They need to test at very high resolutions. Why else run a 4x SLI 480? I bet my u2711 would take advantage of it (my single GTX 295 is straining to run some newer games @ 2560x1440).

Reviews like this on SLI GTX480's almost, well, makes me think a little about it anyway on hopping on the wagon. But really its not going to give me anything in the a meaningful way over what I am running now with crossfireX 5870's for most games. I just wish ATi can get their CCC working all the the time and better driver support. CCC is such a flaky app (POS). It almost makes me want to dump the ATi cards and go back to Nvidia.

Rem Guru3d has been a pro Nvidia site in the past.

The Galaxy GTX 470 with flip-down fan appears to be a very nice card. It is quieter (most important for me), cooler and much easier to clean than the reference design.

I am just wondering how well the Fermi's are selling. NCIX had 12 GTX470's in their mom's day sale and they sold 2 (updated: they sold 6 as of Mon)...while they sold out of the 5870's. I am hoping rev 2 of the Fermi will be better then the current versions...thats if there will be an R2 down the line.

I've got a single 470 in my PC now with an 8800GT doing Physx work. It does run hotter, and the fan runs faster than the 5870 I had, but it has a lower pitch to my ears, making it less annoying than either my old setup (2 8800GT SLI) or the 5870 I had for 2 weeks. I've had the 470 for a week, and so far am loving it. The GPU water alone in Just Cause 2 is worth it, its so pretty

So, do you find the 470 slightly slower than the 5870? The reason I ask is because I have two pc's. My main pc has a 275 in it right now, and my secondary has a 8800gt. I really would like to upgrade the 275 (to DX11), but I'm not sure it is worth it unless I go to at least a 5870, which seems a little pricey. The 470's are more im my ball park. If I upgrade my main pc, I would put the 275 in my secondary pc. Then I would have that extra 8800gt card, now you can see why your post catches my attention with possibly combining a 8800 & a 470. Not sure this would be worth it???

Whether its worth it or not depends on how much money you have Its been kind of strange going from the 5870 to the 470, I only played 2 games with the 5870 (Metro 2033 and Just Cause 2). Metro definitely plays slightly better on the 470, and JC 2 is kind of a mystery. It definitely benchmarked higher with the 5870, but I find the gameplay to be better with the 470, I got a little bit of stuttering/surging with SSAO turned on with the 5870, which I don't get with the 470.

I went 470 instead of 480 with the intention of doing SLI in a little while, my PSU will not handle two 480's, nor will my wallet

257Tony,

Thanks! I've had many ATI & NVIDEA cards over the years, but I do have a slight preference for NVIDEA ( better drivers ), and the 470 hits my price sweet spot. I agree 480 is really out of my budget, these things become obsolete too quickly for $500+ cards for me. The ironic thing I got my 275 for $199 a while back, and today it is worth more if you can find one.

My EVGA 470 GTX qualifies for a step-up to the 480 GTX. All I have to pay is the price difference. I think I may do it. I'll wait until the last 30 days though, in case another card (dual GPU) appears.

The overclocked 480's don't qualify for the step-up.

I'd probably pick up a GT490 dual-gpu board based on a GF104 chip.

Glad I bought the EVGA. If they kill the 470 I'll probably step up to the 480 and call it good.

Why? The GF104 chips should be the one to get, not the current GF100 platform.

If they come out before my step up runs out then that's what I'll do, I got 68 days left

I've got the same 68 days left and have a 470 Superclock. What if they kill off the 470 and you wanted to go SLI down the road? Will the 104 chips run cooler? I was thinking about using the step up and go to a 480 but if something better is coming I may use up all of those 68 days and see what gives.

That's what I'm waiting to see. If the rumors look to be about the 470 getting axed, then I'll step up to whatever is the next best thing at the end of my step up period.

The GF104 chips will indeed use approx 1/3 less power than the GF100 platform but the cards won't be available until the end of the year.

This is why I will step up to a 480 if they kill the 470, I'm not going to take the $$ hit to sell my 470 used when I can upgrade to a 480 for $150.

EVGA just came out with a new 470 with a different back plate and end plate that provide better cooling. Word is you will be able to buy the parts and add them to your 470 if you so desire.

Do we believe this will allow us to put a PhysX card in the slot next to it without the fan noise quadrupling?

I had my 8800GT next to mine for a while and didn't notice any real increase. Of course I only had it in there for a couple days, and wasn't really looking for it.

I had a GTS 250 and mine went bonkers. The GTS 250 is extra wide, not sure about the 8800 GT. I moved it to the slot for the SLI card for the moment.

The 8800GT is a single slot width, maybe that helped. Does your mobo have 3 PCI-E slots? You could always drop it to the bottom slot for extra space.
