Article

This is the most in depth article we've seen on DA:O gameplay so far. From the looks of things this could be a contender for game of the year. While not a Microsoft for Windows game, It even has a PC specific achievement system:
Quote:

Speaking of achievements, no modern video game seems to be without them, and Dragon Age: Origins isn't going to be putting a stop to that phenomenon. There are over 150 achievements in the PC version (though the console versions are capped at 50), and these range from picking your first lock to finishing particular elements of the storyline. The game doesn't support Games For Windows Live, however, so these achievements won't be inflating your Gamerscore on anything but the Xbox 360. In fact, they won't even be adding in-game bonuses like we experienced with Mass Effect. Instead, they're only meant to give us a sense of accomplishment and to give us something to parade about on our own little Dragon Age: Origins social page.

Yeah, you read that right. Details are scarce, but based on what we know so far, each of us is going to have a small profile page of our own on the community website BioWare is building for the game. The idea here is to chronicle our hero's journey - achievements, quest updates, and even screenshots of difficult adversaries we defeat during our travels will automatically be uploaded to our personal DA:O page. BioWare will also be hosting fan-created campaigns and other assets on the website, so it'll be very interesting to see how this all ties together and, ultimately, how popular the service will be during the months and even years following the game's release.

Very interesting...

I've mentioned this game to a couple gamer friends lately and they have never heard of it. This game has been huge to me since it was announced.

This 'should' be the best and biggest RPG since Oblivion, in my book...

This is the game I upgraded my machine for...just need a GT300 card now...

Doubtful. Supposedly the PC version has been done for well over a year, just held back for simultaneous console release. In the meantime, hopefully they've been working on it. It will take advantage of quad-cpus if you have them though.

Yeah, I saw that, eh. That will occupy a whole 5mins of my time. Their logic is it will be a good benchmark tool, I suppose so...

Amazon is still offering a $10GC with the standard edition.

Now available HERE.

This is pretty cool. It is clearly linked from the PC version of the game to Bioware's website, and you can upload/compare characters with other people's. As posted earlier, I'm sure it will continue with is just the beginning, as it can get much deeper into aspects of the game, like "most bloodthirsty player" etc, etc.

In case anyone missed it, the boys at GiantBomb did a 20 min Quick Look of Dragon Age.

The gameplay gave me Baulder's Gate flashbacks immediately. Dragon Age's design foundation is very old school but has lots of modern features and tweaks. The extent to which your characters battle AI can be tweaked looked incredible. I can see myself having fun coming up with the best conditionals to give my characters some autonomy.

PC is clearly the platform to play Dragon Age on. My ego wishes it supported Games For Windows Live but I can't even imagine what the interface will be like on the consoles.

I love how you can have your player's progress automatically load to the website so you can compare with other people's. This is an awesome feature (and makes me wonder why noone's ever thought of it before?).

Yeah, it's like Baldur's Gate except for some reason this time around they decided not to go the D&D route so they could be more flexible. Frankly I wouldn't know the difference (I read the Drzzzt Black Elf stuff mostly, and could care less either way).

My copy from Amazon shipped.

Here's a pretty good article from one of my favorite sites PCGamesHardware on what kind of system you'll need to run it properly. Seems this one is more CPU than GPU intensive.

Amazon sent me the email on Sunday stating that it's been shipped. But I too am playing Borderlands, so this won't get played until a little bit down the road.

And Tinker, why would you think that you'll be able to play a third party game on Steam as soon as it's released? That's not the way they operate.

If you did a pre-load and it says you can't start, try quitting and restarting Steam.

Mine just arrived from Amazon. Amazing that with free shipping it arrives on day of release and I don't need to pay extra. Arkham Asylum also arrived on "day of". BTW, it says on the back of the box that I get free DLC mission? Thought I was going to have to pay $7 for that...

I have no idea how to get the bonus rings from the pre.

The controls are the same as some games like Oblivion. So having to get to use to them is going to a take a while. Normal level is pretty tough right now for me since the controls are new to me.

I think there's more than one DLC... but if you buy the CE on Steam or whatever you get all the DLC for free to make up for the lack of a cloth map or whatever.

It's a mess. Forza 3 was like that too. Games nowadays are packing in release day DLC to discourage used sales, but they are also throwing in preorder bonus DLC, collector's edition DLC, day one paid for DLC, and just pushing it out there and doing a terrible job of explaining what is what and what you get for your money.

I want to get this game. I was looking at the 360 version but I hear it plays very different from the PC one due to controls and what not. But I really don't want to buy another PC game I'll never play.

Stone Prisoner is free to Collector's Edition retail users but Warden's Keep you have to pay for.

All the DLC is free for Steam CE users to make up for the extras they can't download - map, case etc.

I'm loving it. That high up isometric view just gives me the SSI gold box willies :P

Runs pretty well on my system, the 8800GT is still holding up.

The PC game was done 6 months ago and delayed for the console versions, that is why there is all this DLC now available.

What is up with pets in fantasy RPGs? Fable 2, Fallout 3, Torchlight, and now Dragon Age.

Anyone hearing 5.1 in this game?

I ran through a few minutes of the game yesterday but could only hear stereo with Win7 and an X-Fi card.

Thanks. I'm thinking it has to be an X-Fi driver/Alchemy issue. I'll switch over to the onboard to see if I can narrow down the cause now I know that the audio is there.
