My interview with Lead Programmer Fredrik Larsson and Game Designer Peter Johansson has gone live! A few examples of some questions I asked: What other Easter-eggs exist beyond the Lost island reference? Were fully destructible structures ever considered? Will Just Cause 2 ever end up on the Wii? How does the Heat system really work? Why on earth can't we purchase multiple items from the Black Market?

It's a good read.

______________________________________
I've spent a good 20 hours with the game and am writing something up, but for now I wanted to make sure everyone playing the game on the PC gets this fix.

Some (most) of you might experience some control issues--as soon as you fire up the game up the only device that works is the mouse. If you have this issue here is what you have to do to resolve it.

Follow these steps exactly:

1) Load up the game and--using the mouse--go to Settings.
2) Then 'Keyboard/Mouse Options'.
3) 'Key Mapping'.
4) Click 'Set to Default' (you must click this specific entry for 'Set to Default' because the other entries don't work. You will be prompted to confirm "Set Keymap to Default?" Click Yes.
6) Now click on the little 'X' in the upper right-hand corner of the options window. This will bring you back to the previous menu.
7) Now click on 'Accept Changes'. You should get a red window saying informing you that it's "Saving".

You should be able to use your KB and Gamepad. Keep in mind--and this is the worst part--that everytime you exit the game and load it you have to do this since the settings don't stick. This includes the video settings(!).

Let's hope it's just the pre-release version I was playing and doesnt effect the final version being released today (although PR told me I have the final code unfortunately). Perhaps a patch will be released soon since PR set me words over to Avalanche.

Chime in and let us know if this affects you!

The settings seem to work in the version I got from steam last night. I use a gamepad though. Fun game.

I've had the same experience as MarkcusD regarding the settings. And I'm also using a 360 gamepad. Freefalling, parachute gliding and helicopters feel much better with 2 analog sticks.

This game should have a "I don't give a damn about the lame story" switch. The cutscenes and some of the voice acting is just painful. It's an enormous playground, just give me my toys and shut it. And on that note, I will be using cheat mods with this game. Just Cause is just about craziness for me, and I want things that go boom cheap.

This game makes me want to get a capture card, because some of the things that happened tonight I'd love to watch again.

And there are moments in this game that are simply beautiful. I was stunt riding a jet over a snow covered mountain just as the Sun was breaking the horizon. It was a gorgeous scene.

If on the PC why not use FRAPS for caps.

I haven't used FRAPS in years but when I did I remember it hitting my performance pretty noticeably. Of course I've built a new machine since so I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

While I understand your potential frustration I do not share your sadness. XP was launched in 2001 and has given us all many years of service, but it is time for it to go away. I see any extra effort spent by a developer to support it as wasted. Avalanche made the right call and I hope others follow suit.

The argument that it would have cost significantly more to develop a DX9 codepath simply doesn't fly. The hi/midlevel code-stream for the game would be identical, with an alternate set of API calls to support DX9. For an experienced development team it would be childs play. This is espcially so given the game is also coming out for the 360 and notably the PS3 -which like all games, would have been the biggest challenge to develop for due to the fragmented cell cpu and memory design.

Noting the age of XP as if this alone is justification for abandoning it also doesn't fly. XP is not hardware, it's software, and to this day still receives regular updates, including 3 major service packs. It is a different product to the Windows XP that came out on launch day. I've checked a number of benchmarks comparing XP to Vista and Win7 and it still wins on most of them. In fact MS could very easily have added DX11 support to XP but for obvious financial reasons would prefer you to buy a whole new O/S. I don't blame them for that, but I'm not inclined to appreciate being pushed into it just because I happen to be a gamer.

It's equally understandable that those who have upgraded to Win7 either don't care or think it's great news that a game has been launched without WinXP support, but the lack of support is an obvious attempt to artificially push users over to Win7 rather than an indication that there's no money to be made by making the game avaialble to XP as well. I just think that those who are OK still playing the game in DX9 on an older system should have that option. They will still have a reason to upgrade as the'll get DX11 support when they do.

Every dog has it's day and Win7 actually looks like a good product, so I think it should be able to stand on it's own feet without having to cut legacy support for XP in order to force our wallets open. I think it would be naive to think that MS has not had a big (financial) hand in the decision for Just Cause 2 to drop support for XP. Remember they also made Halo 2 Vista only and that was a bogus limitation with XP cracks coming out shortly afterwards.

I should mention, I'm buying parts right now for a complete system upgrade of my gaming rig. I'll almost certainly install Win7 when I've finished picking up all the parts, but that doesn't change my opinion that legacy support for XP still makes financial sense for game developers, and will do for probably another couple of years.

I can honestly say that I've never had so much fun blowing stuff up in a game. The sounds of the explosions are top-notch.

There have been numerous times when my fear of heights was manifested by grappling onto very high structures and looking down.

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm gonna get this for the pc or the 360. If I'm gonna be playing with thr 360 pad, it would make sence to sit in front of the 67" instead of the 24"
I just dl'd the demo on steam and I guess I'll see how she goes. looks fun!

Well after playing both versions, I think I'm not gonna get either. I'm not a fan of the controls and it's just not really my cup of tea. I'll get if when it comes down to $29.99.

Try it with the BOLOPatch. Having infinite ropes that never break makes it so awesome. I really have to start vid capping because the insanity I've caused must be seen. Makes me think Avalanche really missed out by not including upgrades for the grappling hook in the real game.

Anyways, 10 hours of game time and loving it!!

I don't bother with mods (especially on a game that is so long) because I don't think you will qualify for the leaderboards or gain achievements once you apply them.

Plenty to keep me occupied here without the mods.

I'm not a fan of the controls when using the 360 controller. I'm probably in the minority, but I find a mouse and keyboard to be much better for this particular game.

360 controller is good with the PC version. Rumble really helps. It's exactly the same as the 360 version. Whatever your cup of tea is I guess. I just have a floaty analog stick, makes it hard to target stuff accurately.

I scored an interview with George Wright (Associate Producer, Avalanche Studios) and should be conducted it tomorrow. Is there anything you guys would like me to ask him in regards to the game? Curious design decisions? Technical aspects? Gameplay?

Awesome, should be fun. I have a couple thoughts:

1) For a game that has the character on land or in the air for 95% of the time I'm continually amazed at the detail and beauty of Just Cause 2 beneath the waves. What prompted Avalanche to put so much effort into the sea?

2) Was an upgrade path for the grappling hook and parachute considered and why wasn't it included in the game?

3) What specifically facilitated your decision not to support Windows XP?

Ask why they didn't just use fully regenerating health. Health stations feel like something from the 90's. Other than that it's a fun game.

Also what are they planning for DLC?

Damn, this game is fun! i was literally LOL'ing all night last night tying stuff to choppers and trying to fly it around. Who needs a story when you have such awesome vehicles and a grappling hook! The game looks great, even on my older setup, and runs very smooth. Also plays great with the 360 controller.
