Nintendo E3 2015: There's an Amiibo for that

It's starting at noon EST!

Where to watch live (US based):
https://www.youtube.com/user/Nintendo
http://www.twitch.tv/Nintendo
http://live.arstechnica.com/nintendo-at-e3-2015/ (great live blog)

What we know:
Focus on games releasing through early 2016
NO specific talk around NX (Ninty's codename for their new console)
Quality of Life device is still top secret, no discussion or reveal planned

Leaks/Updates:
Hyrule Warriors 3DS leaked earlier this week
Blast Ball: A new IP for Nintnedo, first person sport game.
"Super Mario Maker" has been shown (and is pretty awesome)

VDZ's predictions:
Retro isn't making the Metroid we all want. But they will show a game of some sort
The new Club Nintendo replacement will be talked about in great length, but details will be sparse (aka: politi-speak)
New 3DS eShop will have an HD remaster of (at least one) GCN game
Star Fox is delayed until "sometime in 2016". No one will answer questions about it
Zelda isn't shown during the Digital Event, but potentially will be seen later
WILDCARD: New eShop game is revealed - and will be free for everyone who creates an account in the first 30 days
WILDCARD 2: F-Zero is suddenly announced as a Wii U title. Nerds cry tears of joy, then of sadness when they realize it's a late life cycle release (aka 2017)

Hype!

Zelda TriForce Heroes (a kind of 4 Swords adventure) is showing to 3DS. Multiplayer and CoOp

CoOp your way through puzzles and dungeons
Based on Link Between Worlds visuals
You can carry other players -up to 3- on shoulders like NSMB
Single player has 'dolls' as your other 3 NPC's
A (seemingly) DLC-centric costume and weapon system. Costumes affect player's upgrades and abilities

This is one of the first times I've actually watched an E3 presentation live and...this better have some good stuff in the last half because the first half is super underwhelming.

Yarn Yoshi. Very Kirby's Epic Yarn-esque

Has CoOp play
Can eat and throw other players as an egg. Seriously, just more and more Epic Yarn vibes.

Yo-Kai watch up now. Good to see Nintendo keeping the wacky Japanese stuff going. Not just pandering to the western crowds

What is this? Some kind of Paper Mario vs. 3D Mario minigame collection?

[EDIT]

Mario and Luigi paper jam. "Papercraft" is totally not a ripoff of Minecraft. totally.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash coming to Wii U Holiday 2015. Because we needed more Mario tennis games?

Super Mario Maker started life as (surprise) an internal level designer tool. Neat!

Trailer:

Amiibo fans, just give Nintendo your wallet. 8-Bit Mario Amiibo coming (leaked earlier, it's gigantic), as well as additional playable characters in game based on the current waves of Amiibos. Got a Rosalina? Drop her in the game!

Head to BestBuy.com and see where you (yes, YOU!) can try out Super Mario Maker in person.

Nothing so far, just "3DS" that I've noticed. They might save some of those announcements for the TreeHouse events later this week

So the underlying message of the presentation was "We're working on NX stuff now instead of Wii U."

Don't forget New 3DS! They're not working on that either...

Not their worst showing, but far from the best. More games in 2015 than I thought we'd see, so that's nice, but I'm still curious about Metroid (real Metroid), NX, the new account system, eShop upgrades... just so much that is sadly very much left to rumor. Standard fare for Nintendo fans, I guess.

I don't own one single Amiibo, but I see those being the new underlying focus going forward. It's plastic DLC basically. C'est la vie.

Miyamoto had an encouraging comment during the Star Fox interview with IGN:

Still coming to Wii U, nice to hear they haven't abandoned the console just yet. But "some Zelda footage" means to me that the game is far from ready, or even playable at this point. Launch on both Wii U and NX is seeming inevitable.

...but then he dropped this Star Fox bomb:

"Of course, as we continue on and once people get a feeling for the game... as the process continues if we find that we do think it'd be really good we'll definitely consider it, but right now we're not

I'm only really thinking about getting Star Fox, Super Mario Maker and maybe Yoshi's Wooly World. Nothing else looks good to me (plus I don't own a DS).
But first on my list is an Xbox One. We shall see.

Panasonic 50" Plasma 3D Smart TV

Panasonic Blu-Ray 3D Smart Player

Built HTPC/Gaming PC (i7 860, SSD, GTX 660 Ti+), Xbox 360, Wii, N64, NES

Nokia Lumia 928 WP8.1

That's disappointing (though not surprising) about the single-player focus for Starfox. But even though it was pretty bare-bones, I got a lot of fun out of the competitive multiplayer in the N64 version. Since I'm not really a high-score type of player, the multiplayer really extended my time with the game a hundredfold.

Just quickly looked at a summary. Pretty disappointing looking. But I'm still looking forward to the same Wii U games that I was before (Zelda, Fatal Frame, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Super Mario Maker), even if nothing new has been added. And Zelda U being reconfirmed for the Wii U is nice.

Where was Retro Studios?

Where is the new Mario Kart 8 DLC?

And Wii U doesn't even at least get a surprise remaster like another Wind Waker HD?

Not even a Nintendo Selects line to get stuff like Ocarina of Time 3D and Pikmin 3 back on store shelves at budget prices?

Does this have a single player mode like they added to the Four Swords port to the DSi/3DS?

Speaking of that limited time digital exclusive that's currently unavailable, I hope they add that to this rather underwhelming package as an extra.

Disappointed that with such an underwhelming revival of the Metroid franchise, that they couldn't even be bothered to at least include a 3D Classics conversion of Super Metroid to round out the package

Since that program started, Super Metroid seems to have been the most requested Nintendo classic. Yet it remains unavailable on the 3DS (Actually, a 3D Classics conversion of Link to the Past would also be a nice companion to Triforce Heroes as well, since I've seen a lot of requests for that as well).

Star Fox U looks too much like Star Fox 64. That surely will please many, but I hated the voicework (Fox sounds just like he did back in 1997... give me my animal voices back). And the soundtrack paled against that amazing and epic Koji Kondo soundtrack that the original had back in 1993 that almost sounded orchestrated despite running on the SuperNes hardware.

Star Fox 64 on the other hand just sounded like typical videogame music. Nothing bad about it, but nothing memorable about its soundtrack, either.

Clever use of the gamepad is at least confirmed as not happening. Doesn't look like it brings anything special to the table. Rather, it looks to only threaten it since even in the trailer, it doesn't look like it really fits or works well. Hopefully one can fully enjoy it on their tv, with traditional controls throughout.

With Earthbound Zero hitting the Virtual Console yesterday, I hope they take this opportunity to emulate the Super FX chip, and bring the two SuperNes classics to the Wii U in conjunction with this later this year (Star Fox 2 was finished, but of course, never released).

I could get behind that.

Yeah, same here. I was super disappointed to see no "real" Metroid game in the works.

Yes, they described it as single-player mode allowing you to switch from Link to your helper 'dolls' if playing solo.

The SNES Starfox soundtrack is pretty amazing, but I have a soft spot for certain tracks on the N64 version too. I still kinda get chills hearing "Can't let you do that, Star Fox!" as the Star Wolf team flies in, and same with Peppy going "This...is Zoness?" as the music crescendoes. Yeah, the voice acting is undeniably cheesy as hell for the most part, but given that we're talking about a videogame about anthropomorphic animals flying starfighters I have a hard time arguing it's not fitting.

Engadget posted an interview with Kensuke Tanabe (Nintendo game designer from Prime). Pretty insightful- but still leaves a lot in limbo for the Metroid franchise. He also mentions the game was designed for the New 3DS, but didn't go so far as calling it exclusive to the device.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/06/17/m...e-for-the-new/

I'll admit, I thought at the start that it might lose the seriousness of the Metroid Prime series and become a little comical, but once I played it, I believe it delivers on the feel of the other game."

And another interesting nugget, possibly hinting to us that Wii U won't get a new Metroid at all?

However, we had to consider the resources it would take, what teams to devote for a Wii U game."

While I prefer the animal voices of the original, I think what really did Star Fox 64 in for me, was the dialogue from the bosses rather than from the Star Fox team.

Hopefully the bosses don't talk in Star Fox Zero or whatever it's been labeled as, since it really was pretty awful back in 1997.

Hey whaddya know, Zelda Tri Force actually has online multiplayer. It does not, however, have voice chat, which shouldn't even be a surprise at this point.

I hope the soundtrack is better than the video that I watched. It sounded very un-Zeldalike in the direct feed gameplay video I viewed.

I have my doubts, but I enjoyed Four Swords Adventures solo on the GameCube. So I'll be keeping an open mind, even though it's not my first choice for what I hoped to see out of E3.

For those of us still wondering, Metroid is now officially not coming to Wii U, Tanabe confirmed that in an interview with eurogamer:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...y-now-be-on-nx

So Zelda U is basically Wii U's swansong...

On one hand I'm disappointed, I want to see an HD Metroid sooner rather than later, but on the other hand my distaste for what I suspect would have been forced use of the gamepad is well documented. Still, a bummer.

I think we realized that long ago though.

The big question is if new hardware happens next Fall, or 2017 (And if Zelda U is an exclusive, or been held back for another Twilight Princess style deal). I personally subscribe to Fall 2016 for new hardware introductions and believe that Zelda U has been strategically delayed for a repeat of the Twilight Princess situation from the last time around.

The 3DS market is pretty weak these days and hasn't seen much of a boost from the New 3DS introduction, it gives the Wii U 4/5th's of the typical Nintendo console lifespan, and it has seemed clear for quite sometime that the development focus was squarely on next-gen projects. Difficult for me to buy into new hardware being possibly more than two years away at this time.

We've only been getting AAA projects that were long ago announced along with titles with much smaller scopes to prop up their lineups. I think Yoshi's Woolly World's announcement even predates the Wii U's launch, for an example of how early in advance they've been announcing Wii U titles this generation (And X, if it doesn't predate the Wii U's release, at least comes pretty close to predating the release of the Wii U).

Only Wind Waker HD seemed to go from announcement to release in a matter of a few months it seems (And as neat as it was, that was only a remastered game from ten years ago). Even Super Mario Maker, the type of project you'd typically of seen Nintendo announce and bring to fruition in under a year, saw its 2nd E3 this year and is still a summer away from reaching our hands.

I think if there was another major 1st party Wii U release in the pipeline besides Zelda, we'd of known about it quite sometime ago. It wouldn't be to their benefit or the Wii U's to have kept it under cover when it could be selling consoles like the promise of Zelda U likely has been responsible for selling a fair number of.
