Finally a reprieve.

The only game today I'd be interested in is one I own already- Mafia 2.

Primarily, it was just a bit too open, with not enough guidance as to what to do next.

Yeah I played the single player when it first came out. If it wasnt for the AI constantly spawning and shooting u on sight..it would have been great. I purchased the game to try out the multiplayer. Think today I am going to pickup Company of Heroes. Need an RTS game in my steam collection. Half Life collection looks tempting. 85% off if you have L4D..which I do. Like to play through HL1 as I beat the 2nd one. Steam sale needs to end already, spending too much

I enjoyed FC2, played it to the finish.

Yes, some of it was quite repetitive, but I played in 30 minute blocks.

Got around to playing Doom 3 today. The animation and character modeling is pretty dated, but the level design, world texturing, and lighting is still fantastic. The flashlight -or- weapon mechanic is still really unique, adding a specific tension to the game that is pretty hard to find in it's peers.

If you never got around to playing Doom 3, then I'd say it's a title to keep in mind the next time it comes around for less than $10. It takes 3 minutes of configuration tweaking to get it to run on modern widescreen hardware, but it's not complicated in the slightest.

Well said DLJ.

For some reason, Doom 3 is an oft-maligned game, but I think it's the best example of a corridor shooter. Many disparage the weapon-or-flashlight technique, ruining this brilliant gameplay mechanic with the duct-tape mod. Also, the "monster lockers" and the linear, on-rails nature of the keycard system often get slammed, but that's Doom - just like number first and second game, which are universally loved!

I agree the pointy-headed character models and the menu resolution do feel dated, though. I wonder how hard it would be for id to update or "remix" the game engine with improved surround sound, character models, selectable modern screen resolutions and menus? I would re-purchase this game+expansion again!

Sub-1080p/60fps is not next-gen.

Another thing I like about Doom 3 and its expansion is that the in-game email system rewards you with many comical messages if you take the time to read them. The developers obviously have a good sense of humor.

The two games greatly benefit from EAX audio effects as they are implemented. It adds even more to the scary and tense ambiance.

Reading through my copy of Making Of Doom 3, I remember that this title was made right as normal mapping was being used. As such, the base models are extremely high poly count, but then down-sampled to appropriate resolutions for a 2003 PC or an Xbox 1. A normal map is then built out of the lost detail and reapplied to the lower poly in-game model. One would hope that all of the original models are still sitting on id's servers somewhere.

Porting the audio to a modern Vista/7 "wad of raw channels" audio system would be trivial. Hell, it was even the original design until though douchebags at Creative came along. "Hey, remember that programming technique that you single handedly developed back in the Quake 2 days, Mr. Carmack? Yeah, we hold the patent on that now, 5 years later. Put EAX in your game or we're taking you to court."

One would hope that we'll see a treatment like the modern version of Stranger's Wrath out of Doom 3.

Yeah I picked it up also. Played the tutorials and seems like it will be a good game. 9 gigs, was wondering why it was taking so long to download.lol thought it was just the Steam servers being hammered from all the downloading.

$119 here, including the Humble Indie Bundle that I activated on Steam.

Oblivion
Amnesia
The Ball
Dead Space
Doom pack
Crysis pack
Simcity 4
King's Bounty
Humble Bundle 1+2
The Witcher
Winterbottom
Polymnomial
Burnout Paradise
OddBoxx
Bad Company 2

Plus I gifted out a copy of Portal and Team Fortress 2. I'm tempted to spend the $5 on Stalker 3, but I know that will come back around later and I need to try out Stalker 1 first.

My total for the Christmas sale was $81.01 for what I purchased for myself.

Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars
Dead Space
Doom Pack
Rush
Counter-Strike: Source
All 4 Borderlands DLC
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Day of Defeat: Source
Aliens vs Predator
Puzzle Quest
Burnout Paradise
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Super Meat Boy

I gifted the Borderlands DLC to my brother also, so my overall Christmas sale total was $100.97

Was anyone else that bought Burnout disappointed to find out it doesn't have the Big Surf Island expansion that the consoles got? I should have researched the game better before I purchased it.

Okay, what the hell? I picked up the OddBoxx containing Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. It is very simply just the Xbox 1 version running at nicer resolutions. It is even locked to 4:3, until you hop in and manually edit a config file. Seriously, in a 2010 release? After seeing months of data regarding the completely rebuilt PS3 version that is coming to PSN, I thought that this was going to be the same thing. I was wrong and I guess that's what I get for not paying attention.

Okay. I guess I get to wait another couple of months for the PSN version before finally playing the last Oddworld game.

Moral of the story regarding the last two posts? Hop in to the Steam Forum for potential titles before clicking the Buy button. Dissatisfaction regarding what I title actually is I'm sure is to rapidly rise to the top.

Dirt 2
SimCity 4
VVVVVV

I love when people post their hauls. Makes me feel better when I spent less than everyone else lol. I still have games from last year's sales to play, so I was very picky.

Oblivion - $13
Overlord Pack - $3
Company of Heroes - $2.50
Bad Company 2 - $7
Star Wars Bundle - $5

Total ~ $30.50

That's the same thing I thought. After playing the game, I looked on the forums and found out Criterion never released Big Surf Island for the PC.

Those of you who paid for the indie bundle, Recettear is an absolute gem (I bought it at full price when it launched).

BTW, I very little for the recent sale, but coupled with the Steam treasure hunt (where I got Chime and Just Cause 2), I spent about $20 in all for December.

Los Angeles Lakers - 16 NBA Championships!

2K Complete Pack
Amnesia
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Back to the Future
Burnout Paradise
Crysis Pack
Far Cry 2
Flight Control HD
Indie Beat Pack
Left 4 Dead Pack
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
Super Meat Boy

The 2k complete pack was pretty expensive, but for $80 I got Bioshock 1 & 2 (rented 1 but quit before I got very far in it), Borderlands plus all DLC, NBA2k11, Mafia (a favorite in the past, that I have to admit I got in my not paying for PC games stage), Mafia 2, Civ 3 and 4, and a bunch of other games.

I already played Batman, Burnout, and Left 4 Dead on the 360, but no longer have any of them, don't pay for Xbox Live anymore, and also they're games that are compatible with the Tridef 3D drivers to be able to play them in stereoscopic 3D, so I didn't really feel bad about getting them. Having stereoscopic 3D support is part of why I was interested in so many of the games in that 2K pack as well, so it should work out well.

Burnout, for one, looks really awesome in 3D, haven't tried anything else yet.

Not only that, even if you wanted to buy the cars packs, you can't because the Burnout store hasn't been up for a year.

Kind of ridiculous that they don't mention that on the Steam store page, in my opinion.

I mean, the page says: "Players can also keep up to date with all the latest news and developments through the new Criterion Games Network and get the latest new game updates from the in game Burnout Store."

Except the Criterion Games Network and Burnout Store don't exist anymore, so it's sort of false advertising. It's still a great game, but it's really a shameful way to handle DLC, really.
