Due August 23rd in the US along with the console variants, the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution has some DirectX 11 features and optimizations. There are also optimizations for multi-core CPUs, Eyefinity and 3D.

Making the game even half as enjoyable as the original Deus Ex is another matter.

I never touched the original. How does it run on Windows 7?

Does it feel extremely dated?

I played through the original in its entirety on a Vista 64-bit machine. I did not encounter a single glitch or crash. In fact, that makes for a more stable experience than when I played the game at around its time of release.

The usual, simple Unreal Engine .ini tweaks are all that is necessary for proper widescreen resolutions and FOVs. Engage supersamling anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering, and the game's visuals are more than serviceable.

The gameplay is definitely not dated. As far as I'm concerned, the game's mechanics and balance is perfect.

As a retired and now renewed pc gamer I do not know of these .ini modifications you speak of! Any links?

I'm interested in getting the original but I've had some issues running the older games I've picked up on Steam in Win7.

Widescreen Gaming Forum is a great site for such information. Some of the older games you can't get to work might have a source port or known modification to get them running on a modern machine. You should be good with Deus Ex.

What games in particular do you have problems with?

Doom 3 in particular, my tv switches to just display the blank hdmi screen as if it's not receiving the signal.

I picked up the sims 3 and had the same issue but I was able to iron it out.

Quake Wars and battlefield 2 are a couple of others.

It's nice that they're adding multi-monitor and 3D support but that doesn't mean the game will be any good. The PC version so far looks nothing more than a console port.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

It looks like your display is receiving an unsupported resolution.

Doom 3 and Quake Wars both run on the id Tech 4 engine. Follow these instructions to force Doom 3 to output your display's native resolution, and follow the same logic for Quake Wars.

As for Battlefield 2, try this command line edit method to force your display's native resolution. You can add command line scripts via a Steam-linked executable by right-clicking the listed game, going to properties and selecting "set launch options."

Did you have any problem with the game running too fast? I remember trying it out on a dual core system a few years ago and never got it quite right.

Anyway I've been following all the Deus Ex 3 updates and I'm quite excited about it. The team seems to be recapturing the spirit of the original game pretty well.

I remember reading a while back that the game moves at too fast of a pace if the frame-rate is really high. I think this applies to most games running on Unreal Engine 1.

I force vsync at the driver level, so the frame-rate was capped at 60fps as a result. Everything moved along at a proper pace on a machine with a quad-core CPU.

I just ran Deus Ex, Unreal and Unreal Tournament with vsync forced off, and all three games moved at a laughably fast pace. So, definitely enable vsync for games that run on this engine (vsync should always be enabled, but that's just my opinion).

Valve is being brought into the mix of finding those responsible for unlawfully obtaining and uploading a preview build of the game.

The more I see it, the more this game looks heavily influenced by Shirow Masamune's Ghost in the Shell.

I really hope the game is good.

Your above post got me to order a cheap 4-play collection that includes "Deus Ex Game of the Year" and "Thief II" at $13

Haven't played any of the 4 games included, and don't hold your breath on any response from me (in this thread) on doing this anytime soon.

FWIW the original Deus Ex is/was one of the GREAT PC games. (combo RPG/Action)

AFAICT "Deus Ex Game of the Year" is the original from 10+ years ago with maybe some minor embellishments?

Can't wait. Although, I don't think we should expect to take down bosses by tossing a series of lockpicks and multi-tools at them like we could in the original.

Reviews are out and they are all positive. Interestingly enough only PC review copies went out, no console reviews because the PC is (finally) the lead platform.

Probably our usual strategy.

Drop Roland's turret, equip one of your favorite weapons on hand and let er' rip! Don't forget to spam grenades as I will replenish those with the turret anyway.

Damnit! Now I want to play Borderlands.
