All things related to the Wii U and the Wii U alone. Please discuss it here.

EDIT: And this forum will not tolerate debates over which system is "better", or who's outselling who. That's fanboy stuff and it will not be tolerated.
People looking to start console wars can look elsewhere.

Thx

May want to add a link to the new thread in the first post and the last post of the old thread. I didn't even notice the lock until I went to the old thread to post some news. (mobile version)

Anyway, Two new demos are up, NBA 2k13 and the big one, ZombiU!

Downloading the ZombiU demo now, 1.6gb download.

Oh, my NNID is Pendragoon

Walking Dead coming to the Wii U.

Looking forward to this in March. Anyone else play it yet on another system? If so, how is it?

It feels weird to have active moderation in the Nintendo forum for once. tongue.gif

I believe the Walking Dead game coming to the Wii U (the FPS, not the adventure game) isn't out on any system yet. I wonder how well it'll do just by virtue of the (smart) decision to base it around the TV show's one consistently likeable character. I just started using the crossbow in ZombiU solely to feel more like Daryl.

I'm a game-play over graphics kind of guy so this still sounds intriguing to me.

"The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct looked likely to appeal to those who enjoy the more cerebral, strategic survival-horror gameplay, which is thoroughly in tune with the nature of the TV series. But there was one obviously sub-standard aspect to the game: its graphics, with a washed-out grey-brown filter applied to ape the TV series' look, were pretty unimpressive. "

After playing the demo of ZombiU, I can say I am not a fan, but I knew it wasn't my type of game going in. I just don't like the slow paced survival games.

Word of warning for those playing the demo, don't die. Seriously, the game will spawn extra zombies in the level you just cleared out as you fight back to your now infected previous body. The game is kinda sadistic about that...

Saw the Deluxe set (and Deluxe sets only) @ the local Costco today - $339.99 - nothing "extra" in the Costco SKU, but $10 cheaper than other places new in box.

It isn't cheaper when you have to pay to walk in the front door.

True - to a point. Then again, I haven't actually paid for a membership since the first renewal years ago when I bumped up to Executive Member level. The rebate check I get every year based on $$ spent has always paid for the yearly renewal & then some. So it would be cheaper for me or a similar Costco member. I assume there are a few of us lurking AVS.

That's fair, it's definitely not for everyone. But to be honest, I'm not a huge survival horror fan myself, and ZombiU really grew on me after the initial frustration/learning curve.

ZL is Nintendo's L2 or LB.

I can definetally see the appeal, I will probably buy it when it hits $20, just not a fan of the genre unless the player character is competent. When more than one Zombie shows up in an open area, you are pretty much screwed, even with guns. (for which ammo is far too rare.)

See, I'd argue that the lack of ammo and your character's general weakness is integral to the whole survival horror genre. It's just played differently than the Rambo-style gaming that is the norm. If multiple zombies show up, no, standing up and fighting won't generally work well. So what you do is run, either to plain escape or to lure them to a more confined area where you can take them on one at a time. Luring them to a place where they'll fall onto the ground (at which point you get a prompt for a one-hit melee kill), such as goading them into crawling over a barrier or through a small hole, works wonders. Or you can throw a flare to distract them, and THEN run, or throw a molotov at them since they're all gathered up nice and tight, or go for easy, ammo-efficient headshots. There's tons you can do to fight multiple zombies, you just have to play smarter and more realistically than in most games. It's not really that the player character is incompetent, he's just not a superhero and then enemies aren't immediate pushovers.

Then again I was also a huge fan of Silent Hill Wii, which was similarly divisive. I mean, in that game, you couldn't fight back AT ALL, and I loved it.

The Gamecube had a Z shoulder button, it is a legacy from that. And even that was based on the N64 Z trgger.

I just got Ninja Gaiden 3 from Gamefly, time to spend some more time with my Wii U after my Mass Effect Trilogy run.

Post your intiial impressions/a quick review once you play some Razor's Edge. I'm tempted to pick it up but want to hear more about it first.

It is a lot better than the original 3 so far, but it is probably the cheapest game I have played since the NES days. Enemies missing a limb will insta grab and blow themselves up. I had it happen up to 3 times in a row with no animation break to dodge (can't block grabs) leading to a gameover.

Bosses are also much cheaper, so many unblockable and hard to dodge area attacks. Sometimes you only have time to slash once before you have to spend a minute dodging again. I only won because somehow button mashing unlocks an invincibility attack that bypasses rocket damage...

I am playing on normal and I haven't even finished level one yet due to the really cheap enemies. I miss Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 where skill actually mattered...

Some Wii U release updates given today:

-Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Mar 19)
-Lego City Undercover (Mar 18)
-Need for Speed Most Wanted (Mar 19)
-Aliens Colonial Marines (Late Feb ~ March)

More nebulous:

-Pikmin 3 (H1)
-Game & Wario (H1)
-Wonderful 100 (H1)

It's not an absolute monster lineup, but I have at least a tangential interest in almost all of those. I've been wanting to try out the Monster Hunter series, which conveniently will have a demo out in late Feb.

Here's an in-depth look at the Wii U's Assassins Creed 3, compared to the other consoles.

tl;dr version:
+/- looks mostly the same,
- occasional minor framerate dips on the Wii U,
+ can be played on the Gamepad only.

Resident Evil Revelations is branching out to from 3DS exclusivity to consoles (incl. Wii U) & PC later this year.

I've heard the 3DS game was great, but I have little interest in a portable RE, so this is great news by me. It's an especially pleasant surprise to see Wii U included in on this. I imagine the other versions will need significant tweaking, but thanks to the touchscreen the Wii U version really should be just a giant HD version of the original.

There's a new Nintendo Direct conference at 9AM EST tomorrow announcing new Wii U games. I'm setting expectations somewhere around the level of "The RE Revelations port will be the centerpiece; plus the vague confirmation of a Mario or Zelda game eventually."

I would also love some Animal Crossing news. Rumoured to be coming to the Wii U.

My daughter would flip. She's been dying to get her hands on the 3DS version.
