Hey everyone - about how many hours will it take to beat RE4 for the Wii? I'm loving it so far (admittedly, only about 2 hours in) and am curious how the length of RE4 compares with other horror/adventure games. Thanks.

Took me about 22 hours, save time wise, good bit longer counting deaths, got get through the GC version. But I suck at these type of games and died A LOT.

At the end of the game it says how long and I remember clocking in at 22 hours also. Worth every minute.

Just beat Halo 3 on the 360 (been Halo man since 1) and RE:4 was much more fun to me and Halo 3 was a blast. RE:4 is amazing!!

Wow. I've crossed the 4 hour mark, thinking this would be your standard 10-12 hour gigs. 22 hours will make for a very solid storyline. As it is, I'm in the village (if there are other maps, I don't know about them yet) and just killed the lake monster. I know that a beast named "El Gigante" has been unleashed but I haven't seen him yet. Sounds like I have a ton more to go.

Still, I'm loving it as well. Great game!

During my very first play through on the 'Cube, easily 20 hours. A good but somewhat flawed game.

If you don't mind my asking, why do you think the game is flawed?

You're still at the very beginning. You've got lots and lots of great stuff ahead of you!

For me, at least with the GC version, I still didn't care much for the controls. Better than the old game, but just still felt stiff and clunky. Especially with them giving you a ton of weapons and ammo and making it more of an action game than a survival horror game.

Part of the problem for me was I played it after playing Gears of War which had the best controls I've ever used for a third person shooter, so it just made RE4s controls feel like **** to me.

The difficulty can be a bit uneven sometimes, be easy for a long time, then get to a super hard stretch. But the difficulty does scale sometimes if you keep dying and continuing in the same room, sometimes a bigger monster won't appear and will be replaced with a couple of normal enemies etc. That only happened in a couple places for me.

And my other gripe was the length, it drug on a bit too long for me and I was at that point were I was relieved it was over when I finally finished it. But that's probably not valid if you're totally digging the game.

Don't forget, after completing the game you have the Aida missions! Those are missions you carry out as the chic in the game. Everytime you saw her while playing Leon is a mission you can play as well as the times things happened that save your butt. Like when the town was beating down on you and the church bell rings. That was the chic and you can play the mission. Kinda cool to see how the same game plays out as her. Obviously shorter.

You have a ways to go. Enjoy it, it was a blast.

1. The controls. While the camera angle has changed, the controls essentially remained the same. The character is still moved in a tank-like, point-in-direction-before-moving fashion.

2. No strafe firing. I don't think games should be uber realistic but come on, if I were facing down a mob of bloodthirsty parasite infested villagers with only a pea shooter handgun, you're darn skippy I would move and shoot instead of just staying still.

3. Camera angle. The over the shoulder view is improved from the fixed camera angles of the past but when Leon draws his gun, visibility on the left side is diminished.

4. The story. It's pathetically bad.

5. Ashley. RE4 is essentially a 75% escort mission game.

Don't get me wrong, RE4 is a great game, just not a high 9s to 10s game. I'd give it a solid 8.5-9.0.

Interesting. Thanks for the input. I haven't actually rescued Ashley yet but I take your point about escort missions. I hate those, especially when the AI of the escort is awful.

I'll see how it plays out, I guess. Again, thanks for the response.

Yeah, there's quite a few times you're are escorting here. Thankfully you can often just have her hide in a box or something until it's safe.

About 20 hours the first time, can't remember the other three times. But after you beat it you get to play Aida's 5 side-chapters which will eat up another few hours and the Operation Aida side-chapter thingy that will probably take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

I didn't mind the controls, I thought they set it apart nicely instead of making it feel like a run and gun action game. Escorting Ashley isn't really that bad, I honestly can't think of one time she really made any given part particularly difficult.

But yea easily one of the top ten games of last gen, I'd love to try it on the Wii but motion controls aren't enough to bring me back with all the new games in my future.

It took me around 20 hours the first time through, but I kinda rushed through it...running everywhere and not exploring the different buildings/pathways.. The second time through, I took my sweet time, explored every nook and cranny, and killed everything. It took around 25 hours.

It is much more enjoyable if you take your time...don't rush.

I just played it again on the Wii and also played the two Aida side quests. Counting those it was probably just under 30 hours. I definitely found the difficulty level to be much easier (and therefore MUCH less frustrating) on the Wii than on the GC just because of the controls. As a result, I had much more fun with the game on the Wii than I did on the GC. Not saying I didn't enjoy it on the GC originally, but sometimes it would really irritate me, especially during the uber-long escort mission. This time around the controls made it much more enjoyable.

Great game that will take you around 20-22 hours. I prefer playing it a couple more times through to get all of the special weapons. But, once you get the Chicago Typewriter Gun, the game will not take you to long anymore.

Well I'm about 17 hours in, and it looks like everyone's predictions of 20-22 hours is going to be spot on. I'm on Chapter 5-1 but pretty far advanced through it (I'm guessing) and I think it's reasonable to assume 3-4 more hours left until the game is over.

Definitely a great length for an action/shooter game. This was a Gamefly rental for me so I won't bother with the extra missions/weapons - I want to get Metroid Prime - but definitely worth the time and energy. Very happy with this game overall.

Although I agree with what someone said earlier - the dialogue and story are pretty ridiculous. Still, pretty fun though. And Ashley so far hasn't proven to be a liability.

Anyway thanks again to everyone. If only I could take off work and just finish it up...

Are the Nintendo forums really so dead that we're resurrecting threads that have been dead for five years? Oh, wait, I get it. Resident Evil. Zombies. Resurrected thread. Huh.
