I just got a 3ds. How far should I sit holding this thing to get the best 3d effect? And what about the settings for it? cant really tell too much difference. I see the 3d obviously just want to get the most out of it

Just play with it until you find a distance/setting that has no cross talk. It is different for everyone.

I found it took my eyes a little while to get used to the 3D effect, so I started mostly with the slider at the halfway mark (it can vary a bit from game to game) and eventually cranked it up to full for most games (again, it can vary). In the beginning I think I was trying too hard to consciously see the 3D, but I think it's better to just look at the screen normally and let the effect come to your eyes naturally.

does viewing in the dark vs light do anything to the 3d effect?

Not noticably, per se. The real issue is that bright-light can make it hard to see stuff on the 3DS screen, but that's nothing to do with the 3D. I play on the train daily...and the only time I really have a problem is when the sun shines directly on my face in the AM, making my reflection so bright I can't see the game.

Bought one Saturday and it will be returned. The 3d gives me a headache and turning it off defeats having bought one. Nice hardware and the game selection is picking up nicely.
