I just bought, I would say a midrange machine. The last few years I have mostly been playing games on the dark side (Xbox 360, Playstation). What would be some must have games to play on PC? I like just about any genre of game as long as it keeps my interest. My specs are:

Saturday was Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 I believe.
Yesterday was pretty much all Tom Clancy games (Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Hawx, and Splinter Cell titles). Only think I got was Splinter Cell Conviction though.
Start with half life 2 through till ep2... you'll be begging for hl3 by the time you finish. This is the kind of dedication that should go into every game. Gabe is a brilliant guy, everything they release is a hit.
WoW is good but it gets old after you've played through with one or two classes so take your time.
Fallout 3 / new vegas are amazing if you want that old school rpg feel with modern game graphics.
Bad company 2 is a great fps game, even more so if you have a capable audio system to compliment it.
Supcom FA / 2 and starcraft are great RTS games if that's your bag.
Red faction guerrilla isn't an amazing game, but it is good silly fun... definitely worth snagging while on sale. Their latest game just came out and should be a great improvement over guerrilla if you enjoyed it in the slightest.
Since the thread was bumped, let me add my two cents:
TEAM FORTRESS 2!!!
Not only is it the best PC game available (IMHO), but as of this past week the game is now free to play. It is supported by optional cosmetic gear purchases, so there is no excuse to not get it unless you despise intense, online FPS action and colorful goofy graphics.
I'll second TF2. I've been playing it with my brother for the past couple days. Finally got a mic hooked up (almost a requirement for this game in my opinion). It's a lot of fun and I'm looking to get some people to play with in a group.
Man, just look at all the sales going on right now. So many games at such tempting prices, if you keep track of the prices at GamersGate, Steam and D2Drive. GamersGate, especially recently, has really been having a lot of deals. Mass Effect 2 for 5 bucks. Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY for 6 bucks. NBA 2K11 for 8 bucks. Somebody had Borderlands for like 5 bucks. Bulletstorm was down to 12 bucks at one point. Steam might have a huge sale starting Friday.
Realistically, Most people probably should have a rule that they won't buy any PC games over $10, until they beat 3 games on their backlog list. Reason being, most of us have a pretty huge "pile of shame". Right now, my rule is 5 bucks, and it's amazing how many games are coming in at that $5 price or below. I recently did buy Arkham Asylum for $6, but I figure, one more buck for such a great game, why not? I figured that the lowest it's going to go is 5 bucks, so why not just grab it now. Only thing is, I'm currently trying to work my way thru Bioshock 1 and I've bought 5 or 6 games recently and haven't touched any of them. My backlog list is starting to get pretty hairy
Holy Crap that is cheap. With all the money that I would save by buying my games on a PC vs a console kinda negates the cheaper price of console hardware rather quickly.

Well, that's kinda pushing it, but I guess if you were the type to buy several full priced ($59.99 plus tax) games a month, then maybe after like 3 years it would work out. But it's extremely likely that next year your going to want to upgrade some part of your pc (or multiple parts), and it will quickly go to the other side.
Although I'm getting quite a few games for $5 and $6, with no tax, and free shipping if it's a physical disk.... The thing is, most of those games I'd be buying used for the 360 or PS3 on Craigslist. So, it's not like I would have bought Batman Arkham Asylum for $60 on console. I might have paid $18 for it used on Craigslist, and I ended up getting a digital version for $6. Yeah, I saved SOME money, but remember.... if I got the console version of Arkham Asylum, I'd be able to sell it again once I was done.
If I bought it used for $18 on Craigslist, I would have played thru it, and then probably sold it for like $8 bucks a year later. Making the true cost a 10 spot compared to the $6 digital version. Not a huge difference. It's only something to really get hyped about if you really were the type to buy tons of high priced games all the time.
I haven't been that guy since 2006. I've been the CAG (Cheap Ass Gamer) type.
If you only buy the sick deals on Steam, by the end of the year you will have a large collection for next to nothing. Pretty much everything goes deep discount if you're patient enough.

My life story. I think I have like 50+ games on Steam that I've never even downloaded when I bought a bunch of Studio superpacks.
More games than you could ever possibly play for less money than you might spend at a restaurant/bar in one night.
