This game was always destined for greatness given how good Arkham Asylum is, but the recently released gameplay video really makes me want to play it.

I wondewr, are they showing the footage from a console version? The game definitely had some framerate issues that I doubt was related to the video. The textures also looked a bit muddy. If so I can imagine how clean the PC version is going to be once you get some good AA going along with hopefully a better framerate. Color me impressed so far, I always felt the corridor nature of the first game didn't do it justice. Good to see they're going more open world.

I hope it can run as smoothly as Arkham Asylum, but I have my doubts. There's a big difference between a truly open Arkham (er Gotham?) city and the sequestered environments of AA. It will be interesting to see how they handle large structure loading, distance blur/depth of field, etc.

I assumed console since just about everything is shown on a console these days. There are some frame-rate issues and a bit of hitching due to texture pop-in, but it is probably something a decent PC can take care of.

Yeah you're probably right. I can't wait to see how good it can look on the PC.

Like its predecessor, the PC version of Arkham City will utilize hardware-based PhysX processing.

More interestingly, it will add some DirectX 11 graphical features.

The console versions are receiving excellent reviews, and the game is regarded as even better than Arkham Asylum.

It is just a month's wait for the definitive version to arrive.

Yeah. But I have little faith it will be released "on time" (even on it's already pushed-back date). Besides, I'll probably be preoccupied with Skyrim anyways.

Unfortunately, there's also a ton of other games that'll be out next month, and only a few that I'm playing right now. I'm leaning towards picking up the 360 version, to be honest, since otherwise I'm not sure I'll have enough time for it.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd love to have the PC version, and I'll probably still pick it up on PC if it ends up on Steam ever (especially if it's on sale).

Batman: PhysX interview

I wonder how my Tri-Crossfire 6950 setup will do with CPU PhysX FX jacked up? I'm almost able to run Metro 2033 with CPU PhysX @ MAX but my 6950's fans run full-bore and I start heating the up the room fast.

too bad the game could not make it's previous release date of October 18th...the game is getting excellent reviews (console reviews) and I fear it will get lost among the big guns in November (Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3)

according to the official WB page the PC version is set to be released on November 8th

The advanced PhysX effects in Metro 2033 aren't too demanding, and run fine on high-end CPUs. This is mostly because the game is coded to efficiently render those effects on the CPU.

Arkham City, on the other hand, will likely overburden any current CPU with PhysX set to high and heavily throttle your frame-rate. It is all that flying paper and torn clothing.

Yeah I don't really get the push back on the release date when there are other games that are coming along that are legitimate contenders for my hard earned money. I mean I know they don't give a crap about us pc fans but come on, there was no reason to delay the pc version. I'll probably wait on it now and devote my time to Skyrim. I don't care to spend money on a game that I won't want to play because I'll be so involved in Elder Scrolls. Same for Saints Row The Third. I love the SR series but Skyrim will get all my (limited) playtime for now through the new year. Same for Arkham. Sucks for WB but eh, doubt they care anyway.

they've stated that the delay was to 'optimize' the PC version...higher detail textures and a "more richly realized world."

The delay is nothing if Rocksteady continues the good reputation for quality that they set with the PC version of Arkham Asylum.

I am sure Nvidia sought to it that the game's technical aspects will impress PC gamers and encourage more GPU sales.

It was delayed so soon before release I doubt that's the real reason. There's a track record with these companies delaying their pc releases right before release and "tweaking" them isn't a good excuse. Hey who knows though they might surprise us but I doubt it. I think we'll get exactly what we got with the first game: a better looking release but still a console port.

Like MSmith83 said, Rocksteady hit a homerun with Batman: AA on PC. I can't remember having a single PCish issue and it looked incredible. Probably the best use of PhysX I've seen yet. I'm actually considering putting one of my 8800GTSes back in and dedicating it to PhysX just for Batman: Arkham City. I know PC has been getting the short end of the stick quite a lot lately but Rocksteady came through last time. And an additional month isn't that long but it's time enough to actually accomplish some tweaking.

I believe the delayed PC release is pretty much industry standard at this point. The true reason is to discourage early piracy and torrenting, encouraging the impatient to buy the console versions. And everyone's official line is "to optimize the PC version". Ha. Ah well I'll gladly accept a delay when the other alternative is no PC release at all.

You hit the nail on the head. This is the exact reason why PC versions continue to fall 1-2 months behind the console versions. They know they can't prevent pirating of the PC versions so they delay it in hopes that anticipation will make you buy the console versions. It must be working though because this is a growing trend over the last year or so. I'm sure they have sales data to justify what they're doing.

I can't argue with what they're doing, but I'm still thankful they continue to release PC versions of these outstanding games. I'm always concerned that PC gaming is getting further behind every year, at least in the minds of the developers and publishers that see big sales on consoles.

Below is a 1080p screen grab from the PC version with tessellation enabled. The spoiler tag was used to keep it from taking up too much room.

On my 2600k@4.8GHz I'll probably be running very low-level CPU based PhysX (if at all). Depends on how CPU intensive it is.

My current setup is the following:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Corsair High Perform Vengeance 16GB (4 × 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz
XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1GB DDR5 PCIe
Asus P7H55-M PRO
Aerocool PGS Qx-2000

Will I be able to run CPU based PhysX reasonably well while playing Batman: Arkham City?

Could you also run CPU based PhysX on Batman: Arkham Asylum or was that one exclusively GPU based?

We'll know for sure when the game comes out. However, looking at the recent PhysX video for it, I doubt any CPU will handle high settings well enough. Particle and fog effects look as if they will be even more significant in this game than in Arkham Asylum.

If I remember correctly, it does allow full PhysX effects rendered via the CPU. But, it is unoptimized (i.e., not properly multi-threaded) to the point where no current CPU could handle normal and high settings at a consistently decent frame rate.

I'm sure many people here know, but there's been an NVIDIA promotion going on where you get a free coupon code for this game with select GPUs bought from specific outlets. The code is also redeemable through Steam.

The MSI N560GTX-M2D1GD5 and this game for $170 from NewEgg after rebate is a great value for anyone looking to cheaply upgrade a dated GPU.

There is yet another way to get this game for "free" along with the purchase of a piece of hardware.

There is a code for a free download of the game with the purchase of a Samsung 830 Series SSD in every capacity but 64GB. These drives are apparently great performers and reasonably priced as far as SSDs go.

Anyone play this yet? Can't wait to get off work and fire this up

Love sports, movies, and games. Slowly some day I'll add a projector and screen. Until then, I'll build up my library.
