opportunities to die). Online MP is solid - basically a straight-forward COD-type experience - complete with Perks & whatnot. If you are already doing your COD thing on another console, but like that sort of thing (and want to give Wiimote controls a try), you may dig Goldeneye, too.

I rented Red Steel 2 and was able to beat it within 5 days, so I don't know if it's worth a purchase unless you think you'll replay it or find it at a low price.

I am here to correct a travesty: regardless of the fact that it's on rails, the fact that you don't currently own House Of the Dead: Overkill is nearly unforgivable. Run -today- to the nearest place selling video games and trade them your money for HOTD. Put the kids to bed, grab an adult beverage and prepare to be awesomized.

It's my #1 Wii game for so many reasons... and if on rails doesn't offend you, Dead Space Extraction is also a very good shooter and all around great game.

I started P2 around 2 weeks ago, and everything was better than prime 1. Graphics, contols, the way you loose your power ups... Starts so much better.

Then I got to the the crap. Oh, gods in Olympus, there's so much they forgot to fix. It's just infuriating!

If I have to make a boost ball jump, and there's only one (bad) camera angle available, giving me the ability to choose where in 360 degree space I can land, well, that's poor judgment. Guess where I wanna go? The cracked piece of glass I'm supposed to hit, a-hole! Make it happen since trying 30 times over 3 hours has made me wanna kick retro in the man parts for the 20 additional hours this turd has taken me to beat.

Initially, i was even thinking of a post regarding the great puzzles and expansive world to argue with anyone who didn't like this. No more.

I might finish, I might not. I might not give a s#!t, either.

Screw this game. Kirby was too easy, MP2 was too hard in every way- but it *should* have worked. Screw this game.

I would get Goldeneye 007, it seems like it has some good bang for the buck.

I bought MPT about $50 new a few months ago. It's a really cool collection but I will probably never beat all 3 of them. A few years back I beat every Metal Gear Solid in preparation for MGS4 and I never got close to beating #4. It was just overkill. So just get the third one.

It does - IMO, the online MP is a blast - kinda COD lite, if you will. But finding opponents/teammates has not been a problem & in most cases there appears to be little to no lag (at least in the times I've been online w/ it, inclu. a couple hours of "GoldenEye" mode - i.e - Capture the Flag - last night).

The single player campaing is worth at least a 2nd play-thru - higher difficulties add objectives to the missions - and occasionally will highlight alternate routes/methods for completing the levels.

How about Resident Evil 4? One of my favorite Wii games of all time.

On a related note, I was absolutely p*ssed when they announced RE5 was not coming out for the Wii. It is just not as fun holding a standard controller. Maybe they could redo it for Move/Kinect, that would be fun.

I can see why they didn't release RE5 on the Wii. The new graphics engine can't work on the Wii, so everything will have to be done from scratch. Also, the game's emphasis is on co-op online multiplayer, and nobody was really doing those sorts of games on the Wii at that time.

FWIW I didn't think RE5 was very good at all.

FWIW I didn't think RE5 was very good at all.

IIRC, the producer of RE5 stated that the "title screen" for RE5 was too graphically intense for the Wii to handle, much less the actual game. Fair enough.

Then, when IGN reviewed - or was covering pre-release - RE: Darkside Chronicles & showed screenshots from that game that took place in daylight...and looked A LOT like the African(?) sections of RE5...they wondered "remind us again why no RE5 Wii"?

I for one - after hearing some reviews echo number1laing's opinion on the game....figured maybe it's not such a big loss.

I ended up picking up Metroid 3. I also snagged The Force Unleased I. Wiimote, light sabre, sweet. I know the graphics aren't the best, but force push + light sabre = still sweet. Can't wait to try them both.

Good choices- but a word of caution... And I like FU a lot- my fav Star Wars story in 30 years, hands down- but make sure you have a good nunchuck. I quickly found one of mine to be less reactive (or under-sensitive, if you will), which made some of the later boss battles very tough

Good games, both, and you won't regret either. Until you play HOTD:O, then you'll regret having not played it first

A lot of people have mentioned House of the Dead and while that's a good on-rails shooter, for my money the best on-rails Wii game was Dead Space: Extraction, a prequel to Dead Space for the PS3 and 360.

Very responsive light gun based controls as well as some gesture based actions, minimal waggling, really top notch graphics for a Wii game and a very solid story with some really good voice acting.

It didn't sell well (sadly, most games with a hint of an edge to them seem to flounder on the Wii - another reason I sold mine) but definitely worth a look for anyone after a more serious exeprience.

I played Dead Space on the 360 - my wife made me get rid of it.

Honestly, I'd wake up in the middle of the morning, pulling the covers off the bed, and yelling for her to 'Get out the house'. It was probably scary/comical for her the first time.

After the 3rd time - not so much. I never got to finish the game ....

I think the sound effects in the game more than anything whacked me out. The whispering 'Help me .....' haunts me still !

Listen to this man. DS:E is easily the among the best shooters ever, "on rails" or not. And the sound... Best sound on Wii hands down, man! Get it, today- it's under $15 new- and you'll never regret it... unless you're one of those types that doesn't like playing an interactive kick ass movie thrill ride awesomesauce. A Wii must buy if you're not afraid of scary games or bad words. And you're not afraid of that.

But don't let the kiddies near when playing. Language and whatnot can be a little too much for weaker constitutions. And definitely check out the comics and challenges as they're unlocked, totally expands the game and universe in a way few games can. I totally expect this title to get 1000% more respect in years to come, given the PSMove port, the newDS2 sequel and the pure "survival horror game" love this series has reinvented.. DS:E is just great in every way.

For the record, I fire up the Wii just for HOTD:O and DS:E some weekends, in that order. Unless we're talking just single player campaign, in which case this game gets my #1 every time, even above Galaxy, and HOTD.
Seriously.

-vdz

PS if you like games that rock but were under appreciated, try "Cursed Mountain". It's just fantastic- everything they did was right, despite criticisms about slow pacing. It's another one of those games you play... but by the end you it played you. And it's down to LESS THAN $10 for the limited edition on Amazon. Damn shame, my friends, damn, crying shame.
